SAS: Britain's elite military unit 'out of control', says parents of soldier who died on controversial selection course

user posted image

QUOTE
L-Cpl Maher from Micheldever, Hampshire, died during a gruelling 26-mile endurance march in the Welsh Brecon Beacons in July 2013. Lance-Corporal Craig Roberts, 24, from Llandudno, North Wales, also died from heat exhaustion on the same day. Corporal James Dunsby, 34, from Trowbridge, Wiltshire, collapsed on the march and was airlifted to hospital, dying from multiple organ failure two weeks later.

A coroner concluded that a catalogue of “serious mistakes and systemic failures” by the military, amounting to “neglect”, were to blame for their deaths. The inquest heard evidence that those running the SAS selection course were either ignorant of or failed to follow the Army’s own safety guidelines.

Video: Military Advances of Syrian Pro-Government Forces against US-NATO Sponsored ISIS Rebels

The situation is continuing to develop fast in Syria. Since the start of full-scale military operation in late October, the pro-government forces have gained a number of success in the Aleppo province. It allowed the Assad government to strengthen its diplomatic position and encouraged its allies. Hezbollah and Iraqi Shia militias led by Iranian military advicers are main supporters of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in this area. The Russian Aerospace Defence Forces are playing a crucial role in the pro-government forces’ military operations there.

The Syrian forces have been advancing through 3 main axis. First is the Latakia countryside. The Syrian forces have captured the strategic city of Gamam at this axis. It allows the SAA and allies to prevent the terrorist groups located at the Turkmen and Kurdish Mountains from creating a joint force there. It also allows the pro-government forces to threat the terrorist positions at the borders with Idlib and Hama.

Second axis is the city of Aleppo. The Syrian forces are advancing on it from the South East. In November the SAA lifted the ISIS siege from the Kuweires air base, deblocked the Damascus-Aleppo road and cut the ISIS supply line between Raqqa and Aleppo. Now the Syrian forces are advancing on the Eastern part of Aleppo. ISIS and the Jaish al-Fatah military operations coalition led by Al Nusra are main opponents of the pro-government forces in this axis.

Third axis are areas located at the Homs-Hama border. The SAA and allies have gained main successes at the South East part of the Hama province where ISIS militants operate. The Homs-Hama-Aleppo road is a main aim of the military operations there.

After the incident with a Russian Su-24 downed by Turkey, the Russian Aerospace Defence Forces have raised their activity in Syira. The areas at the border with Turkey controlled by Turkey-backed militants and al Nusra became a first target of the intensified air raids. Nonetheless, there is no background to expect that Russia will calm down its Air Force’s activity.

Meanwhile, Moscow deployed S-400 missile defense systems to its air base near Latakia. Russian guided missile cruiser «Moskva» joint with escort ships is taking location at the shore zone of Northern Latakia near the Turkish border. The Russian military will likely continue to intensify its operations in Syria. Ongoing crisis with Turkey is one of the main reaons for this step. We could expect that foreign supporters of terrorist groups such Al Nusra and ISIS will also intensify their actions in Syria. Thus, the stakes are rising up in the Syrian conflict.

8 slain suspected terrorists not Isis, says military

user posted image

QUOTE
COTABATO CITY—The military reiterated on Saturday that the eight men killed in Thursday’s clash in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat, were members of a newly emerged terror group called Ansar Al-Khilafa Philippines and that one of the slain suspects was an Indonesian bomb expert.

Maj. Gen. Edmundo Pangilinan, commander of the Maguindanao-based 6th Infantry Division, issued the statement, even as a ranking official of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) decried the deaths of two of the suspects.

Pangilinan said Indonesian Ibrahim Alih, a member of the Mujahideen Indonesian Timur (MIT), was among the eight men killed.

The MIT, founded by Santoso, is a jihadist group listed by Washington as among terror organizations operating in Southeast Asia, which has ties with al-Qaida. MIT’s Santoso was among those linked to the Bali bombings and attacks on policemen in Indonesia, using crude, homemade bombs.

Pangilinan said Alih, also known as Abdul Fatah and Abu Fattah, was first arrested in Zamboanga City for illegal possession of firearms in 2005 but was released in 2013 due to lack of merit of the case filed against him.

He said Alih had since been monitored with the group of Mohamad Jaafar Maguid, alias Commander Tokboy, after his release.

Lawyer Sahara Silongan, the solicitor general of the ARMM, has cried foul, however, saying that two of the eight slain men were her cousins.

