Up to Nine Russian Contractors Die in Syria, Experts Say

user posted image

QUOTE
Unlike Blackwater, though, the Russian Defense Ministry hasn't publicly acknowledged their existence. It isn’t clear whether the men’s role went beyond protecting government installations to direct involvement in fighting.
QUOTE
The Russians killed in Syria belonged to a private group called OSM, according to Denis Korotkov, a former security adviser and journalist. The group is known informally as Wagner, after the nom de guerre of its leader, a former military intelligence officer who has served in several conflicts since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.
QUOTE
An official close to the Russian Defense Ministry said that the group had numbered around 1,000. Unlike Western security contractors, who are typically armed with only light weapons, members of the group were operating T-90 tanks and howitzers.
QUOTE
The leader of OSM was a member of a previous group of Russian contractors in Syria, the three people said. That group—Slavonic Corps—was ultimately disbanded, but many of those who fought in Slavonic Corps returned to Syria with Wagner, according to Mr. Konovalov and the official close to the Defense Ministry.
QUOTE
“It’s a question of honor; Russians hate the concept of a mercenary because if you pick up a weapon you do it to defend the motherland,” he said. “The idea of doing it for money lies counter to everything we’re taught.”

Oldies but Goodies: Upgraded 'Invulnerable' Т-72 Tanks Join Russian Army

user posted image

QUOTE
The souped-up version of the Soviet-designed main battle tank that entered production in 1971 is virtually invulnerable now, boasting ballistic add-on armor protection against RPGs and weapons of mass destruction, as well as an automatic fire detection and explosion suppression system.

Thermal gunner night sights are available, which allow night launches of ATGMs.

The list of upgrades also includes a more powerful engine, better overall protection, a better gun and a modern multichannel ginner sight — all bringing the veteran fighting machine up to par with modern-day armored combat requirements.
QUOTE
The T-72 is armed with a 125 mmm smoothbore cannon with guided missile firing capability.

The cannon comes in tandem with a 7.62 mm Kalashnikov  machinegun  and a turret-mounted heavy antiaircraft machinegun.

The 41-ton T-72 is powered by a multi-fuel V-12 air-cooled 840 hp engine that can run on three types of fuel: diesel, gasoline and kerosene.

Two 200-liter auxiliary fuel drums can be fitted on the rear of the hull. The T-72 can be fitted with a snorkel for deep fording, and takes about 20 minutes to prepare for amphibious use.

We're going to need a bigger harbour! £100m bill to make Portsmouth deep enough for Navy's giant new warships

user posted image

QUOTE
More than £100 million is being spent on upgrading Portsmouth naval base because the harbour is too shallow to accommodate the two biggest warships ever built for the Royal Navy.
The complex and expensive operation is needed to deepen the harbour by 5ft so that the giant aircraft carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales will be able to berth there.
Over the next seven months, about three million cubic metres of clay, sand and gravel will be excavated from the approach channel, the harbour itself and the berth – covering an area roughly equivalent to 200 football pitches.
QUOTE
experts say the two new aircraft carriers, built in sections around the country and assembled at Rosyth on the Firth of Forth, will form the centrepiece of Britain’s naval capability.
The vessels are 920ft long – equivalent to 28 London buses parked end to end – and are three times bigger than previous carriers.
Taller than Nelson’s Column and displacing 65,000 tons, the carriers will provide the Armed Forces with a massive operating base that can be deployed worldwide. Prime Minister David Cameron has called them ‘an investment in British security, British prosperity and our place in the world’.
HMS Queen Elizabeth is due to arrive in early 2017, while her sister ship HMS Prince of Wales is expected to be commissioned in 2020.
However, design and construction delays have sent the bill for the warships rocketing from a 2007 estimate of £3.6 billion to today’s figure of £6.2 billion.

Saudi says 3 civilians killed by Yemen missile as peace talks enter last day

user posted image

QUOTE
A missile fired from war-torn Yemen has struck a Saudi border city, killing three civilians, the kingdom said, in yet another violation of a ceasefire aimed at helping peace talks.

Saturday's attack on Najran left one Saudi citizen and two Indian workers dead, according to a civil defence spokesman quoted by the official SPA news agency.

It comes after the Saudi-led coalition fighting Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen announced that two ballistic missiles were fired Friday at the kingdom from its neighbour.

One of the missiles was intercepted by Saudi air defences, while the other struck a desert area east of Najran, the coalition said without reporting any casualties in that incident.

