Nahh...Iraq is in some disarray now, but its far from a broken-down third world country. They still have air defense capabilities and a few fighter planes to deploy if they really want to block any Russian use of their airspace.

Mexican soldiers should be questioned by expert panel - UN official

MEXICO CITY: Mexican authorities should allow international investigators to interview soldiers who may have witnessed the abduction and apparent massacre of 43 trainee teachers last year, a top United Nations official said on Wednesday.

The disappearance of the students in the southern town of Iguala and subsequent investigation into the attack has drawn sharp criticism of the government of President Enrique Pena Nieto for its inability to solve the case.

During a visit to the country, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said Mexico's top military brass should allow a panel of experts from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to interview soldiers in the Iguala area at the time of the attack.

"It is important that the government acts decisively on the recommendations of the (IACHR panel), including its insistence that authorities reverse their decision to not allow the experts to interview members of the 27th Battalion," said Al Hussein, according to a Spanish-language translation of his remarks.

On Monday, Mexican Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos said he would not permit the panel to interrogate his troops, and rejected any suggestion they may have been involved.

In the months after the incident, the government sought to wrap up its investigation, declaring that a corrupt cadre of local police in cahoots with a drug gang confused the students for a rival gang. The government says they rounded up bodies and burnt them on a pyre in a nearby town.

However, a panel of respected international investigators last month rejected the official account, pointing to suspicions of forced confessions and possible collusion by federal and state security forces, including the army.

China turns firepower to soft power to try to win tiny Taiwan-held island

KINMEN, Taiwan: Soldiers on the tiny Taiwan-held island of Kinmen regularly conduct military drills repelling amphibious attacks by Chinese Communist troops from the mainland, but the problem may soon be free-for-all landings of Chinese shoppers and businessmen.

The war games are a reminder that this place is the front line between China and Taiwan where beaches were mined and shots traded up until as recently as the mid-1970s, and that China has not renounced force to ensure it gains control of a territory it considers its own.

"If China attacks Taiwan, we will be the first to die," said Kinmen bar owner Sam Chen, 29, as he watched recent live-fire drills with fellow residents. "Of course I am worried about war, but I also hope Kinmen can build closer ties with China. It's easier for us young people to make money."

There lies the rub. Many in Taiwan, especially a newly politicised youth movement, are angry about perceived economic dominance by China, likening it to an invasion all of its own. But many also see the benefits of closer trade.

user posted image

Rustic Kinmen, with a population of less than 129,000, is a half-hour ferry ride to China, but it takes an hour to fly to major Taiwan cities. Just off its shores, glass-walled high-rises wink seductively from the booming mainland port of Xiamen in one of China's most prosperous provinces.

Kinmen is eyeing closer commercial ties with China. It wants to pipe water from Xiamen and has plans to build a bridge and set up a glittering free trade zone with the city.

Taiwan's pro-Beijing, Kuomintang-led (KMT) government also hopes greater economic integration will bolster Taiwan's economy. But Taiwan chooses a new president and parliament in January when the KMT is expected to lose to the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which is deeply suspicious of China. Beijing has claimed Taiwan since the KMT fled to the island after losing the civil war against Mao Zedong's Communists in 1949.

"KINMEN CAN DO WHAT TAIWAN DOESN'T DARE DO"

user posted image

China is seeking unification with Taiwan under its "one country, two systems" formula by which Hong Kong, a former British colony, returned to Chinese rule in 1997. And Kinmen, or "Golden Gate", is a test for China's ambitions to recover Taiwan through soft power. If Beijing can't win over tiny Kinmen, what chance does it have to convince the other 23 million on the main island of Taiwan?

Kinmen's growth is supported by Chinese visitors drawn to reminders of war such as weather-beaten pillboxes, the beach defences, bullet holes in buildings and graffiti proclaiming: "Eliminate the Communists".

It is also the site of a brand new, six-storey, duty-free shopping mall, billed as the largest in Asia.

"In Kinmen, we can do what Taiwan can't, what Taiwan doesn't dare do," said Kinmen county chief Chen Fu-hai, who wants water, electricity and natural gas to be pumped from Xiamen.

Chen has a three-year roadmap to build a "special economic zone" in which Kinmen can share Xiamen's economy. The proposal is being promoted by a pro-Beijing, non-profit organization in Taiwan with close ties to the Communist Party. It wants Kinmen to decide on the free trade zone issue by referendum.

But it would still have to get the nod from the central government before a referendum can take place.

user posted image

"As long as it's good for Taiwan's economy and meets the needs of its people, Xiamen will be happy to make it happen," Chinese state media quoted a Xiamen government official saying last year.

The free trade zone is controversial because it would allow unfettered Chinese investment on to Kinmen - something that is strictly controlled in Taiwan as a whole.

"Kinmen residents are really worried about China," said Andy Yang, a KMT politician who supports the free trade zone idea. "But put that aside: do we want better economic development or not?"