'Locals helping Abu Sayyaf'

user posted image

QUOTE
KUALA LUMPUR: Abu Sayyaf operatives have been planted in strategic areas in Sabah, ready to carry out kidnap-for-ransom assignments the minute they get the “go-ahead”.

A global specialist working together with governments and enforcement agencies to combat terrorism in Southeast Asia has revealed that the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) was getting a lot of “help” from locals and “assessment experts” (lookouts) stationed at airports, to identify targets among tourists.

Counter-terrorism specialist Andrin Raj, who is also the Southeast Asia regional director for the International Association of Counter terrorism and Security Professionals (IACSP) told the New Straits Times a Filipino group known as the “Knights of the Right Keeper” and based in Sabah was supporting the ASG, paving ways for the terror group to carry out kidnap-for-ransom activities.

“Besides having their operatives rooted in Sabah and areas outside the state, they also has a large network that allows them to tap critical information. ASG also have the support of local sympathisers and members of the Knight of The Right Keeper, who hold dual nationality or permits, allowing their presence here to go unsuspected.

“There are other operatives linked to the ASG operating from within the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) and other airports in the state,” he said.
QUOTE
Once identified, he said, the operatives would provide detailed information on the targeted tourists’ residence and duration of stay as well as other |information to facilitate the kidnapping.

Raj said Malaysian authorities were on high alert and prepared to thwart potential attacks, knowing that the ASG would up their ante in their kidnapping activities, one of their sources of funding.

He said ASG, deemed as one of the most complex terror groups in the region, would target tourists as it was also a ticket to get international attention.

“Malaysian kidnapped victims are just a ‘collateral damage’.”
QUOTE
Raj also told the NST that the ASG might continue to abduct tourists from Sabah.

“They know fully well which states would meet their ransom demand and, yes, they will continue to take advantage.

Raj, who is currently in Turkey to brief Turkish officials and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation on other global terror threats, said both Kuala Lumpur and Manila had long shared security intelligence, including deploying military officers at the respective regions.

MANILA - All military units went on alert Sunday for possible retaliation from the Abu Sayyaf Group ASG following the arrest of a key aide of two ASG believed behind a rash of kidnappings in Sabah.

The suspect, Kadaffy Kamsa, was arrested Saturday inside a hospital in Barangay Asturias in Jolo, Sulu, where he was brought for injuries suffered in a road crash, according to Navy Captain Roy Trinidad, spokesman of the Joint Task Force “Zambasulta” (Zamboanga, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi).

The suspect was handcuffed to his bed and was being guarded by security forces.

Meet the Chinese military’s new ‘jeep’

user posted image

QUOTE
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China have reportedly selected their next official off-road SUV; the Yongshi Warrior. These have actually been around for years, but have just been green-lit for official military duty.

Chinamil says six variations of the vehicle were vetted, and have been running all over China for over three-quarter-million miles of testing since 2007.

Details on what, if any, special treatment the military-spec version get seems scarce. But we do know that the Yongshi Warrior was built by supersized Chinese car-making conglomerate Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co., Ltd. (BAIC). Specifically, a division called Beijing Automobile Works Co., Ltd. (BAW) that specializes in off-road vehicles and light trucks.

The Yongshi Warrior is said to have an all-metal fully enclosed body, with joints sealed-in “for more reliability” and ostensibly protection. Apparently a “soundproof cotton” mitigates engine noise inside the cabin.

An indvidual named Li Qinnan, identified as a “researcher of the vehicle,” is quoted saying; “The SUV uses supercharging electrically controlled common rail diesel engine system suitable for plateau environment. The engine system can effectively enhance the power and acceleration performance of the vehicle, even in snow-covered plateau areas.”

I’m Sure They’re Being Tortured’: U.S. Ally Accused Of Abusing ISIS Prisoners

user posted image

QUOTE
On October 22, a team of Kurdish soldiers, backed up by elite commandos from the U.S. Army’s Delta Force, raided an ISIS prison compound in the Iraqi town of Hawija, where Kurdish intelligence indicated dozens of their own peshmerga fighters were being held. It turned out there were no Kurds in the prison, but 69 hostages were freed, and more than 20 ISIS fighters were killed.

The Kurds also took six ISIS fighters as their prisoners. And now, U.S. officials and humanitarian aid workers in the region tell The Daily Beast, it appears those prisoners are being tortured in Kurdish custody, in violation of international law.

