This is very nice! Must cost a bomb to mod. Interesting roller wheels.

I'm just after one to try and see what the fuss is about. I've bought sight unseen, so hope it will turn out OK. The lady had two to sell, husband's and hers. Been on tour in NZ. It's got the rack, bag, spare tyre and tubes. Good deal for a Birdy Blue.

I actually like the classic frame. Matches the ugly front! Haha

It is true, at least for me anyway. When I first saw it, it thought "urghh"! And it appears to fold into a pile of parts!

Over the years, the more I looked at it, the more interesting it's become. I have never seen one in the flesh nor have I ridden it, so I can't wait rolleyes.gif

I'll do a comparison with the other dual drive foldies in a few weeks time. Haha

That's probably true. Not sure if I will ever see the point of the Carryme.... I'd prefer walking anytime, lol

I don't see that as a bicycle.... biggrin.gif But that's only an opinion of course!

It is definitely faster than walking, that's for sure on a flat road that is! Also if you visualize it in your mind, turn the crank once and you will imagine the rear wheels turning a few rounds and the distance is not too bad actually. Only fail point for me is....................it's ugly ! bangwall.gif  I always wants things that has aesthetic value as well, not only just functionality. That's why, if you give me a Moulton, I will sell it half the price and get another bike.......hahahaaaa.  biggrin.gif
*
I was about to give you my Moulton as you are such a nice guy. Didn't expect to hear you don't want...... Ok, never mind lah!

Sifus, i had second puncture on my foldie. After changing to schwalbe big apple..i thought my bike will be more tire puncture resistant.
However, upon checking, found that the puncture is on the side where the tube faces the rim body...not from outer penetration.

Could it be a pinch flat..or my rim is not well taped.? Btw, i aam using a cheap tube called rockstone from china. Its a butyl tube. Even the packaging doesnt look premium.
How do i diagnose that my inner rim tape is not sufficient, or badly in stall.?

Another question...my stock tire size is 20 x 1.75 rotolo, and the ori tube is kenda 1.5/1.75.
Can i re use the stock kenda tube, on my bigger big apple 20 x 2.0?
*
It is near the edge of the rim, it is more likely pinch flat. Do you inflate the tube a little when putting into the tyre?

Buy the wider tube if you can but if you can probably use the existing narrower tube, but may be less durable esp if the quality is questionable.

Is it justify to buy a Brompton? Well, it's gear takes a lot of training to get it right. A sturney archer internal hub is yesteryear gear hub. You want to downshift to smaller gear, you need to stop pedal before you can engage in.
The gearing are wide in between, just imagine you have a 16 sp gears but it space out in 6 gears. That means every gear change it abruptly change 3 gears.
If you want to buy a Brompton for performance, pls don't. You only buy a Brompton for it's heritage and its fold size. And of course it's classics good look 😄😄
*
I don't have an issue with mine, the gears seems to change ok, perhaps a slight adjustment required? My other one that I've recently sold had the older Sachs hub and that needed to either stop or back pedal before the gear changes. However the ratios are closer together and it was actually nicer to ride without the big jump between ratios.

Brompton makes sense if the condition suits it, ie, not flat out peddling and no hills or headwind. It is perfect for touring a city and you can see more than if you are walking. Where I am, I have to battle 35+kph headwind riding home from work, so the Brompton would be a poor choice. If I have to use a folding bike, the Bike Friday Tikit and the Speed TR would be a more capable choice.

Two folds along the main frame? Hmm... not sure if that's a good idea.

My Birdy has arrived and I spent the afternoon cleaning it. Everything was very greasy and dirty! Now looks 100% better.
First impression wasn't good. This bike will be frustrating to fold. Has to be in the right gear or the chain may drop off. This is a dual drive model and the click box is in the way when the front wheel is folded in, then the handlebar will not drop down enough, so the whole this is a mess! I'll have to investigate what I can do to improve the fold.
Had a short ride and the bike feels supple but the front end feels a bit weird esp at low speed. It is not like a normal bike as the steering is not linear.
I need to replace the back tyre, so maybe I will see if going 20" wheel is a better option. I can convert it into a 9 or 10 speed. Without the Dual drive click box, the fold may be better.
Might go for a longer ride before deciding. Anyone here with a Birdy?

Bikes out for a play. The Birdy is so comfortable! I think the elastomer suspension is much better than the Moulton's.
Irritating things about the Birdy.....no where to mount a bottle cage. The bar on the expedition rack is so thick only Ortlieb pannier can fit and no where to secure the pannier bag at the bottom. The steering is very sensitive and it is cumbersome to fold. Pedals has to be in the right position etc.
The Brompton is no match in today's windy condition due to the lack of gears. Should have brought out the Speed TR or Tikit in hindsight.

Guys, I'm going to upgrade to a 20" wheelset on my Birdy. Can anyone suggest where I can buy V-brake extenders? These are to raise the brake pads higher so they can touch the rim.
Has anyone used these when upgrading from 406 to 451? I know Litepro makes them.
Thanks.

I saw them in Billy Bike Shop, Taiping. He also do online, no problem. Can call him at 012 4355000.

PS/ I also saw a Lite Pro V-brake set that has a longer reach than normal V-brakes. Get that and you might not need the extenders.

Hi Sifu,

The LitePro v-brake set is also at Billy Bike shop? I found a nice set on US EBay but the price made me cry!

Thanks!

When i put my 6 speed up for sale, no one was game enough to hand over the cash. This was for a near new bike though not the current model. As they all ride the same, what I sold for was only RM4500.

Brompton will hold its price, unless a new model is introduced. If you buy second hand you will get your money back.

Are there better bikes for the money? Absolutely, but there's only one Brompton. biggrin.gif

This was the same model and colour of the Raleigh Chopper that I ride to school in the 76s. Those days it cost RM265.00 ( a normal Ah Soh bike was only RM65.00 then ). This is already the Mark 2, second edition. You can differentiate it because Mk 2 has the handlebar swept forward. I saw one or two in Mudah.my but they were not complete and mostly have the their gear box missing. They are selling it for quite a sum as well. For those really who really wants attention, I can bet you, you will get the most attention if you ride one , refurbished in Car Free Day. Guaranteed! Bromptons are getting too common nowadays. The 3 speed Sturmey Archers are not a problem as they are not very much different from those in Brompton nowadays. But Sturmey Archer has been taken over by a Taiwanese company already so they are not made in UK anymore.

This is the Mark 1. Higher rear which was useless actually, maybe carry another friend at the back  biggrin.gif  But if we sit too far back to recline, the front of the bikes comes up very fast!

user posted image

And last year, Raleigh did a small production of limited units to satisfy the request of many former Chopper riders. Only last year they did it in limited numbers. But they looked different.

Hey, mine was a red Mark2. I often carry three other people on mine, of course we were a lot smaller back then!
