ISIS sniper team silenced by direct hit from a single Paveway bomb: RAF takes out terrorists firing on Iraqi troops near Ramadi as 150 British troops fly out to wage war in Syria which is set to last three years

QUOTE
A team of ISIS snipers was killed by an RAF airstrike last night as Britain continues to step up the fight against the terror group which is set to last at least three years.

Four Tornado GR4 jets set out overnight from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, with two carrying out reconnaissance in Syria and two providing air support for the Iraqi army.

The Ministry of Defence revealed that when a 'terrorist sniper team' began firing on Britain's allies, they were 'silenced by a direct hit' from a 500lb laser-guided bomb dropped by one of the Tornados.

The RAF has transported 150 military personnel and eight additional bomber jets to Cyprus in preparation for further airstrikes within Syria, following the first raids yesterday which saw seven Paveway bombs dropped on ISIS territory.

ISIS Captures Two Villages Near the Turkish Border as They Inch Closer to Azaz

user posted image

On Thursday morning in the Aleppo Governorate’s northern countryside, the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) continued their massive offensive to seize the imperative border-crossing from the rebel stronghold of ‘Azaz to Turkey, striking the Islamist rebels of Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, Jabhat Al-Shamiyah (Levantine Front), and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) at several villages.

ISIS was successful in northern Aleppo the day before, seizing the village of Kafrah from the Islamist rebels of Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham and Jabhat Al-Shamiyah before they advanced to Baraghitah and Sheikh Reeh.

Unfortunately for the Islamist rebels of Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, Jabhat Al-Shamiyah, and the Free Syrian Army, ISIS was only beginning on Wednesday – the terrorist grous’s massive assault would follow the next day, when they seized two more villages near the Turkish border within the Aleppo Governorate.

With ISIS only a few kilometers away from the strategic city of ‘Azaz, the forces loyal to the Turkish-backed Syrian Opposition are in serious trouble as they continue to fight two different forces on two different flanks.

This whole debacle began when the Turkish-backed Islamist rebels declared war on the U.S. backed “Syrian Democratic Forces” (SDF) in northern Aleppo; this was then followed by a war between the Islamist rebels and ISIS.

Tests showcase missile vs. missile technology

user posted image

QUOTE
Lockheed describes the missile as “the world’s most advanced, and capable theater air defense missile.”

If Tactical Ballistic Missiles armed with weapons of mass destruction are launched, then the PAC-3 MSE - now armed with greater lethality - can blast off to defeat them.

Upgrades include larger fins as well as a larger, dual pulse solid rocket motor. The better motor means that the range of the missile is extended – a key advantage.

PAC-3 MSE features increased maneuverability and upgraded guidance software. The thermal batteries also help increase the performance of the missile.

Germany’s Air Force Is Falling Apart

user posted image

QUOTE
But first, we have to note that Germany uses three numbers to count its fighters. There is the total number of aircraft, the number of available aircraft and the number of deployable aircraft. There’s a difference between all three.

In other words, Germany has jets, jets it could fly and jets it can fly. Keeping track of each is standard practice for every air force.

Take the Eurofighter Typhoon. The twin-engine, canard-delta wing fighter is Germany’s most modern warplane, of which it owns 109 in three different variants. Seventy-four were available but only 42 were deployable in 2014, according a German air force report obtained by Der Spiegel.

Now look at Germany’s other fighter, the 1970s-era, variable-sweep wing Panavia Tornado — designed to speed past air defenses during the Cold War.

In total, Germany owned 89 Tornados, had 66 available and 38 deployable in 2014. That means less than half of Berlin’s fighter fleet is reliable in a war.

“The state of our flying systems remains unsatisfactory,” German army chief of staff Gen. Volker Wieker said.