“I am sure they are being tortured, no question,” said a U.S. defense official in Iraq who is familiar with raid and spoke on condition of anonymity. He noted that Americans do not have access to them, but added, “You have to remember where we are. Torture is pervasive.”

Galactic Warfighters Bridges The Gap Between Science Fictional War And Reality

user posted image

QUOTE
Matthew Callahan joined the US Marine Corps six years ago, where he now serves as a combat correspondent. Recently, he’s been working on a photography project called Galactic Warfighters, showing off the wars in Star Wars.

For the project, he’s been taking clone trooper action figures, and pairing them up with captions that describe what they’re doing from a military perspective.

Advanced Recon and Airborne Commandos fire a Mk 153 shoulder-fired multi-purpose assault weapon during joint weapons system familiarization training. The projectile explosive weapon is used to bust tanks and bunkers for light infantry. The troopers worked together as gunners and assistant gunners to get used to operating in the same environment together for future operations.

Callahan noted that his experience in the military has given the project some credibility to how he’s told these small stories: “The vignettes I write about these photographs reflect a myriad of experiences and hardships real men and women I’ve known in the service have encountered before, no matter how big or small.”

Tiger Forces Advance on the Strategic City of Deir Hafer as ISIS Falls Apart in East Aleppo

user posted image

The city of Deir Hafer in the Aleppo Governorate’s eastern Aleppo has long been a stronghold for the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS); however, as of recently, the city has been under its greatest threat since the aforementioned terrorist group first seized it in late 2013.

Two months ago, the thought of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) threatening ISIS at Deir Hafer would have been brushed off for being illogical and unrealistic; but, this all changed in late September when the Russian Air Force began their aerial campaign to forestall the Islamist groups advancing in Syria.

Fast forward two months later, the Syrian Arab Army’s elite special operations division known as the “Tiger Forces” is now within 5km from the western district of Deir Hafer, leaving ISIS in a vulnerable position with very little reserves to combat the advancing enemy army.

Adding to ISIS’ plight in east Aleppo is the recent arrival of fresh reinforcements from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hezbollah, and Harakat Al-Nujaba (Iraqi paramilitary) that are going to give the Syrian Arab Army the necessary boost they need to advance on Deir Hafer.

On Saturday morning, the Tiger Forces announced the capture of the ‘Aqulah after a brief firefight with the ISIS militants protecting this village to the south of the Kuweires Military Airport.

As a result of the loss of ‘Aqulah, ISIS’ is facing a serious threat at the strategic hilltop village of Tal Al-Ahmar, which is another gateway to Deir Hafer front as it sits on the seasonal road leading to the aforementioned city.

Since losing the Kuweires Military Airport earlier this month, ISIS’ defenses have been falling apart all over the Aleppo Governorate’s eastern countryside; this has paved the way for the Tiger Forces and their allies to advance into areas that were once considered untouchable.

If Deir Hafer is captured by the Tiger Forces, the Syrian Armed Forces will be in position to reenter the Al-Raqqa Governorate after being expelled by ISIS in August 2014.

Erdogan Shot Down By Army Chief for Commenting on Downed Russian Bomber

user posted image

QUOTE
The main reason for the discord was the comment of the Turkish president, which came in the aftermath of the attack, claiming that Ankara did not know the warplane was Russian when targeting it.

According to the Turkish-language daily, Sözcü, Erdogan and the Turkish army's joint chief of staff are now at odds over the attack and the following comments.

The Turkish paper quotes an informed military source as saying that Erdogan had taken a "hasty" position and declared that the army had been unable to identify the nationality of the plane in official remarks, "and this complicated the problem".

"Had the politicians kept quiet, we could have resolved the problem very fast," the newspaper quotes an unnamed military source as saying.

