Israeli robotics expert: West 10 years ahead of ‘enemy’ in warfare technology

user posted image

QUOTE
The future of warfare lies within the use of robotics, says CEO of Tel Aviv-based robotics company that recently secured a $25 million contract with the Pentagon.

The West is at least 10 years ahead of “the enemy” in terms of warfare technology including robotics, assesses Israeli robotics specialist Yosi Wolf.

Wolf, the co-CEO and founder of the Tel Aviv-based company Roboteam, estimates that the scientific capabilities of Israel and other Western nations will consistently remain about a decade ahead of terrorist elements.

“If, one day, ISIS will have robots - our robots will beat theirs,” he recently told The Jerusalem Post.

TURKEY IS READY TO INVADE SYRIA, CONCENTRATED 1000 UNITS OF MILITARY EQUIPMENT AT THE BORDER

user posted image

QUOTE
Turkey has moved about 1000 units of military equipment including battle tanks Leopard 2A4 and artillery systems to the border with Syria.

According to the reports, about quater of the Turkey’s 1st Army is already located at the Syrian border. The Russian Air Force’s base in Latakia could be a target of the possible attack.

Earlier, Moscow deployed S-400 air defence systems at the Hmeymim air base where the Russian warplanes are located. Also, the cruiser Moskva armed with the Fort SAM system which is the naval version of the S-300, took up a position off the Latakia’s coast.

In turn, Turkey sent to the border with Syria electronic warfare system KORAL (Radar Electronic Attack System) to counter the Russian air defences in the region.

Turkey is ready to support ISIS militants overtly.

Tiger Forces Seize the Air Force Academy Facility and Its Surrounding Farms in East Aleppo

user posted image

On Sunday morning in the Aleppo Governorate’s eastern countryside, the Syrian Arab Army’s elite special operations division known as the “Tiger Forces” continued their large-scale offensive inside the Deir Hafer Plains, targeting the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham’s (ISIS) frontline defenses at the farms surrounding the Air Force Academy facility.

The Tiger Forces – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Aleppo City, Kataebat Al-Ba’ath (Al-Ba’ath Battalions), Hezbollah, and Harakat Al-Nujaba (Iraqi paramilitary) – began their assault at the northern farms surrounding the Air Force Academy facility, capturing them after a violent firefight with the ISIS terrorists entrenched around them.

Following the capture of the northern farms, the Tiger Forces and their allies imposed full control over the Air Force Academy facility, killing over 20 enemy combatants from ISIS, while also seizing a tractor and 3 armored vehicles mounted with 23mm anti-aircraft machine guns.

With the Air Force Academy facility and the village of ‘Aqulah captured, the Tiger Forces and their allies are rolling through the rugged Deir Hafer Plains, while the enemy combatants from ISIS are retreating all over the eastern countryside of Aleppo.

Currently, the Tiger Forces and their allies are pushing towards the village of Humaymah Al-Kabeera (east of Kuweires) and Tal Al-Ahmar (south of Kuweires), where they have been confronted by a large ISIS force – clashes ongoing this morning.

German army could deploy 1,200 soldiers to Syria: report

user posted image

QUOTE
The planned German military participation in international efforts to combat the jihadist group "Islamic State" ("IS") in Syria will involve the largest current overseas deployment of German troops, according to Bundeswehr Inspector General Volker Wieker.

"From a military point of view, some 1,200 soldiers will be needed to operate the planes and ships," Wieker told the "Bild am Sonntag" newspaper.

Wieker, who is the highest-ranking officer in the Bundeswehr, said the deployment would be able to begin very quickly once the German parliament had approved a mandate for the operation, adding that the government would seek such a mandate before the end of the year.

OWNING BLUEPRINTS TO 3D PRINT A GUN IS NOW A CRIME IN NEW SOUTH WALES

user posted image

QUOTE
Is there a difference between owning a file and owning a firearm? Thanks to the advent 3D printed guns, the line between files and weaponry is murky. The Australian province of New South Wales recently enacted a law banning the possession of files that could be used to print guns.

The Firearms and Weapons Prohibition Legislation Amendment Bill 2015 is an amendment to the Firearms Act 1996, with the purpose in part: “to create a new offence of possessing digital blueprints for the manufacture of firearms on 3D printers or electronic milling machines.” The law does include a few legal exemptions, including for "research purposes and public benefit" (so that police wouldn't get penalized if they printed one, say). Without successfully claiming those defenses, printing or milling a gun in New South Wales comes with a penalty of up to 14 years in prison.

