US admiral: The Russian military is trying to ‘cripple’ NATO

user posted image

QUOTE
A US admiral has warned that NATO is having difficulty adapting and responding to evolving Russian military threats.

Speaking at the Atlantic Council on Tuesday, US Admiral Mark Ferguson, who is in charge of the Allied Joint Force Command in Naples, Italy, said that Russia is developing military capabilities and hybrid method of war are designed to “cripple” the functional abilities of the NATO alliance, according to a transcript from US Naval Institute news.

Russia’s focus on hybrid and asymmetrical warfare, including its development of cyber and information warfare capabilities, is “designed to cripple the decision-making cycle of the alliance,” Ferguson. “Their capabilities have focused on the creation of ambiguity.”

As an example of Russia’s use of hybrid warfare, Ferguson pointed to how Moscow has used government-sanctioned media and propaganda to create tension throughout Europe.

“Russia exploits ethnic and religious divisions, makes use of an aggressive information campaign, and extensively uses misinformation and deception to delegitimize the forces under attack while confusing the attribution of their actions,” Ferguson said.

The overall goal of this disunion is to undermine NATO’s structural integrity and decision-making capabilities. At the same time, Russia is “centralizing their national and military decision-making.”

“We are seeing more frequent snap exercises focused on rapid mobilization and movement directed by central headquarters, to include their naval forces, where we have seen large numbers of ships get underway with little or no notice,” Ferguson said.

Alleged ‘Russian cruise missile flyby’ footage published by Kurds (VIDEO)

A video of what is claimed to be Russian cruise missiles flying by has been published by a social media account related to the Iraqi Kurd militia Peshmerga. Russia fired 26 missiles against ISIS targets in Syria from the Caspian Sea on Wednesday.
The clip allegedly shows two cruise missiles as they travel at low speed and altitude. It was not immediately clear exactly where the video was shot. The Russian military reported that the missiles traveled from the Caspian Sea over desolate parts of Iran and Iraq before reaching and successfully hitting their targets. Kurds live in both of these countries, as they do in Syria and Turkey.

The Russian missiles were launched at facilities of the terrorist group Islamic State (formerly ISIS/ISIL) after a week of a bombing campaign that Russia started after a request from the Syrian government. Russian warplanes are providing air support for the Syrian government troops fighting against terrorist forces.

Russia Reportedly Uses Infrared-Guided Smart Bombs Against ISIL in Syria

One of the weapons used in the Russian war against ISIL may be a little-known self-aiming smart bomb known as SPBE, Rossiyskaya Gazeta daily reported on Thursday.

Russia has recently carried out operations destroying ISIL vehicles, in one case as many as 50, and in another instance 20 tanks. This may be evidence that Russia has been deploying the SPBE smart munitions.

user posted image

user posted image

The SPBE is a self-guided bomb that uses infrared guidance and is able to strike tanks and other military equipment with great precision and at the same time a relatively low cost. The bomb was a development from the more advanced and expensive KAB-500Kr guided bomb, which is effective for destroying high-value targets such as bridges and command posts, but less effective for multiple targets such as military equipment.

Images of unexploded SPBE bombs dropped in Syria have also appeared in social networks. The submunitions are similar to the US' BLU-108 submunitions, developed at around the same time as the SBPE and used during the 2003 Iraq War.
The Russian version uses six large large charges to destroy targets while the US version uses 40. Using smaller charges actually created issues for the US as unexploded charges have buried themselves in the ground. The a hazard for both advancing ground forces and civilians, and making it more like a traditional cluster bomb when it comes to impact.

According to specifications, one SPBE-D munition can destroy up to six tanks. It can be dropped from an altitude of 400 to 5,000 meters, then slowed down with parachutes to around 17 meters per second. At an altitude of around 150 meters, the bomb aims at an enemy target and deploys the aimed payload which can penetrate up to 70 millimeters of armor at a 30 degree angle.