The Maritime Dimension of Britain’s New Strategy

user posted image

QUOTE
The strongest signal of the U.K. government’s intent to reemerge as a global maritime power was communicated in the decision to establish continuous carrier strike capability by operating two aircraft carriers. These ships and embarked aircraft will be able to deliver hard power through traditional carrier strike and maneuver missions, provide support for amphibious operations, improve conventional deterrence and soft power capability, and serve as highly effective tools of diplomacy and deterrence. The formation of an additional F-35B squadron is a tangible move to ensure tactical combat aircraft are available by the early 2020s, when both carriers will be ready for operations. Critics may contend that the procurement timeline is too slow to meet the carriers’ full operating capacity of approximately 36 embarked aircraft per ship, but the significance of this accelerated investment should not be underestimated, especially given that the 2015 SDSR also reaffirms the United Kingdom’s intent to purchase 138 aircraft over the life of the program. The Royal Navy will still be forced to navigate manning challenges proactively, as the 2015 SDSR only calls for an increase of 400 navy personnel – far short of the 2,500 personnel requested by Royal Navy leadership. Lastly, it is worth noting that the SDSR places conspicuous emphasis on U.S.-U.K. interoperability through regular planning and training, with a stated goal of achieving the ability “to fly aircraft from each other’s ships.” This statement is particularly important because it opens the door to operate U.S. Marine F-35Bs from U.K. aircraft carriers, a development which would represent a quantum leap in interoperability and cooperation. Such integration would not be unprecedented; in 2007, a squadron of Marine AV-8B Harriers embarked HMS Illustrious during a joint training exercise. Although an operational deployment would require extensive planning and preparation, leadership on both sides of the Atlantic should consider the benefits and drawbacks of embarking Marine aircraft to build allied strike capacity on U.K. carriers.

Laser-guided British missile on standby to wipe out terror chiefs

user posted image

QUOTE
Britain's precision missiles could be used to cut off the ‘snake’s head’ of Islamic State and instil fear at the top of the terror group if attacks in Syria are authorised.

The laser-guided Brimstone missile, which can hit a small, fast-moving target, could be used by RAF pilots to assassinate IS leaders one by one.

Britain and Saudi Arabia are currently the only two countries in the world to have invested in Brimstones.
QUOTE
The British-designed missile destroys its target with a contained explosion that generates relatively little debris.

It is far more sophisticated than the Americans’ Hellfire weapons, which generate a large and deadly field of shrapnel when they explode.

The £100,000 Brimstone – which was used against Colonel Gaddafi’s regime in Libya in 2011 – can be fired from a Tornado GR4 at 20,000ft and is capable of hitting vehicles travelling at up to 70mph.

It can be launched from a plane which is flying up to seven miles away from its target.

Each missile has a small but highly focused explosive warhead – which reduces the chance of shrapnel hitting civilians – as well as an adjustable fuse which allows the pilot to decide exactly when it will explode.

MARINES GET CLOSER TO NEW AMPHIBIOUS VEHICLES

user posted image

QUOTE
The Corps first started looking for a new amphibious vehicle back in 2011. Their current floating swimming waterproof truck, the Assault Amphibious Vehicle, entered service with the Marines in the 1970s.

Extending the range across water from 2 miles to 12 miles

This aging armored vehicle can move at up to 10 miles-per-hour in the water and up to 45 mph on the land, carries 21 Marines in the back (not counting its 3-Marine crew), has a grenade launcher and a .50 caliber machine gun for protection, and can drive up to 300 miles on shore once it lands. An improvement over previous landing craft like World War II’s iconic Higgins boats, the vehicle doesn’t just carry troops to shore, it goes with them into battle and helps ensure they can take the beach and keep on going.

Replacing the Assault Amphibious Vehicle means doing all of the same, while adding new features. One major limitation of the old vehicle is that it had to launch from a ship within two miles of the coast. Plenty of anti-tank missiles have ranges close to or over two miles. Besides the risk to the transports themselves, being that close to shore is dangerous for the ships unloading the landing craft, as it puts them in very close range for a variety of anti-ship weapons.

The new requirements for the Amphibious Combat vehicle reduce the number of Marines carried inside, but increase the distance traveled six times, so they can travel up to 12 miles before needing to hit land. It will have wheels, unlike the tracks of its predecessor, and to fit with current threats, it will have some protection against landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA, NOV. 29, 2015

Russia is ready to coordinate practical steps to block the Turkish-Syrian border in cooperation with Damascus, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Friday after talks with his Syrian counterpart. Lavrov recalled that French President Francois Hollande earlier voiced same proposal. If Russia, Syria, France block the border, many terrorists groups in Syria, such as ISIS and al Nusra, will be cut from the supplies through Turkey.

On Saturday, the Syrian army spokesman, Brigadier General Ali Mayhoub, said, the Turkey military fired a number of mortar shells toward Syrian army positions from the Mount Jebel Aqra area, which is on the Turkish side. Apparently, it isn’t an act of support of the ideas to block the border. According to Damascus Turkey has also increased weapon, ammunition and equipment shipments into Syria in exchange for oil and antiquities looted by ISIS.