US says B-52 bombers didn't intend to fly over China's man-made island

A senior U.S. defense official told The Wall Street Journal that bad weather may have contributed to the pilot flying off course and into the area where China claims.

The statement said that Chinese military personnel on the island went on high alert during the overflights by the B-52 strategic bombers and that they issued warnings demanding the aircraft leave the area.

This Picture Of A Bombed-Up And Dirty F-35C Is The Best Joint-Strike Fighter Photo Yet

user posted image

Gear down, flaps out, all bombed, missiled and gunned-up, in a steep bank and in burner—this has to be the best photo of an F-35 yet. Additionally, the navalized F-35C, shown here, with its larger wing, has to be the most photogenic out of the Joint Strike Fighter family. When you add in pair of AIM-9Xs, a quartet of GBU-12s, a center-line 25m gun pod and some nice light, it just screams “futuristic war wagon” from this angle.

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA, DEC. 18, 2015

Syrian Arab Army and Hezbollah conduct an encirclement operation on the north of Latakia Governorate against Turkestan Islamic Party and al-Nusra Front forces. Encircling of the enemy forces is executed simultaneously with the raining down destruction of the encircled groups by Syrian and Russian aviation.

On Thursday evening the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) supported by the National Defense Forces (NDF) captured Jabal Al-Sayyid. This already forced the militants to withdraw towards the northern mountainside of Jabal Al-Turkmen. This morning clashes were observed in Jabal Al-Turkmen, Jabal Al-Akrad and Jabal Al-Zahiyah where the pro-government forces are continuing offensive actions.

SouthFront: Analysis&Intelligence supposes that the task of the final operational encirclement on the north of Latakia Governorate will be accomplished by Syrian governmental forces within 6-7 days.

The SAA and its allies advanced on the terrorists’ positions in the city of Aleppo on Thursday. The loyalists’ forces destroyed terrorists in the neighborhoods of al-Lairamoun, al-Firdous and Bani Zaid. Also clashes were observed in the districts of al-Maasaraniyeh, al-Sheikh Lutfi and Bustan al-Basha.

Separately, the SAA has destroyed the ISIS strongholds and fortifications in the villages of Najjara and al-Jaberiyeh in the Eastern part of Aleppo province. 10 militants were killed in the attacks. Militants’ weapons and machine gun-equipped vehicles were also destroyed.

Twelve US F-15 fighter jets deployed temporarily in Turkey’s Incirlik air base last month returned to their Lakenheath airbase in the UK on Wednesday. The US European Command (EUCOM) said that the temporary deployment strengthened interoperability of the US and Turkish air forces in defending Turkish airspace and conducting alleged operations against ISIS. The EUCOM stated that the end of F-15 deployments does not indicate a reduction in operations against ISIS. However, it is a remarkable move amid the cooling of the US-Turkish relations.

Turkish soldiers watch as the Syrian Army captures 5 points along the border with northern Latakia

user posted image

The Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade of the Republican Guard has effectively spread the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) too thin after launching their massive offensive at three different axes in the Latakia Governorate’s northern countryside.

On Friday and Saturday, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade of the Republican Guard – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Latakia City, the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), and Muqawama Souri (Syrian Resistance) – imposed full control over 5 points along the vast Turkish-Latakia border after a long battle with Jabhat Al-Nusra and the Free Syrian Army.

According to a battlefield journalist with the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade, the Syrian Armed Forces captured Points 427, 626.8, 687.5, 526, and 652 in the Turkmen Mountains (Jabal Al-Turkmen) of northern Latakia, further expanding the pro-government forces’ control over the Turkish border with this coastal province.

Currently, intense firefights between the Syrian Armed Forces and Jabhat Al-Nusra are ongoing at the Al-Nuba Mountains inside the southern rim of the Turkmen Mountain chain.

Jabhat Al-Nusra has used the poor weather in the Latakia Governorate to their advantage, as they have launched several attacks on the Syrian Arab Army’s defensive positions, while both the Russian and Syrian Air Forces were forced to standby due to the volatile conditions.

Fast and Accurate: Best-Kept Secrets of Russia’s 'Sniper' Howitzer

user posted image

QUOTE
Even though information about the Koalitsiya’s exact rate of fire remains under wraps, Russian experts say that it is higher than that of any of its foreign analogues.

This includes Germany’s PsH 2000, which fires 10 rounds a minute, China’s PLZ-05 with its eight rounds per minute capability and, of course, Britain’s Brave Hart, which can fire maximum six times per minute, Zvezda TV reported on Sunday.
QUOTE
The Koalitsiya owes its record rate of fire largely to a unique barrel-cooling system developed by the Burevestnic research institute in Moscow.

