Im having a serious static problem. Largely due to the season change here - winter.
Take note - no snow, but cold.

Here's my problem. Im wearing my usual clothes - cotton, not wool. wool is worse for my problem. The thing is, im getting charged up by static.

Every night after I off the light, I can see the fire sparks created by my fingers.
In the afternoon, whatever I touch will give me a electric shock. Really shock, not mild shock. After that, it will be ok coz I'm considered "grounded" after that.
But then, the static will build up again and give me another shock around 15 minutes later.

Now.....the dilemma.
Can I use my camera without spoiling it? I scared the static is too strong it'll get spoilt.

Somemore I need to attend a wedding and shoot the day I get back to Malaysia.
No time to practise. And now I'm worried if I can operate it.

How neh?
How harmful is static to cameras? Strong static, not the comb attracting paper type

is this supposed to be normal? tried consulting a doc 1st? if there's that much current flowing through, it might damage your cam but i'm not too sure myself..

I heard about this story once. Don't know if its true or if it works, but you could give it a try. A friend of a friend of a friend had the same problem with static shock. She got so fed up about it she came up with an ingenious but simple solution. She connected two metal paper clips with a length of wire. One paper clip she put in her sock and touches her skin. The other she taped to the bottom of her shoe.

I thing should be ok wah. I ve this static problem in japan last 2 week ago. But not as often as you. I use the camera as usual. Never came into my mind that the static will kill my camera. I guess we hold the camera body and it is plastic. The body insulate the electronic parts from getting static.

Consumer products are tested against normal human static charges of up to 15kV through conductive material of the product. Usually, human static can be only up to 8kV. So, it should be safe when handling the camera even under low humid conditions.

However, you can always "ground" yourself before using your camera.

Static is always bad for electronic items, most of the operators / workers in electronic factory wears something call an anti static wrist strap to ground the charges when they are working with sensitive equipment. you can buy ready made one's in jln pasar or DIY it yourself.

basically static will kill electronic component. but ur cam will have a insulation casing, unless u are touching them in the inside, i think its ok to go?

must be the cold weather and the brushing together of your clothes.
during winter in the states, I only wore a pair of jeans, t shirt and a locally made jacket. so not too much clothing to build up the static.

wearing of socks and shoes and cap is a given so I didn't mention it above.

Static is caused by low humidity. Sometimes, static build up is dependent on individuals. Those who are more prone to static will still have a lot even without any clothing.
