INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA-IRAQ BATTLESPACE, NOV. 25, 2015

On Wednesday morning, the Syrian Al-Qaeda group “Al-Nusra” supported by Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, Jund Al-Aqsa and Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen launched a powerful assault on the Al-Zahra Association Quarter in the Aleppo province’s western countryside. The Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) positions near the Great Prophet Mosque and the Air Force Intelligence (AFI) building were hit.

Following a series of intense firefights, the terrorists temporarily captured the Great Prophet Mosque. But, they were unable to advance forward after the Russian Air Force’s warplanes conducted air raids against them. Then, the SAA launched a counter-assault to recapture the territory around the western sector of the Al-Zahra Association Quarter that was lost to the terrorists.

In northern Aleppo, Jaysh Al-Mujahiddeen and Al-Nusra conducted a full-scale offensive on the town of Bashkoy. Unfortunately, for the terrorists, they were unable to advance into the Al-Afghani Farms and retreated to the nearby village of Rityan. According to the local sources, about 60 terrorists were killed in these clashes.

The SAA in coordination with the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) imposed full control over Katf Al-Ghanimah and Point 1154 around Kabani last night. 25 terrorists from Al-Nusra and its allied groups of the Free Syrian Army and Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham were killed. The Syrian forces mop-up operations in areas to the East of the recently-recaptured Marj al-Sultan airbase in the Damascus province. Al Nusra positions in Douma and near Adam gas station in Aliya farms were destroyed, the reports said.

The SAA, the NDF and Hezbollah advanced against ISIS near al-Hayyal and deployed their units in the Southern side of Palmyra. According to the pro-government forces, the Syrian warriors are preparing to launch a final advance on the city, while the Russian Air Force strikes the Palmyra Military Airport and the road leading to the East district.

China Tests New Hypersonic Weapon

user posted image

QUOTE
The DF-ZF is an ultra-high-speed missile allegedly capable of penetrating U.S. air defense systems based on interceptor missiles.

The launch of the DF-ZF took place at the Wuzhai missile test center in central China’s Shanxi Province. A ballistic missile transported the DF-ZF HGV near the edge of the atmosphere, where it separated from its launcher and then glided to an impact range a few thousands kilometers away in western China, according to The Washington Free Beacon.

“The DF-ZF flight was tracked by U.S. intelligence agencies and flew at speeds beyond Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound,” Gertz notes. Previous tests of the DF-ZF took place on June 7, January 9, and August 7, 2015, and December 2, 2014.

As I noted in my previous piece, the DF-ZF warhead is carried to the boundary between space and Earth’s atmosphere, approximately 100 km above the ground, by a large ballistic missile booster. Once it reaches that height, it begins to glide in a relatively flat trajectory by executing a pull-up maneuver and accelerates to speeds of up to Mach 10.

The gliding phase enables the HGV not only to maneuver aerodynamically – performing evasive actions and evading interception – but also extends the range of the missile.

Look Inside ISIS's Secret Tunnels

user posted image

QUOTE
IRBIL, Iraq (AP) — Under the Iraqi town of Sinjar, Islamic State group militants built a network of tunnels, complete with sleeping quarters, wired with electricity and fortified with sandbags. There, they had boxes of U.S.-made ammunition, medicines and copies of the Quran stashed on shelves.

The Associated Press obtained extensive video footage of the tunnels, which were uncovered by Kurdish forces that took the city in northwestern Iraq earlier this month after more than a year of IS rule.

"We found between 30 and 40 tunnels inside Sinjar," said Shamo Eado, a commander from Sinjar from the Iraqi Kurdish fighters known as peshmerga. "It was like a network inside the city."

"Daesh dug these trenches in order to hide from airstrikes and have free movement underground as well as to store weapons and explosives," Eado said using an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group. "This was their military arsenal."

The video, shot by a freelancer touring the town with Kurdish fighters, showed two tunnels running several hundred meters (yards), each starting and ending from houses, through holes knocked in walls or floors.

The narrow tunnels, carved in the rock apparently with jackhammers or other handheld equipment, are just tall enough for a man to stand in. Rows of sandbags line sections of the walls, electrical wires power fans and lights and metal braces reinforce the ceilings. One section of the tunnel resembled a bunker. Dusty copies of the Quran sit above piles of blankets and pillows. Prescription drugs — painkillers and antibiotics — lie scattered along the floor.

In another section of the tunnel, the footage shows stocks of ammunition, including American-made cartridges and bomb-making tools.