Even though the Koalitsiya-SV resembles the older 2S19 Msta-S, it is a totally different system. It has an unmanned turret and is armed with a 152-mm gun. It also has a fully automated ammunition loading and handling system utilizing a modular charge mechanism.

QUOTE
This artillery system can fire a wide range of munitions, including standard and rocket-assisted HE-FRAG projectiles, cluster projectiles with anti-tank submunitions and jammer-carrying shells.

T-90 tanks help propel Hezbollah and the Syrian Army in Southern Aleppo

user posted image

Over the last 2 months in the Aleppo Governorate’s southern countryside, the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Mechanized Division and Hezbollah have attempted to capture the strategic town of Khan Touman from the Islamist rebels of Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham and Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group).

On Sunday morning; this long battle for Khan Touman finally came to an end after the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Mechanized Division – in coordination with Hezbollah, Harakat Al-Nujaba (Iraqi paramilitary), and the National Defense Forces (NDF) – imposed full control over the town and its surrounding farms.

Prior to capturing the town of Khan Touman, the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies seized the imperative village of Al-Qarassi following a series of intense firefights with the Islamist rebels of Faylaq Al-Sham, Jabhat Al-Nusra, Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, and Harakat Nouriddeen Al-Zinki.

The capture of this aforementioned village paved the way for the pro-government forces to strike Khan Touman’s eastern perimeter and ultimately impose full control over it two hours later.

In addition to the capture of Al-Qarassi and Khan Touman, the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies seized the small hilltop village of Tal Al-‘Amarrah, which is located directly west of Khan Touman.

The Syrian Arab Army’s use of the Russian manufactured T-90 tank played an integral role during this battle, as its protective armor and durability made it difficult for the enemy combatants to halt their advance.

LOST KURDISTAN

QUOTE
War in Syria has for the second time in the last 10 years breathed life into the Kurdish national movement in the countries of the Middle East (the first time it occurred was after the American invasion of Iraq in 2003). Inhabitants of Western Kurdistan (Syria) are mostly resisting Islamic fighters supported by Turkey, and the “southerners” (Iraq) are cooperating with these militants. The clans of the Iranian Kurds, who are continuing their long-term game under the name “negotiations with Tehran” are meanwhile in a holding position.

user posted image

QUOTE
The denial to Damascus of centralized control over territories of the Syrian Kurds has become an inspiring example for their fellow tribesmen in Turkey. It reached such an extent that Ankara announced negotiations with their “historical enemy”, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (in the person of its leader Abdullah Ocalan, leaving his life term in Turkish prison). At the same time the Turkish government has decisively quarreled with Baghdad which is extremely dissatisfied with the fact that Turks are buying oil from the Iraqi Kurds in an “unsanctioned” manner.
QUOTE
According to some information, 60% of black gold extracted in Iraq belong to Iraqi Kurdistan, as well as adjacent Kurdish areas which are nominally under direct jurisdiction of Baghdad, but actually under control of the authorities in the Kurdish “capital” of Erbil. According to Article140 of the Iraq constitution, the future of conflict regions will be defined after conducting local referenda. But due to administrative confusion and political instability in the country which has lasted past the period of American occupation, this will hardly occur very soon.
QUOTE
“Between the Syrian Kurds and Assad, there are certain private arrangements. In exchange for loyalty, the President permitted them to control “their own” areas. In the Middle East this has long been an open secret, says Dr. Koteysh from Lebanese State University. — And it is totally appropriate that Kurds from Syria and Turkey are cooperating between themselves.
QUOTE
An ancient Kurdish proverb says: “Pain in all the fingers is identical, even though they are all different”.

On Sale Now — A Civilian Squad Machine Gun

user posted image

QUOTE
For almost 30 years the M-249 Squad Automatic Weapon has been the go-to light machine gun for U.S. Army infantry squads — and Marine Corps squads, too, until recently.

And now you can walk into your local gun shop and purchase a semi-automatic M-249S SAW, a replica of the fully-automatic M-249.
QUOTE
The semi-automatic M-249S is made of the same components and to the same specs as the fully-auto M-249 but features a closed rather than open bolt and has a much lighter trigger pull of no more than 6.5 pounds, compared to the auto’s 15.7 pounds. It accepts the same belt or magazine ammunition.
QUOTE
“The M249S might not be fully automatic … but it comes with a slew of goodies that should get military-firearms enthusiasts’ hearts pumping,” Elwood Shelton wrote in GunDigest.com. Nick Leghorn at TheTruthAboutGuns.com reported that the M-249S was the most popular gun at the NRA Annual Meeting when it was previewed there in April. “[T]he talk of the show is the semi-auto M-249.”