Work Re-started on PCU Gagah Samudera

Marhalim Abas October 8, 2015 Malaysia -RMN

SHAH ALAM: REMEMBER PCU Gagah Samudera? After almost a delay of three years, work has restarted to complete the first of two RMN new training ships. The fitting out of the 75-metre ship is being carried out at the Grade One Marine Shipyard Sdn Bhd in Lumut, Perak.

Industry sources told Malaysian Defence that work on Gagah Samudera = pennant number 271 – is expected to be completed by year end and commissioning by early 2016. If indeed Gagah is commissioned in 2016, it will mean that her entry into service is delayed for almost three years. It was supposed to enter service in RMN by mid-2013.

Gagah Samudera was launched on Dec 14, 2012 while her sister ship, Teguh Samudera – pennant number 272 – on Feb 27, 2013. Both were supposed to be commissioned within six months after their launch at the NGV Tech Sdn Bhd yard in Sinjangkang, Selangor.

However, both ships remained incomplete and uncommissioned as NGV Tech was foreclosed by Maybank sometime in 2013. NGV Tech signed the RM294 million contract with RMN for the construction of the training vessels at LIMA 2011.

Malaysian Defence had reported late last year that efforts were underway for the Defence Ministry to take possession of both ships so work on them could be completed. However, it was delayed for some months due to legal issues.

Once those were resolved both Gagah and Teguh were towed to Lumut from their berths, the RMN Hydrography Center in Port Klang and the former NGV Tech yard in Sinjankang, respectively. Gagah had been towed to Port Klang before NGV Tech was foreclosed while Teguh remained at Sinjangkang until recently.

Unfortunately, Teguh will not be completed for the time being as industry sources said only Gagah had been funded for completion and commissioning. It is believed work on Teguh will only start when funds become available, hopefully once Gagah is commissioned.

Gagah Samudera/Teguh Samudera numbers:

Length 76.5 metres
Displacement 1270 ton
Crew 45
Trainees 80
Endurance 21 days
Speed 20 knots
Twin diesel engines
X-band navigation radar
S-band navigation radar
2 RHIB.
1 30mm RWS

Note. I referred this ships as PCU – Pre Commissioning Units as per the US Navy practice – as they have not been commissioned.

Obama just has no balls plain and simple. Margaret Thatcher had loads more balls than him.

What were those fighters Iraq was given earlier this year? F-16s IIRC. Won't do much against all those top tier SUs and MIGs and ships.

Iran very much strongest Russian ally in the region besides Egypt. US lost its influence in Iraq after the fall of Ali al-Maliki. New PM Haider al-Abadi is pretty much Iran's puppet in Iraq.

Nowadays Russia also have been cozying up Jordan and UAE as potential regional partners alongside Egypt. Recently Putin invited them to Moscow for a counter-terrorism conference which unsurprisingly, Saudi Arabia and Qatar declined to attend.

Lockheed Martin ready to provide RI with offsets for F-16V

Novan Iman Santosa, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | World | Thu, October 08 2015, 8:31 AM

US defense giant Lockheed Martin is ready to provide Indonesia with an offset scheme, in which Indonesia would build components, should the country decide to buy the latest variant of the venerable F-16 Fighting Falcon light jet fighter.

The pledge was made by Lockheed’s head of business development for F-16, Randy Howard, during a media event on Wednesday.

He said the company was ready to discuss with Indonesian stakeholders the requirements related to the offset scheme. “We have fulfilled our offset commitment when Indonesia first bought the F-16,” he told journalists.

Indonesia first bought 12 units of F-16 A/B Block 15 OCU aircraft in 1989 with an offset scheme of 35 percent of the total purchase value.

Lockheed presented a cockpit simulator for members of the media to try the latest technologies being installed in the F-16V (Viper).

The US Ambassador to Jakarta Robert O. Blake, Jr. attended the event and said both countries had strong and growing relations, including strong defense ties.

“The US military very much values the growing cooperation with the TNI,” he said.

Blake added that the US was helping Indonesia to modernize its military through training and equipment, including aircraft. “Indonesia has a very long tradition of flying the F-16,” he said, adding that he was proud to have the F-16 V.

The ambassador added that the latest variant of F-16, which no longer has the Block number system, was well suited to Indonesia as it could also track maritime targets.

“The radar can pick up ships and prevent illegal fishing and other incursions,” he said.

Another reason to pick the F-16, Blake said, was because it had 30 percent lower operating costs when compared to its competitors.

Howard said currently there were a number of F-16 operators upgrading their F-16 Block 50/52 into the Viper standard but Indonesia would be the first country to operate brand new F-16Vs if it chose to.

When asked why Lockheed Martin was offering the Viper to Indonesia, Howard said because there was a need to replace older aircraft.

He was referring to Indonesia’s plan to replace the aging, American-made Northrop F-5 E/F Tiger II planes operated by the 14th Squadron, based at the Iswahjudi Air Force Base in Madiun, East Java.

Other than the F-16, another light, single-engine contender is the Swedish-made Saab JAS39 Gripen.

Three other contenders are heavy, dual engine jet fighters: the Eurofighter Typhoon, made by a consortium consisting of Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK; the French-made Dassault Rafale; and the Russian-made Sukhoi Su-35.