Russia has also developed an anti-helicopter mine based on the SBPE, according to Rossiyskaya Gazeta. Installed on the ground, the mine begins to scan the airspace after receiving a signal from a command post. If an enemy helicopter enters its range, the mine detonates, sending the aimed munition at the helicopter.

U.S. Military To Deliver Its First Bulletproof, Weaponized Iron Man Suit In 2018

user posted image

QUOTE
Compared to Iron Man's suit, TALOS is a liquid armor that can solidify when it's hit by a bullet, which is more technologically advanced, but it won't have flying capabilities or a built-in JARVIS, although it has in-helmet technologies that improve visibility and provide better communication with the rest of the troop.

A chemical engineering professor from the University of Delaware Norman Wagner applied nanotechnology to produce this adaptive liquid material.

"These particles organize themselves quickly, locally in a way that they can't flow anymore and they become like a solid," Wagner explained the technology to NPR.

Just like Stark's suit, TALOS is fitted with built-in sensors that monitor the wearer's health, checking conditions from heart rate to body temperature.

Russian military trucks on Syria-bound ship | News , Middle East | THE DAILY STAR

QUOTE
The photographs, taken by a Turkish blogger who passed them to Reuters, follow a Reuters report that Russia has set up a seaborne lifeline via the Bosphorus to supply its armed forces in Syria and President Bashar Assad’s forces as it steps up its involvement in the conflict.

The photographs come at a sensitive time in relations between Russia and Turkey after two Russian warplanes strayed into Turkish airspace at the weekend, angering Ankara and prompting threats of retaliation.

Reuters reported last month that a Russian ferry called the Alexandr Tkachenko had docked at the Syrian port of Tartous on Sept. 11, where Moscow leases a naval facility, after stopping off to pick up cargo at the Russian port of Novorossiisk.

Its journey was part of a significant uptick in merchant shipping heading for Syria from Russia; it was one of six ships that made their way from Novorossiisk to Syria within two weeks in mid-September.

Alcoa Wins Titanium Contract with Lockheed Martin for F-35 Joint Strike Fighter

user posted image

QUOTE
The titanium will be used to manufacture airframe structures for all three F-35 JSF variants: The F-35A Conventional Takeoff and Landing (CTOL) aircraft, the F-35B Short Takeoff/Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft and the F-35C Carrier Variant (CV). Under a different existing contract, Alcoa will use the metal to forge all of the largest titanium bulkheads—the “backbone” of the aircraft structure—for the CTOL variant at its Cleveland, Ohio operations. Approximately 75 percent of all F-35s produced are CTOLs.

Navy to challenge Chinese claims in South China Sea

user posted image

QUOTE
The Navy is preparing to send a ship inside the 12-mile territorial limit China claims for its man-made island chain in the South China Sea, according to military officials.

The action could take place within days but awaits final approval from the Obama administration, the officials told Navy Times.

Plans to send a warship through the contested space in the vicinity of the Spratly Islands have been rumored since May, but three Pentagon officials who spoke to Navy Times on background to discuss future operations say Navy officials believe approval of the mission is imminent.

If approved, it would be the first time since 2012 that the Navy has directly challenged China's claims to the islands' territorial limits.

Indonesia mulls drones in response to China’s maritime flexing

user posted image

QUOTE
NEW YORK — Indonesia is considering using drones and submarines to strengthen its grip over the gas-rich waters around the Natuna Islands in response to China’s growing military presence in the South China Sea.

These comments by Indonesia’s security chief Luhut Panjaitan in an opinion piece yesterday (Oct 7) in the Kompas newspaper represent some of the most direct yet by the nation over China’s claims in the water. They highlight unease in the government even as it maintains it is not a party to regional disputes over the waters.