Can Eurofighter Beat Its Competition on the Asian Market?

user posted image

QUOTE
Vietnam is looking to acquire modern fourth generation aircraft, preferably from a non-Russian source. An anonymous defense contractor reportedly said that several western defense companies, notably Boeing, Saab, and Eurofighter had visited Hanoi to discuss potential arms transfers. However, buying lots of American kit could antagonize Beijing unnecessarily, which probably makes it less likely that it will purchase Boeing’s Super Hornet. That leaves the “Eurocanards,” of which the Typhoon is a solid option.
QUOTE
However, Eurofighter and other companies have not given up on selling the Typhoon to Indonesia. This August, a Eurofighter team visited Jakarta, offering technology transfers and the right to assemble some of the aircraft in Indonesia, if Indonesia selects the aircraft. Under Indonesian law, new defense acquisitions must include a minimum 30 percent direct offset, while the selection criteria have been weighted 30 percent for aircraft/system performance, 30 percent acquisition/life-cycle costs, and 40 percent for industrial cooperation. In other words, this could be a solid selling point.
QUOTE
Malaysia is set to replace its ageing MiG-29s and has requested proposals from companies around the world. In addition to the Eurofighter, the Rafale, Gripen C/D and the Super Hornet are being considered. Although the odds are stacked in the Swedes’ favor due to the Gripen’s competitive price, Eurofighter still has some things going for it. For a start, like every one of the Gripen’s competitors, it features a twin-engine design, giving it better range. The Typhoon also sports the Captor-E radar, offering something like three times the coverage of the Rafale’s F3R. This piece of kit is now in production and will be in service in 2018, meaning it would be available from day one if Kuala Lumpur decides to go for Eurofighter’s aircraft.

North Korea has developed nuclear-capable missiles capable of hitting the US

user posted image

QUOTE
In an article for Johns Hopkins University’s 38 North, North Korea experts John Schilling and Henry Kan estimate that the KN-08 would have a maximum range of 5,600 miles, making the missile capable of hitting the West Coast of the continental US.

The weapon, however, is unlikely to have the accuracy required for precision targeting on large US cities. And although the Pyongyang may soon develop the capability needed to launch missiles towards the US, it’s still possible that it wouldn’t be able to evade existing US missile defenses.

“Should [a missile] get airborne and come at us, I’m confident we would be able to knock it down,” Gortney told reporters.

Russian MiG-35 Fighter Jets to Be Equipped With Brand New Navigation System

user posted image

The MiG-35 will receive the navigation system. We have signed a contract, we have to put some samples for testing at the end of this — early next year,” said Kuznetsov.

The system is designed to determine the location of the object, complex processing and delivering navigation and flight information. The system is able to determine the coordinates and parameters of an object in the autonomous mode and in the absence of terrestrial, marine or space signals.

The MiG-35 is a multipurpose 4 ++ generation fighter, it is a further development of the MiG-29K / KUB and MiG-29M / M2 combat aircraft with improved combat effectiveness and versatility, as well as improved performance.

In August, CEO of ‘MiG’ Sergey Korotkov said that the signing of the contract to supply he Russian Defense Ministry with MiG-35s is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2016. The aircraft will enter the Russian Air Force in 2018-2020.

India to purchase Russian-made Ka-226T helicopters — defense ministry

user posted image

QUOTE
NEW DELHI, December 4. /TASS/. India plans to purchase Russian-made Kamov Ka-226T (NATO reporting name: Hoodlum) light multirole helicopters, after which their joint production may be established in the South Asian republic, the Indian Defense Ministry said in a statement obtained by TASS on Friday.

India's Defense Acquisition Council has approved the expediency of a request for the purchase and subsequent joint production of Ka-226T helicopters for the Indian ground forces and the Air Force, the statement said.

The statement didn’t specify the number of helicopters, which India might purchase. At the same time, a TASS source close to the Indian Air Force said "an initial order for about 50 helicopters" was possible.

"Overall, the first stage may involve 200 Ka-226T helicopters, including purchased ready-made choppers and rotocraft produced by the joint venture in India," the source said.

‘Incursion’: Baghdad demands Turkey withdraw ‘training’ troops from northern Iraq

user posted image

QUOTE
The Iraqi government has demanded that Ankara withdraw the more than 100 Turkish forces that entered Iraq with tanks and artillery for alleged “training” of troops near Islamic State-occupied Mosul. Baghdad stressed the unsanctioned move was a breach of its sovereignty.

The Iraqi foreign ministry said in a statement early on Saturday that the Turkish troops were acting in violation of the country’s sovereignty and demanded the forces withdraw immediately. “Around one regiment armoured with tanks and artillery” has entered the northern Nineveh area, according to the statement from the Iraqi Prime Minister’s media office.

TURKEY INVADED SYRIA, CAPTURED TAL ZIYAB

user posted image

The Turkish army has built foritications at Tal Ziyab to defend the supply route which ISIS uses for smuggling the Syrian oil from the ISIS-controlled city of Raqqa to Turkey.

