It was. But currently, the rings are the ones that makes the difference between both straps since even zulu, now, comes in two strap stitched combo just like the Nato.
I guess the reason behind single strap zulu is probably a lot of watches fall off straight from the strap when taking it off.
Nato has always been with square/rectangle rings.
But a lot of online sites intend to mix it up these two names together.
It's not big of a deal really if look at it except for those zulu thick oval rings.
hmm... to my understanding, a zulu has a thicker single strap, while a nato is double but with thinner strap.I guess the reason behind single strap zulu is probably a lot of watches fall off straight from the strap when taking it off.

however no matter how we define or call it either name, it still wears the same, no?

i think all this has to be blamed to the china simply makers who have no regard for convention
zulu also should have thicker straps...which is kinda stupid once it becomes a 5-ring...especially leather...gets too thick...imagine wearing extra 4mm under ur caseback....so i usually cut the bottom layer.

now i think a 2-piece is much suited for thicker watch. already stopped looking at nato/zulu and will not buy another when current ones get spoiled.