China to build four submarines in Karachi

user posted image

QUOTE
Tailor-made to meet Pakistan's war hostilities with arch rival India, the Type 41 submarine is being fitted with Air-Independent Propulsion system (AIP), and would also be equipped with Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) capabilities. This crucial technological element would be especially useful in case of an Indian blockade of Pakistan’s coast and could give New Delhi grounds to pause before deploying its planned new aircraft carrier-the INS Vikrant. Notably, AIP adds stealth by reducing the noise dissipated during a submarine's displacement below the ocean surface.

Taking Names, Kicking Ass: Spy Planes, Ships Help Russian Forces Smash ISIL

According to TNI, "while Moscow has not identified its [mobile] reconnaissance platforms, pictures of [a] Russian Il-20M Coot flying over the battlefield have popped up on social media."

"Based on the Ilyushin Il-18 turboprop airliner, these four-engined planes are rough equivalents to the US Air Force's family of RC-135 aerial spies," TNI explains.

TNI cites journalist and military aviation blogger David Cenciotti, who reported on the plane and its capabilities last month, citing a source which suggested that at least one Il-20M had "already arrived in Syria to reinforce the Russian contingent."

"The Il-20 is an ELINT (Electronic Intelligence) platform," Cenciotti explained. "It is equipped with a wide array of antennas, AR (Infrared) and Optical sensors, a SLAR (Side-Looking Airborne Radar) and satellite communications equipment for real-time data sharing. The aircraft," according to the expert, "is the Russian Air Force's premiere spyplane."

According to Cenciotti, the Coot will be used to "perform intelligence gathering missions, eavesdropping into IS militants communications, detecting their systems' emissions to build an Electronic Order of Battle of ISIS in the region, and pinpointing their positions."

Proof please? CNN claims Russian missiles crashed in Iran, Moscow refutes, US can’t confirm

QUOTE
This triggered a quick reaction from the Russian Defense Ministry, with spokesman Igor Konashenkov saying that all the missiles had hit their targets on Wednesday. “Unlike CNN, we don’t distribute information citing anonymous sources, but show the very missile launches and the way they hit their targets almost in real time,” Konashenkov said. The spokesman pointed out that the strike targets are being photographed before and after being hit, while Russian drones are monitoring the situation from Syrian skies 24/7.

The high precision strikes might have been “unpleasant and surprising for our colleagues in the Pentagon,” but the fact is that “the missiles launched from the ships hit their targets,” he said.
“Otherwise one would have to acknowledge that IS facilities – located at a considerable distance from each other – exploded all by themselves,” Konashenkov said.

How Syria is becoming a test bed for high-tech weapons of electronic warfare

user posted image

QUOTE
The Krasukha-4 is a broad-band multifunctional jamming system designed to neutralise Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) spy satellites such as the US Lacrosse/Onyx series, airborne surveillance radars and radar-guided ordinance at ranges between 150km to 300km. The system is reported to be able to cause damage to the enemy’s EW systems and communications. The Krasukha-4 system works by creating powerful jamming at the fundamental radar frequencies and other radio-emitting sources.

Lt General Hodges, the commander of US Army Forces Europe, commented that Russia had demonstrated a high level of offensive EW proficiency against Ukrainian forces in Donbas using a first foreign deployment of the Krasukha-4 system.

QUOTE
So how can the Krasukha-4 be used to cloak Russia’s operations in Syria? In words – partially effectively. Its surveillance systems will not only be able to monitor NATO aircraft movement over Syria but also the types, and from its intelligence it will know the frequencies used and signal characteristics present – Lacrosse satellites and AWACS operate in S-band, Sentinel (and similar) in X-band, and drones in J-band. Lacrosse/Onyx satellite positions are continually tracked by Russia. With this intelligence detail the Krasukha-4 can be programmed to engage in order to deny or disrupt NATO intelligence gathering.

QUOTE
But it is not all one way – US and NATO intelligence gatherers will have “electronic counter counter measures” (ECCM) to combat Russian EW interference – and so the cat and mouse game of the Cold War is repeated. Intelligence gathering and radar-guided munitions will suffer some disruption and mistakes may be made but operations will continue.

