Fearing escalation, NATO reins in Turkey

user posted image

QUOTE
NATO plans to send air defence support to Turkey partly to minimise the risk of Ankara shooting down another Russian warplane, while assuaging its fears of a spillover from the conflict in Syria, senior alliance sources say.
QUOTE
"NATO rules of engagement are more cautious than those of Turkey," said one NATO source.
QUOTE
"It's a face-saving show of allied support for Turkey, while trying to get them to behave more intelligently," said Nick Witney, a former head of the European Defence Agency now at the European Council on Foreign Relations.
QUOTE
By sending some of NATO's fleet of mushroom-topped AWACS surveillance planes to patrol the airspace along Turkey's border with Syria, chiefly to coordinate several allied air forces operating out of Incirlik Air Base, NATO will help manage Turkish airspace
QUOTE
NATO will increasingly take over management of Turkish airspace, so the Turks will have to be mindful of the fact that we will have eyes in the sky that can give a second opinion on any situation," the NATO source said.

ISIS Is Reportedly Packing Drones With Explosives Now

user posted image

QUOTE
An unconfirmed report from Syria suggests that ISIS has started using small drones packed with explosives as weapons. The first attack was a failure, but if the report is accurate, then it signals a dangerous new terror threat.

The report showed pictures of the remains of a homemade attack drone. It was apparently shot down, along with a second drone that exploded, by Kurdish YPF ("People's Defence Units") fighters in Syria. The caption says that both drones carried explosives, and that no YPF fighters were injured in the incident.

The evolution of US Army uniforms over the last 240 years

In the over 200 years since the US declared independence for the English in 1776, the uniforms of those serving in the US Army have changed drastically.

Over the years, as the nation grew, uniforms too have evolved to fit the times and take advantage of changes in tactics and technology. In some cases, as this paper from US Army History notes, the changes were minor affairs while, in other cases, the look of the US Army was radically changed.

We have highlighted some of the major advancements in US Army uniforms in the graphic below.

Syrian Army advances at 3 different fronts in northern Latakia

user posted image

It is hard to determine what has been the Syrian Arab Army’s most successful offensive since the genesis of Russian airstrikes inside the country; however, one could argue that the significant progress in southern Aleppo has given hope to the people of Aleppo City.

Then again, one might argue that the southern Aleppo offensive is mixed with Iraqi paramilitary units and Hezbollah, but the eastern Aleppo front is different, they are purely SAA and this same group lifted the 3 year long siege of the Kuweires Military Airport.

Regardless of preference, the most imperative offensive taking place in Syria is the northern Latakia offensive that is being conducted by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies from the National Defense Forces (NDF) and the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP).

Why is this the most important offensive?

It is rather simple: the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade of the Republican Guard and their allies are advancing along 3 different fronts in northern Latakia and they are doing so in a very rapid, but efficient manner.

In a matter of 2 and a half months, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade and their allies have seized several kilometers of territory inside Jabal Al-Turkmen (Turkmen Mountains) and Jabal Al-Akrad (Kurdish Mountains), while the Turkish-backed Islamist rebels retreat along several axes.

Yesterday, the Syrian Armed Forces imposed full control over Jabal Al-Nuba (Nuba Mountains); this strategic site was almost untouchable just three months ago and now, it is under the control of the Syrian state government.

In addition to their advance towards the Turkish border, the Syrian Armed Forces are pushing east along the Latakia-Turkish border after capturing Jabal Al-Zahiyah and large parts of the Firlalaq Forests in Jabal Al-Turkmen.

And lastly, the Latakia Governorate is the key to the Syrian government’s maritime shipping industry and the gateway to both the Idlib and Aleppo Governorate’s.

Without sealing Latakia, the strategic city of Jisr Al-Shughour in Idlib would be impregnable and a lost cause for the Syrian Armed Forces; but with the Latakia Governorate sealed off, they will be in prime position to launch an attack.

Brit forces to support Saudi super army to destroy ISIS

QUOTE
The alliance would help the 70,000 "moderate" fighters backed by David Cameron take on the terrorists in Syria.

The notorious group – responsible for the Paris terror attacks – declared a caliphate last year.