NATO Chief Calls on Russia to Target ‘Common Enemy’ of Daesh in Syria

user posted image

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on Monday for Russia to target the Islamic State (Daesh in Arabic), a jihadist group banned in Russia, in Syria.

"I urge Russia to play a constructive role in Syria by targeting ISIL, our common enemy," Stoltenberg said at a joint press conference with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

Stoltenberg issued a similar call for Russia to be "guided by an overarching goal" of defeating Daesh after NATO’s North Atlantic Council following the downing of a Russian Su-24 jet by a Turkish fighter last week.

Singapore, Brunei Conclude Naval Exercise

user posted image

QUOTE
This year’s exercise, which ran from November 23 to November 27, was hosted by the RSN. According to Singapore’s Ministry of Defense (MINDEF), it featured command teams from the RSN’s Formidable-class frigate RSS Stalwart and Victory-class missile corvette RSS Valiant as well as the RBN’s Darussalam-class patrol vessels KDB Darussalam and KDB Darulehsan. The exercise also involved tactical discussions and simulation exercises in naval warfare – including anti-surface, anti-submarine, and anti-air operations – as well as professional sharing to deepen operational knowledge in areas like naval aviation and patrols.

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA, NOV. 30, 2015

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has deployed newly-arrived Russian T-90 advanced battle tanks to the Southern Aleppo front for the first time. The Russian battle tanks will help to continue the SAA advance on the towns of Kafraya and Al-Fou’aa.

T-90 offers the Syrian army several new features to fight ISIS including a 2A46M 125 smoothbore tank gun; a four-stroke V-12 piston engine; and most importantly, the Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armor. Much of the ISIS’ successes in Northern Syria has come from their US manufactured anti-tank TOW missiles. The T-90 Tanks’ armor should be strong enough to endure the impact from the TOW missile.

Meanwhile, the SAA, the National Defense Forces (NDF) and Hezbollah are continuing operations against ISIS in other parts of the Aleppo province. They restored full security to Aqulah village and its surroundings on Sunday.

On Monday, the SAA repelled the militant groups’ offensive on their military checkpoint near al-Aziziyah and killed or wounded at least 50 of them in the counter-assault on Monday. The pro-government forces are advancing near Deir Hafer region.

According to the Syrian sources, the leader of Ahrar al-Jabal al-Wastani Brigade, part of the 101st Division of the US-supported Free Syrian Army, Colonel Ahmad al-Ali Abu-Ayham, was killed in the fighting on Jabal al-Akrad, northeastern Latakia Governorate on Saturday.

The Turkish Radar Electronic Attack System KORAL is reportedly being sent to the border with Syria to counter the Russian S-400 systems located on the Hmeymim air base. The decision to transfer the S-400 systems to the Russian air base and was made after the Turkish Air Force had brought down the Russian Su-24 bomber in the skies of Syria.

RAF pilots WILL carry guns in case they are shot down by ISIS over Syria and need to defend themselves in a shoot-out on the ground

user posted image

QUOTE
RAF pilots asked to bomb ISIS in Syria would carry handguns to defend themselves on the ground, MailOnline can reveal today.

Britain will give sidearms to those firing on targets in 'hostile territory' after a Russian pilot was apparently killed by rebels after bailing out last week.

Russia is issuing its warplane pilots on missions over Syria with pistols and Kalashnikov machine guns after Turkey shot down a u-24 bomber.

British pilots do not always carry weapons but will if MPs vote for new bombing raids in Syria on Wednesday, an RAF source said.

Life in Raqqa: 'We are starving and face death from all sides'

user posted image

QUOTE
The city is already under attack from the US, Russia and most recently France, which stepped up its campaign in the aftermath of IS attacks this month in Paris.

Speaking to Middle East Eye from the Greek-Macedonian border, Abdullah said Raqqa's population was on the brink of starvation.

"Today, Raqqa is a dark nightmare. IS strives in every way to starve the civilian population, and it is succeeding. There is barely any electricity. Water has not been sanitised since IS took over.

"The city’s centre resembles a ghost town. Only the houses that have been forcibly taken over by members of IS receive services.

"The cost of a bag of bread has reached unbelievable prices," Abdullah said. "Despite IS threatening to cut off the hand of whoever is caught, theft has become widespread and occurs in broad daylight precisely because of the starvation."

He said more bombing would only compound the misery.
QUOTE
He said that Russian and French sorties had completely failed to hurt IS.

"The Russian air strikes are like a blind man that is striking out everywhere except for the areas where IS are," he said. "The Russian strikes are raining down on civilians.