But it ain’t cheap. The M-249S sells for $7,999.

Who Is Militarizing the South China Sea?

user posted image

QUOTE
China’s Deputy Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin said at the East Asia Summit “One should never link the military facilities with efforts to militarize the South China Sea. This is a false argument. It is a consistent Chinese position to firmly oppose the militarization of the South China Sea.”
QUOTE
What about the bigger picture regarding the meaning of the term “militarization”? The U.S. – unlike China – already has military “places” if not bases in Southeast Asia, in its military allies the Philippines and Thailand, and more recently in Malaysia and Singapore for its Poseidon sub-hunters and electronic warfare platforms.
QUOTE
It does not deny that its military will utilize the facilities on the features it has built up and upon. Indeed, Liu has said that “as those islands and reefs are far from China’s mainland, it is necessary to build and maintain military facilities.” But no other claimant and occupier has denied that their military uses their features.
QUOTE
Perhaps the U.S. is only “crying wolf” to scare the Southeast Asian countries into its political and military embrace. If so, this is a dangerous tactic that could backfire and become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
QUOTE
What is clear is that “militarization” means different things to different nations. Countries that accuse others of it should define specifically what they mean.

Syrian Democratic Forces begin a major offensive to capture the Tishreen Dam in Al-Raqqa

user posted image

The U.S. backed “Syrian Democratic Forces” (SDF) – alongside the People’s Protection Units (YPG) – have launched a fresh offensive in the Al-Raqqa Governorate’s western countryside to capture the Tishreen Dam that separates the aforementioned province and the Aleppo Governorate.

The primary objective for the Syrian Democratic Forces and the People’s Protection Units might be to capture the Tishreen Dam; however, the short-term objective is to seize the town of Sarrin in the Al-Raqqa Governorate’s northwestern countryside.

Assisting the YPG and SDF from the air will be the Russian and U.S. Air Forces that are searching for any convoys or military movements from the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) near the village of Sarrin, the Tishreen Dam, and the ISIS stronghold of Menbeij.

If the Syrian Democratic Forces capture Sarrin and the Tishreen Dam, they will be in positions to strike the ISIS stronghold of Menbeij in eastern Aleppo, marking the first time in nearly two years that this city has come under attack from any military force.

Currently, ISIS is feeling the heat on several fronts, including the eastern Aleppo countryside, where the Syrian Arab Army’s “Tiger Forces” are currently pushing their way to the other ISIS stronghold of Deir Hafer.

QUOTE
The first is a location close to the Khuld Hall, where the so-called Suqor, or “Hawks,” cell operates. Here, Iraqi spies exchange intelligence with their Russian counterparts, especially any information relating to the senior leaders and commanders of ISIS.
QUOTE
The second venue is the National Information Center, run by Lieutenant General Hussein Alasady. The Russians, sources tell The Daily Beast, keep their own major general there as a representative and liaison. Finally, Moscow has a presence within the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers building, which is the nerve center of all of Iraq’s national security operations.

Needless to add, all of these organs are thoroughly penetrated by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, which is responsible for arming and training the Hashd al-Shaabi and, to a lesser or greater degree, running Iraq’s war.

First Step to Annexation? The Real Reason Turkey Sent Troops to Iraq

QUOTE
"President Erdogan and his entourage believe that Nineveh province was illegally annexed from Turkey in 1920. … Taking advantage of the attenuation of the central Iraqi authority and de facto division of the country into three parts (Shiite south, Sunni center and Kurdish north), Mr. Erdogan cherishes the idea of restoring 'historical justice,'" the analyst explained.

QUOTE
These factors "explain Ankara's desire to take advantage of the power vacuum in the north of Iraq and take control over these territories after the liberation of Mosul and Nineveh," Ivanov stated. "And it will not necessarily look like a direct occupation of Nineveh and its subsequent annexation from Iraq."

"The US administration is very much pleased that Turkey and Kurds have close ties," the analyst noted. "The reason the US supports this partnership is because as long as Turkey and Kurds have an affinity, the influence of Iran and of the pro-Iranian lobby in Baghdad will be kept at bay."