ECCM may include being frequency agile and dodging the jamming signal or pointing the receive antenna away slightly from the jamming source. There are also many tricks that can be played with signal processing that will mitigate the effects of jamming. Of course, it would also be possible for NATO to jam the Russian surveillance radar, denying them of identification and positioning of NATO aircraft – but this would really ramp up the war of words with Vladimir Putin. We must also accept that the Krasukha-4 EW system is an essential part of the defence of Russian forces at the Latakia airfield in Syria and this must not be denied them.

Syria Rebels Repel Ground Assault, Call for US Help

user posted image

QUOTE
Some militia commanders reported on social media sites Wednesday night that they had destroyed 25 tanks and captured two T-72 tanks. But Tu’mah puts the number lower, saying, “At least 10 tanks were destroyed.” Even so, he characterized the toll as “a serious loss for the regime.”

“If we had more TOW anti-tank missiles we could do more,” he added.

The relief on the faces of fighters from the FSA’s 101st and 13th Divisions in video and still photographs posted on social media after their daylong clashes with Syrian regulars paid testimony to the setback they feel they have dealt to Syrian government forces. Both divisions were among the first to receive U.S.-made BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missiles. But commanders say supplies have been coming in dribs and drabs, and in numbers insufficient for their battlefield needs.

Russian Military to Complete Testing on KAB-250 Guided Bombs This Year

user posted image

"The bomb is in trials on the Sukhoi Su-34 [Russian fighter jet], with the trials to be completed late this year," Region's director general, Igor Krylov, told IHS Jane's at the Russian Defense Ministry Innovation Day.

There are two versions of the 250-kilogram KAB: a laser-guided version and a satellite-guided version.

The KAB-250 follows the larger KAB-500, which made its combat debut in September when the Russian military began launching airstrikes in Syria.

The KAB-250 will enter the weapons suite of the PAK FA fifth-generation fighter next year. It can be mounted externally or stored in the jet’s internal weapons bays.

According to Krylov, the KAB-250 was developed in response to the Small Diameter Bomb, which the United States developed for its F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II fifth-generation fighters, IHS Jane's reports.

The KAB-250 has a fragmentation warhead designed to destroy lightly vulnerable materiel, thin-skinned vehicles, and other enemy installations. The bomb can be dropped individually or in salvoes. The aircraft carrying the KAB-250LG-Es must be fitted with a laser illumination system or the target can be illuminated by a forward air controller, according to IHS Jane's

The KAB-250 weighs a total of 565 pounds, with a warhead of 365 pounds and a 200-pound explosive.

The bomb is 10.5 feet long. It has a complex, compact tail design and is fitted with four long-chord, short-span wings to increase its glide range. It falls from an aircraft at a rate of 655-1,150 feet per second.

Iran loses top commander helping Assad in Syria

user posted image

QUOTE
Iran said Friday that one of its senior military officers, Quds Force commander Gen. Hossein Hamedani, was killed in Syria. He was officially in the country as an advisor to Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces, but was also reportedly commanding Iranian troops fighting alongside the Syrian regime in the war against rebel groups.

Officials said earlier this week that it was senior Iranian military officials who worked with Moscow to plot a course in Syria to keep Assad in power, convincing the Russians to dramatically increase their involvement in the grinding four-plus-year conflict which has already claimed more than a quarter of a million lives.

Iranian state television reported Hamedani was killed in the suburbs of Aleppo, in northern Syria, while "carrying out an advisory mission," but didn't provide any further details.

In Syria, the Loyalist Offensive Begins

user posted image

QUOTE
The rebels are at a disadvantage in the fight because they lack air defense weaponry. They also have few means with which to counter Russian or loyalist rocket and artillery fire. However, the rebels can continue to heavily rely on their anti-tank guided missiles and defensive acumen to slow down the loyalist forces in a battle of attrition. The rebels are also expecting further shipments of weapons and equipment from their foreign patrons, especially Turkey and the Gulf Arab states, and they may receive man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) that would prove useful against low-flying aircraft and helicopters.