Each contender has offered a significant industrial participation scheme to sweeten the deal.

Howard said it would take between 30 and 36 months for first delivery once an agreement was reached.

Alleged ‘Russian cruise missile flyby’ footage published by Kurds (VIDEO)

A video of what is claimed to be Russian cruise missiles flying by has been published by a social media account related to the Iraqi Kurd militia Peshmerga. Russia fired 26 missiles against ISIS targets in Syria from the Caspian Sea on Wednesday.
The clip allegedly shows two cruise missiles as they travel at low speed and altitude. It was not immediately clear exactly where the video was shot. The Russian military reported that the missiles traveled from the Caspian Sea over desolate parts of Iran and Iraq before reaching and successfully hitting their targets. Kurds live in both of these countries, as they do in Syria and Turkey.

The Russian missiles were launched at facilities of the terrorist group Islamic State (formerly ISIS/ISIL) after a week of a bombing campaign that Russia started after a request from the Syrian government. Russian warplanes are providing air support for the Syrian government troops fighting against terrorist forces.

Russia Reportedly Uses Infrared-Guided Smart Bombs Against ISIL in Syria

One of the weapons used in the Russian war against ISIL may be a little-known self-aiming smart bomb known as SPBE, Rossiyskaya Gazeta daily reported on Thursday.

Russia has recently carried out operations destroying ISIL vehicles, in one case as many as 50, and in another instance 20 tanks. This may be evidence that Russia has been deploying the SPBE smart munitions.

user posted image

user posted image

The SPBE is a self-guided bomb that uses infrared guidance and is able to strike tanks and other military equipment with great precision and at the same time a relatively low cost. The bomb was a development from the more advanced and expensive KAB-500Kr guided bomb, which is effective for destroying high-value targets such as bridges and command posts, but less effective for multiple targets such as military equipment.

Images of unexploded SPBE bombs dropped in Syria have also appeared in social networks. The submunitions are similar to the US' BLU-108 submunitions, developed at around the same time as the SBPE and used during the 2003 Iraq War.
The Russian version uses six large large charges to destroy targets while the US version uses 40. Using smaller charges actually created issues for the US as unexploded charges have buried themselves in the ground. The a hazard for both advancing ground forces and civilians, and making it more like a traditional cluster bomb when it comes to impact.

According to specifications, one SPBE-D munition can destroy up to six tanks. It can be dropped from an altitude of 400 to 5,000 meters, then slowed down with parachutes to around 17 meters per second. At an altitude of around 150 meters, the bomb aims at an enemy target and deploys the aimed payload which can penetrate up to 70 millimeters of armor at a 30 degree angle.

Russia has also developed an anti-helicopter mine based on the SBPE, according to Rossiyskaya Gazeta. Installed on the ground, the mine begins to scan the airspace after receiving a signal from a command post. If an enemy helicopter enters its range, the mine detonates, sending the aimed munition at the helicopter.

U.S. Military To Deliver Its First Bulletproof, Weaponized Iron Man Suit In 2018

user posted image

QUOTE
Compared to Iron Man's suit, TALOS is a liquid armor that can solidify when it's hit by a bullet, which is more technologically advanced, but it won't have flying capabilities or a built-in JARVIS, although it has in-helmet technologies that improve visibility and provide better communication with the rest of the troop.

A chemical engineering professor from the University of Delaware Norman Wagner applied nanotechnology to produce this adaptive liquid material.

"These particles organize themselves quickly, locally in a way that they can't flow anymore and they become like a solid," Wagner explained the technology to NPR.

Just like Stark's suit, TALOS is fitted with built-in sensors that monitor the wearer's health, checking conditions from heart rate to body temperature.

Russia has been meeting with Iran leaders over possible Russian air base in Iran for Syrian campaign. Word has it they intend to use it as a transit point for Russian strategic bombers from Russia en route to Syrian airspace.

I rather doubt that will get anywhere. Egypt and Jordan are the US's strongest allies there after Saudi Arabia. Better PR too as they're more moderate compared to Saudi.

My god what century are we living in? Russian Bear back on the rise and fighting proxy wars in desert and Europe. So 80s.

Russian military trucks on Syria-bound ship | News , Middle East | THE DAILY STAR

QUOTE
The photographs, taken by a Turkish blogger who passed them to Reuters, follow a Reuters report that Russia has set up a seaborne lifeline via the Bosphorus to supply its armed forces in Syria and President Bashar Assad’s forces as it steps up its involvement in the conflict.

The photographs come at a sensitive time in relations between Russia and Turkey after two Russian warplanes strayed into Turkish airspace at the weekend, angering Ankara and prompting threats of retaliation.

Reuters reported last month that a Russian ferry called the Alexandr Tkachenko had docked at the Syrian port of Tartous on Sept. 11, where Moscow leases a naval facility, after stopping off to pick up cargo at the Russian port of Novorossiisk.

Its journey was part of a significant uptick in merchant shipping heading for Syria from Russia; it was one of six ships that made their way from Novorossiisk to Syria within two weeks in mid-September.