ISIS were also responsible for downing a Russian jet over Egypt in October – killing everyone on board.

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA, DEC. 17, 2015

During the last days, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has been clashed with the Islamist Jaysh Al-Islam militants for control of the Marj Al-Sultan Military Airport in the East Ghouta region in the Damascus province. On Sunday, the Syrian forces captured the strategic Helicopter Airfields and Helicopter Airbase that is situated at the southern part of Marj Al-Sultan. On Monday, the SAA and the National Defense Forces (NDF) took control of the village of Marj Al-Sultan where the militants’ command and control center was located. On Tuesday, the pro-government troops captured the main Helicopter Military Base and the P-35 Radar Base that is situated to the north of Marj Al-Sultan and liberated the whole area of the airport.

SouthFront: Analysis & Intelligence remembers on December 15, the Syrian Arab Air Force helicopter landed at the Kuweires Military Airport for the first time in nearly three years. More flights should be conducted to the Airport in the nearest future.

The recent developments have shown that the Assad government is continuing to take control of the crucial infrastructure and logistical centers pushing terrorists to the country’s desert regions. For the last four days, the SAA, Hezbollah and the Iraqi paramilitary group “Harakat Al-Nujaba” have been on the defensive against a joint advance of the Al-Nusra, Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, and Harakat Nouriddeen Al-Zinki terrorist groups’ avance in in South Aleppo.

This changed on Wednesday when Hezbollah and Harakat Al-Nujaba launched a counter-offensive from their positions at Burnah, Al-Zeitan, and Al-Qal’ajiyah to target the towns of Al-Zorba, Khan Touman, and Al-Baraoum which are located along the Aleppo-Damascus Highway. The Hezbollah and Harakat Al-Nujaba advanced in the southern axis of Khan Touman, while the SAA and the NDF advanced on the towns of Al-Zorba and Al-Barqoum. The main aim of the offensive is to cut-off the terrorists’ supply route along the Aleppo-Damascus Highway. Preliminary reports confirm a large number of dead on both sides. The clashes are continuing.

US Air Force will have laser weapons on planes by 2020: Claims Star Wars technology is at a 'tipping point' - and there are even plans for a force field protection bubble

user posted image

QUOTE
It will be a new era for top guns: Air Force bosses have boasted combat lasers will be fitted to fighters planes by 2020.

The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, or AFRL, is on track to demonstrate a working laser weapon on a fighter jet by 2020, it has revealed.

'It really is a national tipping point,' Kelly Hammett, chief engineer for the AFRL's directed energy directorate, told CNN.

The Companies That Make the Most From the World’s Wars

user posted image

QUOTE
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has published its list of the world’s top 100 arms manufacturers. Overall, the 100 largest defense contractors totaled $401 billion in sales 2014, though the actual number is probably even higher, because the list excludes Chinese companies “due to the lack of data.”

This is a healthy chunk of the total worldwide military expenditure during the same year, which was $1.776 trillion including China.

In other words — of every dollar that governments around the world spent on their militaries in 2014, about 23 cents ended up in the pockets of one of the 100 companies on SIPRI’s list, many of which are privately owned.
QUOTE
SIPRI predicts Lockheed Martin’s revenue from defense goods and services to exceed $40 billion in 2015, owing to the acquisition of Sikorsky Aircraft, which manufactures the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter among other products, and would be ranked 24th on the list by itself.

Overall, American companies take 54.4 percent of the total revenue of all 100 companies on the list. Seven of the top 10 arms manufacturers — and 38 of the top 100 — are based in the United States.

ANALYSIS: How can radicalisation in Molenbeek be stopped?

user posted image

QUOTE
BRUSSELS – Of the Belgian nationals fighting in Syria, more than a hundred are listed as residents of Brussels, with nearly a third coming from the Molenbeek district alone. Two of the perpetrators of the 13 November Paris attacks lived in the district.