The Syrian army and the National Defense Forces (NDF) and Hezbollah seized back the areas of al-Markashileh and Jab al-Ahmar in the Northern parts of Lattakia province on Saturday. The Syrian forces pushed back the militant groups and restored full security to al-Rahmalia and al-Khidr hills.

According to the field reportrs, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), the NDF and Hezbollah backed up by the Russian Air Force launched an advance to capture the strategic town of Quayratayn form the ISIS in the Homs province on Saturday. Now, the pro-government forces took control of the villages of Muntar Armilah and Thaniyah and advancing on Quayratayn. A number of pro-Syrian media outlets said Russia has vowed continued fight against terrorists in Syria using its warships. Moscow will reportedly launch massive operations codenamed ‘Total Destruction’ against the terrorists using 69 Sukhoi fighter jets, Tupolev 160 bombers, submarines and warships deployed in the Mediterranean Sea. The Russian grouping will be supported by S-400 missile defense systems in deployed Syria and the Moskva guided missile cruiser outfitted with S-300F Fort anti-air systems at the coast of Latakia.

Turkey finances elimination of thousands of Muslims - Kadyrov

user posted image

QUOTE
Moscow, November 30, Interfax - Head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov denied accusations of Turkish media claiming he stood against Islam and blamed the Turkish authorities in destroying Islamic countries and nations.

"Mass media and social nets write that Turkey has always helped Chechnya. They try to reproach me saying that I am against Islam and support the unfaithful. I like to be concrete: when, where and how did Turkey help my people?" Kadyrov writes in his Instagram page.

According to him, Turkey helped not Chechnya, but Wahabis who "committed terrorist attacks, killed Chechen people," and today authorities of this country do not fight the ISIS, but support this organization.

"Turkey does not fight the ISIS. It has business with them, buys oil, finances enemies of Islam, who are killing thousands of Muslims," the Chechen head said.

British troops will be needed on ground to defeat Isil in Syria, former military chief signals - Telegraph

user posted image

QUOTE
The Prime Minister is expected to ask MPs to back airstrikes in Syria within days but has insisted there will be no British troops on the ground.

Instead, he believes the estimated 70,000-strong armies of moderate Syrian forces can defeat Isil with the support of western airpower.
QUOTE
However, General Sir Richard Shirreff, the former Nato deputy supreme allied commander Europe, said they would not be strong enough and would need western forces alongside if they want to recapture the terrorist group’s strongholds such as Raqqa.

"It's not something you are going to achieve with 70,000 so-called Syrian moderates," he said.

"To take a city of 350,000 is going to need a massive force. Any fighting in cities soaks up troops in a massive way. It's very heavily attritional, it's bloody and it's a grim business."
QUOTE
He said that although the UK has around 72 Tornados only a limited number are available for operations because support units are being wound down as the jet approaches retirement in 2019.

He said: “Inevitably towards the end of the Tornado's lifespan everything which keeps it in the skies is wound down - that's simply a fact of retiring the aircraft.

“We simply couldn't sustain a deployment of 24 with the numbers of Tornado we have now. For every one you send out on a mission, you need two more in readiness, just to maintain the operational tempo.”

Asian arms race: Russia sells its Su-35 ‘Flanker’ to China, Indonesia

user posted image

QUOTE
The Su-35 comes packed with its latest advances: The Irbis-E passive electronically scanned radar array and its Saturn AL-117S supercruise-capable engines.
QUOTE
The radar has the potential to see-through the West’s stealth technology, negating the sole practical advantage of vulnerable aircraft such as the B-2 “Spirit” stealth bomber and F-35 “Lightning II” strike fighter.

The engine, combined with the Su-35’s size, give it the ability to roam over large distances and to linger over sensitive locations in order to enforce China’s claims. Most Western aircraft, such as the F/A-18 and F-35, can only do this with the support of vulnerable, slow tanker aircraft.
QUOTE
It can also react quickly: It has a top speed of 2390km/h. The F/A-18 ‘Super Hornet’ can go 1915km/h. The F-35C reportedly pushes 1930km/h.

Backing all this up is the Su-35’s ability to sustain more than the force of nine gravities while manoeuvring, as well as being able to flick its nose in almost any direction. While the art of dogfighting may have had its day, this ability does offer the Su-35 another key advantage over its Western counterparts: It can theoretically dodge incoming missiles.