"The French air strikes are reactionary, random, and not calculated despite the fact that no civilians were killed and the strikes managed to target IS bases."
QUOTE
Shashank Joshi, a senior research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, says that while there is no doubt that air strikes are retaliatory, he does not believe that the coalition, especially France, is "playing into IS’s hands".

“I see no reason to believe that these air strikes were indiscriminate or unguided," he said. "Any serious state, particularly one like France that is very actively involved in Syria, and has a strong sense of pride and independence, is always going to react to incidents like this."

Joshi conceded it was difficult to get any information from Raqqa, which he described as a "black hole, primarily because of the way IS have kidnapped and murdered forces so frequently".

Russia Pounds Turkey’s Allies in Syria

user posted image

QUOTE
The Turkmen have a long military history in Syria. They entered the Levant with the Seljuk Empire and the Sultanate of Rum, both of which overcame and succeeded Arab and Persian dynasties.

Living under competing Islamic empires during the Crusades, the Turkmen experienced more stability under the Ottoman Empire, which secured Aleppo and its countryside during the 1516 Battle of Marj Dabiq against the Mamluk Sultanate.

The Turkmen rulers switched from Arabs to Turks once again, and the Turkmen enjoyed this national relationship with Constantinople for several hundred years, settling throughout the countrysides of Aleppo, Hama, Homs, Idlib and Latakia. The Ottomans hoped to use Turkmen settlers from Central Asia as a bulwark against Arab tribesmen.
QUOTE
According to analyst Nicholas Heras writing at the Jamestown Foundation:

Syria’s Turkmen communities are active participants in the Syrian opposition and stand to benefit from this participation in any post-Assad Syrian state. The political and diplomatic support of the Turkish government, in the context of weakened Al Assad government control over many regions of the country, provides Syrian Turkmen opposition groups with a benefactor as they position themselves to participate in a potential post-Assad transition period. Syrian Turkmen leaders appear to be pursuing citizenship-based representation in a future Syrian government and thus far appear to be carefully seeking to legitimize their community’s status as “Syrians” in a diverse Syrian polity.
QUOTE
Turkey considers the Syrian Turkmen Brigades decisive in its fight against the Islamic State. “Turkmen are Turkey’s ethnic kin but the world should understand that there is a bigger issue at stake here,” a Turkish official told Reuters.

“We are extremely worried that the anti-Islamic State coalition is being weakened by these bombardments. How could a campaign against Islamic State be conducted by bombing these rebels which are actually battling Islamic State?”

ISIS Staggers as the Tiger Forces Advance in East Aleppo

user posted image

The battle for east Aleppo has taken the turn for the worse for the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) as they continue to concede several kilometers of territory to the Syrian Arab Army’s “Tiger Forces” in just a short period of time.

Since the Tiger Forces lifted the siege at the Kuweires Military Airport, ISIS has been on the run, abandoning several villages and hilltops due to the scarcity of provisions and the shortage of manpower against the large battalions of the Syrian Arab Army and Hezbollah.

Unfortunately for ISIS, the situation did not get any better for them on Monday as they lost the ‘Aqulah Farms that are located at the southeastern perimeter of ‘Aqulah village; this loss has allowed for the Syrian Armed Forces to gain access to the strategic hilltops that ISIS used to fire repeated rounds of mortar shells and rockets into the Kuweires Military Airport.

With ‘Aqulah under their control, the Tiger Forces will set their sights on the imperative hilltop village of Tal Al-Ahmar; if captured, ISIS will no longer be able to rain mortar shells and rockets into the Kuweires Military Airport while seeking cover around the hilltops surrounding the village.

North of the Kuweries Military Airport, the Syrian Arab Army’s 2nd Division – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Aleppo City and Hezbollah – seized more points along the Aleppo-Raqqa Highway, pushing further east of the Kuweries Military Airport and the village of Rasm ‘Abboud.

Currently, firefights are still ongoing at the Tal Humaymah-Humaymah Kabeera axis, where the Syrian Armed Forces are trying to fight their way into this village.

Pentagon warns Russia’s against arming its warplanes in Syria with air-to-air missiles

user posted image

QUOTE
WASHINGTON, December 1. /TASS/. Russia’s arming its Su-34 warplanes in Syria with air-to-air missiles can only complicate an already difficult situation in Syria’s airspace, Pentagon spokesperson Michelle Baldanza told TASS on Monday.