Head of Iran's Revolutionary Guards wounded in Syria fight

user posted image

QUOTE
General Qassem Soleimani, commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards' foreign operations wing, has been lightly injured in fighting against Syria rebels near Aleppo, a monitoring group and a security source said on Wednesday.

Soleimani "was injured a few days ago" in an offensive in the southwest of Aleppo province, a security source on the ground told AFP.

The head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a Britain-based monitor of the war, also said the general had been hurt in Aleppo.

Reports had circulated on social media for several days claiming the powerful commander was wounded or even killed in Syria, where Iran is backing President Bashar al-Assad against an uprising that began in March 2011.

However, a spokesman for the Revolutionary Guards, Rameza Sharif, denied the reports, saying on Tuesday that Soleimani was "in perfect health and full of energy”.

"He helps the Islamic resistance in Syria and Iraq," Sharif added, according to SepahNews, the official site of the Revolutionary Guards.

China regroups seven military commands into four strategic zones

user posted image

QUOTE
a major restructuring of its military initiated by China, seven military area commands (MAC) have been regrouped into four strategic zones. Of the four, the West Zone shall now face India.  It will be headquartered at Chengdu in Sichuan province.

Till now, the Lanzhou MAC and the Chengdu MAC face India.  Lanzhou MAC is meant for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal and Uttarakhand, while Chengdu is for Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.

The commands have two group armies comprising 75,000 to 1 lakh troops each, tanks, mobile missile launchers, artillery and helicopters. In total more than 3.50 lakh troops are dedicated for India, including fighter squadrons and divisions dedicated for rapid deployment.

QUOTE
The overhaul is aimed at phasing out the Chinese Soviet-style command structures in favour of a more US-style model — an integrated command. On September 3, President Xi had announced to prune 3 lakh troops.

In India the assessment is that it will not give an edge to India. Beijing’s focus will be to prune ‘non-essential’ force, including office staff, while ramping up its air force, navy and strategic missiles.

ISIS on the Brink of Losing Palmyra and Quryatayn

user posted image

QUOTE
Last May, the ancient city of Palmyra (Tadmur) was seized by the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) – three months later, the predominately Syriac Christian town of Qaryatayn – together with dozens of villages in eastern Homs – was captured during an aggressive offensive in early August.

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) was forced to implement a large-scale retreat due to the number of enemy offensives launched around the country; these offensives included the Idlib, Aleppo, Deir Ezzor, and Hama Governorates.

However, with the introduction of Russian airstrikes in late September, the momentum on the battlefield has once again shifted in favor of the government forces.

Subsequently, ISIS fighters have seen their frontlines overstretched, causing significant territorial losses at Al-Hasakah & Sinjar (northern Iraqi Kurdistan) to the Kurds, Tikrit & Baiji to the Iraqi Army and lately, the Kuweiris Airbase to the elite Tiger Forces of the SAA.

Furthermore, in the past weeks, the SAA has been able to recapture the al-Qadri farms, the northern perimeter of the Ancient Quarries of Palmyra, and most significantly the strategic hilltop of Tal SyriaTel which overlooks the western gates of the city.

The government forces have also secured the oil rich Al-Sha’er Gas Fields in the Al-Sha’er Mountains, which are located north of Palmyra and serve as a vital economic boost to the Syrian economy.

Effectively, this leaves government forces a mere 4 kilometers from Palmyra – reportedly within visible distance.

The tribes and civilians living inside of Palmyra have been heavily persecuted by the ISIS Shari’ah Council, who rules this territory with an iron fist; this has forced many Syrians to flee this area for safer quarters.

Kurdish 'Death Squad’ Travel in Bombproof 'Mad Max' Style Machines‏

user posted image

QUOTE
"Necessity has proved the mother of invention," according to London newspaper The Times with members of the so-called 'Death Squad' of the Kurdish militia having constructed two huge Improvised Explosive Device (IED) resistant trucks, "that look like they have been transplanted to northern Iraq from a Mad Max movie," reported The Times.
QUOTE
In their mine-resistant tanks which have taken six months to build out of homemade armor accessorized with twin anti-tank guns, heavy machine guns and mattresses on the inside to cushion any blast, the 'Death Squad' are clearing the deadly path up to Sinjar for the rest of the Peshmerga forces to follow on up.

Armed and ready to sustain any impact from ISIL, the Kurdish militia are making the best of the resources in their possession, as they convert farm machines and trucks into unbelievable 'Mad Max' style machines.