The Turkish army invaded the Syrian territory and took control of the hill Tal Ziyab. Troops crossed the border accompanied by bulldozers.

After occupying the high ground (50 meters), the Turkish force built fortifications. Also, 3 battle tanks, 2 armored infantry fighting vehicles and several SUVs were deployed there.

Considering the location of Tal Ziyab, Turkey wants to cover the smuggling route of the Syrian oil which is taken out of the ISIS-controlled Raqqa.

“It is a challenge to the sovereignty of Syria from the point of view of international law, and we encourage the Syrian government to protest against the international courts at the official level, – Lifenews cites one of the locals. – In the past, support for the terrorists conducted in secret, but now it is official action of the Turkish army, which requires a formal protest to the United Nations “.

It seems that Ankara has decided to act much more aggresively after the Ministry of Defense of Russia were released pictures and videos of oil delivery convoys at the border between Syria and Turkey.

We remember, on Nov. 24, the Turkish Air Force shot down Russian Su-24 in Syria. Discussing the incident Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that the Su-24 was shot down by Turkey to protect oil deliveries of the ISIS terrorist group.

Shoulder-Fired Surface-To-Air Missiles Spotted Aboard Russian Navy Ship In Turkish Strait

user posted image

QUOTE
The ship shown in the photo is the Caesar Kunikov (BDK-64), one of the Black Sea Fleet’s Ropucha class landing ships. These vessels have been supporting Russia’s mission in Syria, moving troops, material and vehicles from Russia’s Black Sea ports to their dedicated port in Tartus, Syria.

As to why they would be pulling out man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) during the transit by Istanbul is a total mystery. Sure the rhetoric has been hot between Russia and Turkey, but it is not as if Turkey would sink a Russian ship, especially one that it was escorting through its waters under the terms of the Montreux Convention.
QUOTE
Russia is no stranger to applying MANPADS to military operations. They learned the hard way just how effective these weapons can be during their decade-long war in Afghanistan, where US-made Stingers brought down many Russian aircraft, turning the tide of the war. Twenty-five years later, the use of such weapons was the bane of the Ukrainian Air Force during the height of the fighting in eastern Ukraine. In the end they claimed many Ukrainian aircraft and aircrews.

Maybe this show of force had something to do with the small fleet of NATO ships that are currently at anchor in Istanbul’s harbor. The destroyer USS Ross, along with three other NATO surface combatants, are said to entering the Black Sea soon. Combined, this will be the largest NATO force to enter the closed-in body of water since Russia’s invasion of Crimea almost two years ago.

The U.S. Navy Is Slowly Realizing It May Have to Sink Ships Again in the Future

user posted image

QUOTE
The biggest concern is China, which has made modernizing air and naval forces the number one defense priority. The People's Liberation Army Navy now totals more than 300 ships of all types, and China's shipyards are continously cranking out new aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, corvettes, submarines, and amphibious vessels.

The U.S. Navy is now, belatedly, studying ways to spread anti-ship firepower across the fleet. One answer is to give existing missiles the ability to attack surface vessels—the SM-6 air defense missile, now entering the fleet, is gaining the ability to engage ships.

The SM-6 is the latest iteration of the venerable Standard air defense missile that has armed Navy ships for decades. SM-6 is capable of engaging aircraft, ballistic missile, and even cruise missiles, and is even capable of being provided targeting information by E-2D Hawkeyes under the Navy's combat networking system.

Almost all U.S. Navy combat ships will carry the SM-6. SM-6 fits in vertical launch silos on all destroyers and cruisers, and most of these ships have a hundred or more silos. The older Harpoon system had to be carried externally in canister launchers, limiting the number of missiles that could carried.

The SM-6's biggest drawback as a ship-killer? It doesn't have a very large warhead, making it more of a ship-damager. In the 1980s, the U.S. Navy struck a small Iranian patrol boat with five SM-1 missiles, an earlier version of the SM-6, and still failed to sink it.

Death by explosive necklace, rocket launcher, or obliterated at sea: ISIS release a series of sickening execution videos from war-torn Yemen filmed in just 24 hours

user posted image

QUOTE
ISIS has released a series of depraved execution videos from Yemen whose ongoing sectarian war has allowed the terror group to spread its tentacles into the country.