"Such systems will further complicate an already difficult situation in the skies over Syria and do nothing to further the fight against ISIL [the former name of the terrorist group Islamic State which is outlawed in Russian] as they have no air force," she said. "·We expect that if Russia follows through, they will abide by our Memorandum of Understanding regarding flight safety and not direct this system against Coalition aircraft."

DARPA ABANDONS PLAN TO LAUNCH SATELLITES FROM FIGHTER JETS

user posted image

QUOTE
The holy grail of small satellite launch is a cost of $1 million or less per launch, and DARPA’s been chasing it for years. The F-15 offered the potential to launch small satellites from anywhere the powerful fighter could reach, which was most places. But before the testing of fighter-borne launches could proceed, a specific rocket fuel had to work. And at two tests this year, that fuel failed spectacularly.

Space News reports:

“The magic” in Boeing’s design, as DARPA officials described it, was the powerful nitrous oxide-acetylene propellant, also known as NA-7. The propellant would be “pre-mixed” to reduce the plumbing needed on the rocket, enabling it to carry more payload.

Boeing led two subsystem tests in Promontory, Utah – one in August and one in April – aimed at learning how the pre-mixed propellant reacted to different temperatures, pressures and atmospheric conditions. In both tests, the propellant exploded.

Without a stable propellant, DARPA has abandoned plans to use the F-15 as a satellite mothership. Instead, they will pursue small satellite launch through other means ... such as an experimental spaceplane.

US reportedly supplying Ukraine military with obsolete equipment

user posted image

QUOTE
The U.S. has been supplying Ukrainian forces with obsolete equipment, some of which dates back almost thirty years, according to a published report.

The Washington Post reported that Ukrainian government forces battling Russia-supported rebels in the east of that country have called into question Washington's commitment to them based on the shoddy gear. The paper also reported that the lack of sufficient equipment has bred distrust and lowered Ukrainian morale.

The Pentagon has provided Kiev with more than $260 million in non-lethal military equipment since the start of the conflict last year. However, the Post report says that some of the gear is "secondhand stuff", in the words of one Ukrainian special forces commander.

Among the outdated supplies are Humvees dating from the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to the Post, which cited the vehicles' serial numbers in its report. In another case, an infantry unit of 120 soldiers received a single bulletproof vest, of a type that U.S. forces stopped using in the mid-2000s.

The Post reported that the Pentagon had no official comment on the condition of the equipment. However, one anonymous U.S. defense official told the paper that because the U.S. was unprepared for Russia to get involved in the conflict, they had to respond to Ukraine's requests for aid "as fast as possible."

Former Military Chief Rips Bush, Obama: Iraq War Helped Create Islamic State

user posted image

QUOTE
Lt. General Michael Flynn, former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, has been outspoken in his criticism of the Obama administration’s handling of the Islamic State before, but his new interview in Der Spiegel contains some of his toughest words yet, and he offers stern criticism of the Bush administration as well.
QUOTE
He thought it was a serious error to assume the Islamic State’s foreign operations would require anything comparable to a Western command hierarchy. “There’s not some line-and-block chart and a guy at the top like we have in our own systems. That’s the mirror imaging that we have to, in many ways, eliminate from our thinking,” Flynn advised. “I can imagine a 30-year-old guy with some training and some discussion who receives the task from the top: ‘Go forth and do good on behalf of our ideology.’ And then he picks the targets by himself, organizes his attackers and executes his mission.”
QUOTE
Another error he advised purging from Western strategic thought is the belief that ISIS could be laid low by taking out Baghdadi with a “decapitation strike.” In fact, he offered a dim view of decapitation theory and regime change fantasies under both Presidents Bush and Obama. Terrorist organizations like ISIS and al-Qaeda have made martyrs of their dead leaders and proven themselves distressingly good at replacing each slain terror chief with a more skilled and vicious successor.
QUOTE
As for regime change operations against Middle Eastern nations, Flynn views the invasions of Iraq and Libya as mirror-image disasters. “It was a huge error,” he said of the Iraq war. “As brutal as Saddam Hussein was, it was a mistake to just eliminate him. The same is true for Moammar Gadhafi and for Libya, which is now a failed state. The historic lesson is that it was a strategic failure to go into Iraq. History will not be and should not be kind with that decision.”
QUOTE
He said the U.S. has made some “dumb” mistakes in the past, such as letting Baghdadi out of American custody in 2004 because a dysfunctional military intelligence system mistakenly judged him harmless. There seem to be no shortages of mistakes to learn from in Flynn’s estimation, stretching back to before the first hijacked airliner slammed into the World Trade Center.