Syrian government army may join anti-IS fight on ground — French foreign minister

user posted image

QUOTE
According to Fabius, to accomplish this mission local armed groups at times fighting on the opposite sides should be involved in the operation. "These should be the forces of the Free Syrian Army, Sunni Arab forces and the forces of the regime (of Bashar al-Assad) — why not?" he said adding yet again that, from the standpoint of Paris, the current Syrian president "cannot be part of this country’s future."

Saving Taiwan's Marine Corps

user posted image

QUOTE
Eliminating a large, vital component of Taiwan’s best ground troops – and the ones best able to operate in the littorals where land and sea come together – was ill-advised. This move undermined both Taiwan’s security and many knowledgeable Americans’ perception of Taiwan’s commitment to its own security.

Taiwan’s government must recognize that a reorganized and re-purposed Taiwan Marine Corps will substantially improve Taiwan’s overall defense capabilities. Moreover, it must recognize that Taiwan making a more serious effort to defend itself – and spending the money to do so – has a deterrent effect on adversaries while also making Taiwan’s friends more willing to assist in the event of trouble.

The Taiwan Marine Corps is a key element of Taiwan’s fragile defense capability, and it needs to be understood and recognized as such. Otherwise, it will be whittled away into irrelevance, leaving a void in Taiwan’s defense framework that its well-armed, well-trained, increasingly assertive chief adversary will deeply appreciate.

The Next Big War Will Be Digital—and We’re Not Ready For It

user posted image

QUOTE
It’s suspected that Russia has launched increasingly sophisticated non-lethal attacks on its neighbours, for example against Estonia, Georgia and Ukraine, which experienced an integrated onslaught of electronic, cyber-attacks and psychological operations.

There is convincing circumstantial evidence that the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan gas pipeline in Georgia was targeted using a sophisticated computer virus which caused an uncontrolled pressure build-up that led to an explosion. Even the so-called Islamic State has shown it has a good understanding of how to use and manipulate social media for use in psychological warfare. IS is reportedly building greater cyberwar and electronic warfare capabilities, as it recognises that winning the information war is key.
QUOTE
The US director of intelligence has emphasised the enormity of the cyber-threat facing the US, while British General Sir Nicholas Houghton in a speech at Chatham House observed that most acts of physical war today incorporate an online aspect, where social networks are exploited to manipulate opinion and perception. He also acknowledged that the tactics employed by Russia combine aspects of information war and also counter-intelligence, espionage, economic warfare and the sponsoring of proxies.

LOGISTICS 101: WHERE DOES ISIS GET ITS GUNS?

user posted image

QUOTE
ISIS’ supply lines run precisely where Syrian and Iraqi air power cannot go. To the north and into NATO-member Turkey, and to the southwest into US allies Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Beyond these borders exists a logistical network that spans a region including both Eastern Europe and North Africa.

Terrorists and weapons left over from NATO’s intervention in Libya in 2011 were promptly sent to Turkey and then onto Syria – coordinated by US State Department officials and intelligence agencies in Benghazi – a terrorist hotbed for decades.
QUOTE
Weapons have also come from Eastern Europe, with the New York Times reporting in 2013 in their article, “Arms Airlift to Syria Rebels Expands, With Aid From C.I.A.,” that:

From offices at secret locations, American intelligence officers have helped the Arab governments shop for weapons, including a large procurement from Croatia, and have vetted rebel commanders and groups to determine who should receive the weapons as they arrive, according to American officials speaking on the condition of anonymity.

And while Western media sources continuously refer to ISIS and other factions operating under the banner of Al Qaeda as “rebels” or “moderates,” it is clear that if billions of dollars in weapons were truly going to “moderates,” they, not ISIS would be dominating the battlefield.
QUOTE
Were these trucks traveling to and from factories in seized ISIS territory deep within Syrian and Iraqi territory? No. They were traveling from deep within Turkey, crossing the Syrian border with absolute impunity, and headed on their way with the implicit protection of nearby Turkish military forces. Attempts by Syria to attack these convoys and the terrorists flowing in with them have been met by Turkish air defenses.
QUOTE
If an army marches on its stomach, and ISIS’ stomachs are full of NATO and Persian Gulf State supplies, ISIS will continue to march long and hard. The key to breaking the back of ISIS, is breaking the back of its supply lines. To do that however, and precisely why the conflict has dragged on for so long, Syria, Iraq, Iran, and others would have to eventually secure the borders and force ISIS to fight within Turkish, Jordanian, and Saudi territory – a difficult scenario to implement as nations like Turkey have created defacto buffer zones within Syrian territory which would require a direct military confrontation with Turkey itself to eliminate.

