Hi guys. Am looking for a car to be used in the next 3 years at least. As the Malaysian property market is now rather harsh on us, I prefer to secure a house before getting a new set of wheels. Here are my options;

- a well-maintained, 2003 Altis 1.6 owned by a family friend. Car is sent to Toyota's Service Center for each and every service/ repair works etc.
(anyone with experience with the 1.6? heard it's under-powered. fuel consumption info please!). Asking for 28k

or

- a new Axia/ Saga or anything +/- 5-8k from that.

Would most probably be driving say, 150km for a return trip from work. Unless I plan to rent a place nearby, but we'll see.

Fire away! rclxms.gif

Axia or Saga new. 12 year old car, no matter God car or what, will have additional maintenance surprises. Unless you are OK with sudden expenditures, then OK la.

Yea, that's exactly what I'm worried about. To date, I personally have no experience owning a car hence the dilemma. But I do know that the 14 year-old Iswara we had set an example on how sudden expenditures can be.

Say if we're looking at driving this car for 2-3 years or so, what's your take on the resale value?

Aiyo, how u can compare a 12 years car vs new cheap axia? How much the altis asking?

For toyota car, even is a 12 year altis, is much more comfortable than a perodua.

for al years altis, basically nothing to worry, spare parts are reasonable priced and easy to get.

few thinds u can do,

1. Get a good paint job. The most important in a paint job is sent to a garage with oven and make sure a second layer of protective coat is laid with good qualltytype.

2. If car service regularly, no need to worry, as long as every 7 or 8k km are serviced with at least semi synthetic oil, then forget about overhaul.

3. Mostly, all used cars, will have oil leaked in engine block, get the engine cover gasket changed, cost about 100.

4. Alternators, conveyor belt, suspension, engine mounting, cooling fan, spark plugs, original air filter, cabin filter, once get changed, ur car is as smooth as new car.

toyota car is reliable.

Get new axia, or any new car.
IF some bad shit happens with ur used car, yes you can pay, but still...

Small car can be used by small family also.

I have a friend whose relative passed him a 2006 1.8 Altis, mileage of only 20k. If that was the case for me then no need to compare la hahaha. 28k asking price. Right now I'm not too concerned about the cosmetics. Yet. But that's a pretty good string of info there! How about fuel economy, any insights?

To my knowledge, the Axia's quite a winner if we're talking about fuel efficiency (city driving especially). Furthermore I get to pass it down to my younger sibling once I'm a lil' more.. established. So no worries about the re-sale value or anything like that.

But if you were to drive, say 130 kilometers to and from work, what's the verdict here?

it is better to buy a new car, anything happen in those few years its covered under warranty. Fuel consumption wise Axia for sure is lowest compare to Altis.

Further more you have no worries buying a new car.

20k mileage is a steal. ask for RM25k go get it. (3k maintenance/cosmetic) 150km sure needs a good sedan rather than a small car.

im using an old car too. RM2k-3k/year maintenance. better than 800rm/month paying.

I've actually always had my mind set on the Axia. Plus points everywhere. thumbup.gif technically "bigger" than the MyVi too!

axia.
150km if full highway only uses 1 bar from full tank
2 bar the most if not highway

if you dont mind a slow car, then axia is better.
130km is quite normal these days, my daily commute is round 90km+

you will be shocked at the fuel savings driving a small car. but bigger cars tend to cut me off sweat.gif

Axia will be miles away better than old altis or newer myvi. Newer tech, lower fc, higher safety rating, under warranty. The cons will only be slower than altis.

If you don't mind on the performance and comfort level, go for Saga or Axia

Used Altis - 12 years
- Even well maintenance and low mileage, the spare parts might wear + tear.
- It will cost you boom to replace it.

New car
- Most of the part comes with 3 years warranty which you no need to worry about that in 3 years times
- I believe the fuel consumption also lesser due to the car cc

How about even more savings with a second hand Axia (still within warranty period + full service record)? biggrin.gif

How's the cabin like at a highway cruising speed? Haha I'm okay with that. For now my ego's still manageable sweat.gif

I suppose I can make-do with a slower speed. As I seldom go above 95 unless I'm on the North-South Expressway! If I ever get the Axia it'll most probably be the SE/ Advance for the sake of comfort. Yes, I've also heard about getting a Standard variant + send it for a seat upgrade etc etc. nod.gif

been driving normal sedans most of my life, took a few weeks to get comfortable in a small car.

i just dont like the door handle(the inside ones).

on highways, i just keep to 100kph only. it feels light.
get an auto.

At the end of the day, I believe a new car is the way to go. Turned down the offer for the decade-old Altis yesterday. wink.gif