International media has not hesitated to declare this Belgian province the European capital of radicalism, a no-go zone, and the hub of “jihadism”.
QUOTE
However, political scientist el-Ghabri recalls that "most young people who left to fight in Syria between 2012 and 2013 belonged to Sharia4Belgium, a Belgian hardline organisation dissolved on 7 October 2012. This organisation, however, had no access to mosques. On the contrary, it was even “forced out of mosques". El-Ghabri even doubts that "there are jihadist mosques, in which there would be someone calling for an armed and offensive jihad".
QUOTE
"It is very unlikely that the recruitment or incitement to go [to Syria] takes place in the mosques, because these are monitored places," explained the researcher. He instead advocated "the adoption of security policies that truly address the problem and respond to the emergency situation," and stressed the need to "think of intelligent answers, proportionate and respectful of freedoms".

Secretary Of Defense Carter Smacks Down The Littoral Combat Ship Program

user posted image

user posted image

QUOTE
Carter has specifically directed Maybus to cut the number of hulls for the LCS program from 52 to 40, and to select a single LCS design-shipbuilder team, instead of the current plan for two completely separate designs and shipbuilders, according to the letter originally obtained by USNI.

Two LCS variants are in production, with six ships operational (three of each type), and 20 more on the order books. The two suppliers include Lockheed/Marinette Marine for the Freedom Class that features a traditional mono-hull design, and General Dynamics/Austral for the Independence Class that features an exotic trimaran design.
QUOTE
The savings gained by Carter’s LCS cuts will also find their way into America’s in-demand nuclear submarine fleet by upping the funding for the Virginia Payload Module development. Once deployed operationally on future Virginia-class fast attack nuclear submarines, the upgrade will allow America’s converted Ohio-class guided missile submarines to be slowly retired, simultaneously opening up funding for the Ohio-class’s replacement.
QUOTE
The ship’s automated mine hunting system, a key component that was supposed give the LCS a valuable capability for one of its rudimentary missions, remains a total bust. What’s worse is that the decision to “up-gun” the design with more combat punch and armor, instead of procuring a more traditional frigate, resulted in adapting a design for something it was never meant to do.

"Enhanced Human Operations" Terrify the Pentagon

user posted image

QUOTE
Now our adversaries, quite frankly, are pursuing enhanced human operations, and it scares the crap out of us," Work said.

Altering human beings from the inside to more effectively fight in combat presents ethical dilemmas for American scientists and military planners. Work says those ethical concerns typically don't apply to authoritarian governments like Russia's or China's, but their lack of hesitation in developing EHOs may force America's hand.

"We're going to have to have a big, big decision on whether we're comfortable going that way," Work admits.

What sort of enhancement are we talking about? As yet, the Pentagon has not been specific, but we can infer several likely human mods from previous work done by DARPA, and our own imagination.

"Now our adversaries, quite frankly, are pursuing enhanced human operations, and it scares the crap out of us."

'Wild ride for 6 seconds': Inside a Navy SEAL's world record flight

user posted image

QUOTE
Retired U.S. Navy SEAL Andy Stumpf risked his life to support the SEAL community and set a global record in a death-defying feat earlier this year.

Armed only with a wingsuit and a whole lot of courage, Stumpf jumped from an altitude of more than 36,500 feet, exiting a plane travelling more than 230 mph. He used a wingsuit made by Squirrel reach speeds above 140 mph.

The prior world record was 17.83 miles absolute distance traveled in a wingsuit – this “Man on a Mission” travelled 18.257 miles.

Will The Saudis Let Us Beat ISIS?

user posted image

QUOTE
On Dec. 15, Saudi Arabia announced a new “Islamic military alliance” of 34 countries to “coordinate and support military operations to fight terrorism.”
QUOTE
Unfortunately, both of these initiatives fell apart before they were even underway. Not only did the Saudis exclude the Kurds—the most effective ground force fighting ISIS
QUOTE
What of the Islamic military alliance? Just a day after its announcement, the Lebanese and Pakistani foreign ministers and the Malaysian defense minister denied their countries’ involvement in the Saudi-led coalition.
QUOTE
Embroiled in a proxy war with Russia and Iran—both of whom support Assad—Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey have supported and armed the more radical elements of the opposition.
QUOTE
The evident objective is simply to create enough instability that the country is no longer an asset to Tehran but is, rather, a liability.
QUOTE
Rather than a threat from Iran, Turkey is concerned over the potential creation of a Kurdish autonomous region in Syria—much like the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq to which Turkey has reluctantly grown accustomed.
QUOTE
However, Russia and Iran will never give up Assad in the face of unabated external support for Syria’s Salafist opposition groups.
QUOTE
If the United States wants to mediate effectively between the two sides, it must find a more balanced approach. If it can’t keep its allies—especially Saudi Arabia—in check, any efforts to end the war will be doomed from the start.