May the schwartz be with you: New Bavarian police ‘force’ gear draws smiles

user posted image

QUOTE
Bavaria police have received some brand new protective gear that officers will don while managing high-threat security crisis. The uniforms however - particularly the oddly-shaped helmets – have drawn some sarcastic remarks.

The new gear was unveiled this week in Munich by Joachim Herrmann, Germany’s interior minister. The Class-4 protection suits featuring an overcoat with ceramic composite plates and a titanium helmet can stop high-caliber bullets fired by an assault rifle.

user posted image

QUOTE
The design of the helmet is apparently meant to fend off blows targeting the head to padded shoulder pieces, but many Germans noticed that it also made its wearer look like a certain movie villain. Darth Vader from Star Wars, according to some – or his comic counterpart Dark Helmet from the 1987 film Spaceballs, according to others.

China’s Stranglehold On U.S. Defense Tech

user posted image

QUOTE
The F-35 is a flying periodic table. Beryllium fasteners hold the plane together because of the metal’s weight and strength; gallium amplifies the radar’s signal; and tantalum sits in the capacitors needed for the plane’s controls. As Maj. General Robert Latiff (Ret.), a Phd in material science, notes without these materials the military would revert to 1960s or 1970s performance.

The challenge to supply security for rare metals is that they are produced in just a few countries, often just one. And because China dominates the mining and production of more than 40 percent of all critical metals, supply security is a geostrategic concern. What’s more, since rare metal supply lines take more than a decade to build—due to the challenges of financing, permit acquisition and scientific expertise for extracting the metal from the minerals—we cannot just quickly make more in times of need.

The new cutting-edge MiG-31 BM interceptor will join the Russian aerospace force.

The MiG-31 BM will not allow any stealth aircraft, cruise missiles or hypersonic drones to escape. This aircraft is capable of simultaneously striking out six and tracking up to 10 air targets.

The modernization of the MiG-31 BM took place at Nizhny Novgorod’s ‘Sokol’ aviation plant.

The interceptor was installed with sophisticated onboard electronics, radar equipment and a new much more powerful weapon. Test pilots claim that the combat potential of the fighter has been doubled.

Palestinian Resistance Fighters Advance in Rural Damascus as ISIS Comes Under Attack Inside Yarmouk Camp

user posted image

Over the last three weeks in rural Damascus, the Palestine Liberation Army (PLA) and their allies have carried out several military operations inside the dilapidated Yarmouk Camp, Tadamon, and Al-Qadam Districts, targeting the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham’s (ISIS) defensive positions in the southern sector of what is considered the “Palestinian triangle” of the Syrian capital.

On Friday evening in the Yarmouk Camp District, the Palestine Liberation Army – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Yarmouk Camp, Fatah Al-Intifada, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) – continued their powerful assault along Palestine Street, capturing several building blocks from the ISIS and Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) fighters entrenched at Yarmouk-Palestine Camp axis.

Currently, the Palestine Liberation Army and their allies are pressing south towards the Yarmouk Athletic Stadium and the Yarmouk Girls School; these sites were transformed into a training camp (Yarmouk Stadium) and headquarters (Yarmouk Girls School) for new ISIS recruits from southern Damascus and northern Dara’a.

The Yarmouk Camp’s southern sector was captured by ISIS and Jabhat Al-Nusra during their March offensive from the northern axis of Hajar Al-Aswad; this resulted in the complete withdrawal of every rebel group that was operating inside of this district in rural Damascus.

'Large' Chinese military fleet flies near Japan islands: media

user posted image

QUOTE
Japan scrambled jets after 11 Chinese military planes flew near southern Japanese islands during what Beijing said was a drill to improve its long-range combat abilities, reports said Saturday.

The planes -- eight bombers, two intelligence gathering planes and one early-warning aircraft -- flew near Miyako and Okinawa on Friday without violating Japan's airspace, the Japanese defence ministry said in a statement released on Friday.

Some of them flew between the two islands while others made flights close to neighbouring islands, the ministry said.

A Chinese air force spokesman said several types of planes, including H-6K bombers, were involved in Friday's drill over the western Pacific, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

Shen Jinke said such open sea exercises had improved the force's long-distance combat abilities, according to Xinhua.