Four videos show Houthi rebels, who are battling both the government and al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), being executed in different sickening scenarios in a desert location.

Six men were blown up by a rocket launcher, another six were put on a boat which was sent out to sea and exploded, four were obliterated by the mortar shells hung around their necks and nine were beheaded with sharp daggers.

Turkey is deploying troops near ISIS’s most important city

user posted image

QUOTE
Turkey is deploying over 100 military personnel in Iraq’s Mosul region in order to help train anti-ISIS fighters, Reuters reports citing a Turkish security force.

“Turkish soldiers have reached the Mosul Bashiqa region. They are there as part of routine training exercises. One battalion has crossed into the region,” the source told Reuters.

However, the source refused to disclose how many Turkish soldiers are ultimately being deployed into Iraq.

According to security sources who spoke to CNN Turk, 130 troops are entering into the Mosul region to provide training to the Kurdish Peshmerga.

The deployment of fresh Turkish soldiers into the Mosul region to train Peshmerga follows e training regiment for the Kurdish forces that was already in place. A Peshmerga spokesman told Reuters on November 22 that Turkish soldiers had begun training the Kurds three weeks earlier in various locations throughout northern Iraq.

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA-IRAQ BATTLESPACE, DEC. 4, 2015

On Thursday, the Syrian Arab Army and its allies have resumed large-scale military operations against terrorists in the provinces of Damascus, Quneitra, Aleppo, Homs and Latakia. The pro-government sources’ reports said large groups of terrorists have been killed and injured in the clashes. While such terrorists’ loses are hardly confirmed, it’s clear that the pro-government forces are intensifying its activity at the battlefield.

The recent reports confirm that vast areas of the North of Marj al-Sultan village in Damascus were liberated by the Syrian Arab Army from the control of jnad al-Sham Islamic Union and al-Nusra. The clashes in the area are continuing. Separately, the SAA is advancing towards Harasta al-Qantara and Noulah in the South of the Eastern Ghouta.

The Syrian government has deployed large reinforcements of the SAA’s 4th Mechanized Division and Hezbollah to the Southern Aleppo. Supported by the earlier arrived T-90 Tanks, these forces will play a lead role in the pro-government offensive in the area aimed to capture the strategic ICARDA agricultural facility which is located along the Aleppo-Damascus Highway. If seized, the militants will have their primary supply line cut.

On Friday morning, the Syrian forces struck back against the militants of Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham and Harakat Nouriddeen Al-Zinki, capturing the small villages of Tal Al-Baraqa, Tal Dadeen, Tal Ja’eera and Tal ‘Arba’een.

Commander of Iraq’s popular forces complain that the US is hindering the start of final phase of the operation to free Ramadi, from ISIS control. “The US bargains and pressures on the Baghdad government have prevented accomplishment of Ramadi liberation operation,” Abu Yousef al-Khazali, a commander of Seyed al-Shohada battalion, told FNA on Thursday. According to him, the Washington concerns about a high role of popular forces in anti-ISIS operations in Iraq because it increases their influence in the country.

Here’s How U.S. Special Forces Could Destroy Islamic State

user posted image

QUOTE
According to Carter, the soldiers will “conduct raids, free hostages, gather intelligence and capture ISIL leaders” and “conduct unilateral operations into Syria.”
QUOTE
“Stop every truck, destroy outposts, knock down communications,” he explains. “Get ISIS to believe that when the night falls, they don’t own their borders anymore. They only own the cities.”
QUOTE
Then the joint special operations task force should dig in. “Take 150 special forces … and fly them out to the middle of the eastern Syrian desert. Create a combat operations outpost for a day or two and at night you go out and destroy everything.”
QUOTE
“I would create a pan-Arab joint special operations task group of 2,000 men,” he explains. “I would give them some high capacity Ford F-350s with heavy machine guns … and we would start marauding over eastern Syria and northwestern Iraq.”
QUOTE
“In 72 hours the entire narrative of ISIS as an Islamic Caliphate would be crushed,” he says. “What they would be is a series of cities that are hold-up, and they can’t go on the highway because real ground forces are destroying, sniping, land mining everything.”

How US firefighters could harness the power of military drones

user posted image

QUOTE
The Stalker Extended Endurance (XE) and K-MAX drones could reinforce firefighters and potentially reduce the risk to the lives of first responders.