The Syrian military has thousands of deserters. New research tells us why they left.

user posted image

QUOTE
Most deserters we spoke with left their military service between late 2011 and early 2013, a finding that is compatible with other sources of evidence on Syrian military deserters.
QUOTE
They described the military as a professional force in which religion did not interfere in relationships with comrades and superiors. Almost all respondents reported collegial relations with members of all sects and reported regularly interacting with one another at military colleges, in the barracks  and socially.
QUOTE
As the uprising broke out, however, soldiers described how the inflammation of sectarian divides created an atmosphere of mistrust within the military. Sunni respondents felt constricted by the presence of Alawi soldiers and officers in their units, and feared communicating their perspectives on the uprisings with fellow soldiers in these mixed-sect units.
QUOTE
An estimated 100,000 Syrian soldiers and officers have left their positions since the beginning of the crisis in 2011.

THE INTERCEPT HAS OBTAINED secret, internal U.S. government catalogue of dozens of cellphone surveillance devices used by the military and by intelligence agencies. The document, thick with previously undisclosed information, also offers rare insight into the spying capabilities of federal law enforcement and local police inside the United States.

The catalogue includes details on the Stingray, a well-known brand of surveillance gear, as well as Boeing “dirt boxes” and dozens of more obscure devices that can be mounted on vehicles, drones, and piloted aircraft. Some are designed to be used at static locations, while others can be discreetly carried by an individual. They have names like Cyberhawk, Yellowstone, Blackfin, Maximus, Cyclone, and Spartacus. Within the catalogue, the NSA is listed as the vendor of one device, while another was developed for use by the CIA, and another was developed for a special forces requirement. Nearly a third of the entries focus on equipment that seems to have never been described in public before.

China conducts war games in South China Sea

user posted image

QUOTE
China claims almost all of the energy-rich waters of the South China Sea, through which more than US$5 trillion of maritime trade passes each year. The Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Malaysia and Taiwan have overlapping claims.

The US Pacific Fleet Commander on Monday warned of a possible arms race in the disputed South China Sea which could engulf the region, as nations become increasingly tempted to use military force to settle territorial spats.

In a front page story, the PLA Daily said the drill was carried out on Wednesday across “several thousand square kilometers” of waters somewhere in the South China Sea.

The forces were split into two teams, red and blue, as military commanders threw various scenarios at them, including an accidental missile strike on a commercial ship operated by a third party, the newspaper said.

The warships also simulated deflecting anti-ship missile attacks, and operating in concert with submarines, early warning aircraft and fighter jets, the report added.

New Russian Air Defenses in Syria Keep U.S. Grounded

user posted image

QUOTE
The U.S. has stopped flying manned air-support missions for rebels in a key part of northern Syria due to Russia’s expansion of air defense systems there, and the Barack Obama administration is scrambling to figure out what to do about it.
QUOTE
But earlier this month, Moscow deployed an SA-17 advanced air defense system near the area and began “painting” U.S. planes, targeting them with radar in what U.S. officials said was a direct and dangerous provocation.
QUOTE
With U.S. planes out of the way, Russia has stepped up its own airstrikes along the Turkey-Syria border, and the Obama administration has accused it of targeting the rebel groups the U.S. was supporting, not the Islamic State.
QUOTE
.S. Central Command and now a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.  “The Russians are trying to create zones where they would have to give permission for U.S. flights,” he said. “The Russians are increasingly defining the military landscape by their actions.”
QUOTE
The Russians are doing this to squeeze the Turks," said Ford. "It’s going to cause problems for the CIA program."
QUOTE
But the Syrian Arabs and the Turks don’t want Kurdish troops to control Box 4, said Ford, because then the Kurds would then have a proto-state reaching all the way from the Mediterranean Sea to the Iran-Iraq border.

Can the Government guarantee that the port will never be used to further China’s military interests?

I hereby await Liow’s reply.