One of the most interesting aspects of the conflict is Russia's weaponry. From Oct. 5-6, four vessels of the Russian Caspian Flotilla fired 26 land attack cruise missiles — 3M-14 Kalibr missiles, codenamed "Sizzler" by NATO, to be exact. It was Russia's first use of land attack cruise missiles fired from the sea in an active operational setting. Since Russian aircraft could have just as easily struck many of the targeted areas with less expense, the use of the land attack missiles was likely meant, at least in part, to be a symbolic demonstration of force to showcase Russia's military capabilities. Because the missiles traversed Iranian and Iraqi airspace, with their permission, before striking their targets in Syria, the attack also emphasizes the positive relationship Russia has established with some of Syria's neighbors.

QUOTE
At the same time, both Iran and Hezbollah reportedly are sending forces to northern Syria; Iran alone has deployed at least a few hundred troops, and Stratfor sources indicate their ranks will eventually reach some 2,000 personnel.

As Russia and Iran mobilize in support of the al Assad government, Turkey, Jordan, Gulf Arab states and the United States are preparing to bolster the Syrian rebels with further supplies of weaponry and equipment. Most notably, the United States has backed a new push against the Islamic State in Syria that aims to secure the remaining Islamic State-occupied areas on the Syria-Turkey border while threatening the group's de facto capital, Raqqa. Washington insists that these plans have been in the works since before Russia's latest intervention in Syria, but it is clear that Moscow's activities will only provide additional impetus for the U.S.-backed rebel offensive.

The rebel attack on Raqqa will rely heavily on the 20,000-strong Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in northeastern Syria and on the 5,000 Syrian Arab fighters in the area, including those in the Euphrates Volcano group who have long fought alongside the Kurds against the Islamic State. By boosting its supplies to (and its support for) the Kurdish factions and their Arab allies, the United States risks alienating Turkey, which views the YPG with considerable animosity and suspicion. However, Ankara will be pleased with the second phase of the rebel offensive, which entails a combined U.S. and Turkish effort to back and supply a Syrian rebel push against the Islamic State's remaining positions on the Turkish border. While this part of the strategy has been planned for a long time, its execution is drawing near as the United States and Turkey finalize the details and recover from setbacks relating to the failure of the New Syrian Forces program.

Russian airstrikes kill 2 ISIS commanders, 300 militants – Defense Ministry

user posted image

Russian air forces carried out 67 sorties, striking 60 separate targets in northern Syria in the past 24 hours, the Defense Ministry has reported. Two senior Islamic State field commanders are reportedly among some 300 militants killed in the strikes.

“Among the targets are the communication hubs, command posts, fuel stores and terrorist training bases located located in Raqqa, Latakia, Idlip, Aleppo and Hama,” said deputy chief of staff Lieutenant-General Igor Makushev, in a Moscow media briefing.

Makushev said that drone footage verified that a precision hit destroyed the headquarters of Liwa-al-Haqq, an Islamist group, which has been fighting the government of Bashar Assad since 2012. Russia said that a radio intercept confirmed the deaths of 200 fighters, and two commanders, who Makushev said belonged to Islamic State.

Another 100 Islamists were killed in an airstrike near Aleppo, in which Russian Sukhoi jets destroyed a base and armaments store housed in a former prison.

In total the airstrikes destroyed six communication hubs, six armories, 17 training bases and 17 armored vehicles, the Russian official said.

“The militants are sustaining significant losses from the airstrikes, and are having to adjust their tactics, spreading out over a wider area, concealing themselves more thoroughly, or hiding in urban settlements,” Makushev said.

“In these conditions, the Russian air forces are continuing and intensifying their airstrikes.”