Last year alone, there were a staggering 1,298,000 fires reported in the U.S., resulting in more than 3,275 civilian deaths and 15,775 injuries.

Both Stalker and K-MAX are designed to be cutting-edge military tech, but they also have great potential for civilians to help reduce the loss of life and life-changing injuries suffered every year.

How do the drone duo fight fires?

Basically, Stalker XE is the boss and K-MAX does the heavy lifting. Stalker XE is a small surveillance drone and K-MAX is a large resupply helicopter one. Together, they can fight fires all by themselves. Stalker finds the fire and directs K-MAX to drop water at exactly the right location to put it out.

They’re both unmanned systems, or drones. Stalker uses its state-of-the-art military tech to flag and precisely locate a fire. The drone then communicates with the much bigger K-MAX, which is loaded up with water.

Syrian Army Seize Over 60 Square KM of Territory in Northeastern Latakia

user posted image

Over the last 2 months in the Latakia Governorate’s northeastern countryside, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade of the Republican Guard has done a complete 180 after a series of defeats at the hands of Jaysh Al-Fateh (Army of Conquest) in the Idlib Governorate and the Al-Ghaab Plains of the Hama Governorate.

Perhaps their most important gains have come in an area that was considered relatively untouchable for the last three years: the Syrian Armed Forces have powered through the Islamist rebel defenses in the well-defended Kurdish Mountains (Jabal Al-Akrad), advancing 8 km north of the strategic mountaintop at Jubb Al-Ahmar, which is situated along the border of the Idlib Governorate.

Recently, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Qurdaha, the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), and Muqawama Souri (Syrian Resistance) – have imposed control over several hilltop villages in Jabal Al-Akrad after a series of intense firefights with the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group), the Free Syrian Army’s “Liwaa Suqour Al-Ghaab”, and Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham.

As a result of these large gains in northeastern Latakia, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade and their allies have now captured over 60 square kilometers of territory from the Islamist rebels, including a big chunk of the Idlib Governorate’s border that collapsed during the Jaysh Al-Fateh offensive in the Al-Ghaab Plains.

The Syrian Armed Forces are not finished with this massive offensive in northern Latakia; instead, they still plan to push north towards the Turkish border, where they hope to cutoff one of the Islamist rebels main supply lines.

US Navy Commissions New Combat Ship for Close-to-Shore Operations

user posted image

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Navy will commission its latest littoral combat ship (LCS), the USS Jackson, on Saturday in Gulfport, Mississippi, the Department of Defense announced in a news release on Friday.

“Jackson is a fast, agile, focused-mission platform designed for operation in near-shore environments yet capable of open-ocean operation,” the release said. “It is designed to defeat asymmetric ‘anti-access’ threats such as mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast surface craft.”

Littoral combat ships are designed to mount and support amphibious operations and to operate close into hostile shores.

The Jackson’s sea frames will be outfitted with reconfigurable payloads, called mission modules made up of mission systems and support equipment to wage mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, or surface warfare missions, according to the release.

In July, the National Defense journal noted that the littoral combat ship class has been the subject of harsh criticism throughout the US defense industry as critics claim it is unsuitable for warfare and un-survivable in combat.

CAN A SMARTER GUN PREVENT A MASSACRE?

user posted image

QUOTE
The technology in Recce's gun, which can be fitted to assault rifles, would make those guns useless to those criminals. Even if privately re-sold, Sebastian says the weapon, in theory, would require reauthorization through a licensed dealer.

That the technology isn't already on gun store shelves is a problem of politics and money. After the NJIT received $1.5 million a decade ago to develop the biometric sensors, and another $250,000 to create the control system that blocks the firing mechanism during unauthorized use, the money has dried up.

"We lost all the public [funding] and we can't get private funding because no one believes pro-gun activists would ever allow this smart gun to see the light of day," says Sebastian. It's happened before. In 2014, German gunmaker Armatix introduced a .22 caliber smart gun that uses RFID technology and found dealers in California and Maryland willing to sell it. That is, until protests and death threats forced those same stores to remove the iP1 from their shelves (Armatix filed for a chapter 11-style restructuring earlier this year).

Still, with the proper funding, Sebastian believes, NJIT could produce a field-tested, evaluated, and ready-for-market smart gun in two years. It could also produce grips and firing mechanisms that could be retroactively installed on other guns. And it's the type of personalized technology that gun owners might actually find palatable.
