Iran troops to join Syria war, Russia bombs group trained by CIA

user posted image

QUOTE
Two Lebanese sources told Reuters hundreds of Iranian troops had reached Syria in the past 10 days with weapons to mount a major ground offensive. They would also be backed by Assad’s Lebanese Hezbollah allies and by Shi’ite militia fighters from Iraq, while Russia would provide air support.

“The vanguard of Iranian ground forces began arriving in Syria –soldiers and officers specifically to participate in this battle. They are not advisers … we mean hundreds with equipment and weapons. They will be followed by more,” one of the sources said.

Let's All Take a Nice Deep Breath Over Russia's Airstrikes in Syria

user posted image

QUOTE
Do you know how many military bases the US has in the Middle East? Nearly two dozen. Plus the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean and the Fifth Fleet in the Persian Gulf. Plus a whole bunch of close allies. And we're supposed to be quaking in our boots because Putin hastily upgraded a single aging base in Latakia under pressure from his sole remaining ally? You're kidding, right?

UK's £1.2bn bill for drone that's seen 146 hours of active duty

user posted image

QUOTE
Unlike other drone models such as Reaper, which operate by satellite, Watchkeeper is piloted by radio signals and requires troops on the ground in order to function. A defence spokesman explained that this allows it to be used more directly by commanders to survey the battlefield.

Watchkeeper has not been used in the RAF-led air missions in Libya and Iraq, or in Syria, where Reapers are providing a third of all surveillance flights to the US-led coalition.

Commenting on the remotely piloted aircraft’s reliance on radio, Chris Woods, the author of Sudden Justice, a book on drones, said: “The problem with Watchkeeper is it’s yesterday’s technology pretending to be tomorrow’s.”

Woods also pointed to the fact that they had not been used in the UK’s most recent operations abroad. “The government is spending £1.2bn on an asset that is not being used in the kinds of aerial-led wars we’re now fighting.”

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has admitted that even hitting the 2017 target to be fully operational “will require considerable further development”. Another problem is the lack of trained pilots: currently the army only has six, but it expects this to rise to 100 when the drone is fully operational.

Remote-Controlled Weapon Towers Could Be The Future Of Military Base Security

user posted image

The Army is currently testing remote-controlled weapon towers dotted along the perimeter of a base at Fort Bliss, Texas, in an effort to utilize soldiers’ time better and keep them safer.

Known as Tower Hawk Systems, the revolutionary security technology lets soldiers control weapon towers via remote control, all while safely protected behind the walls of the military base, Fox News reported.

Currently, between four to six military personnel are required to man security towers at military bases, according to Gizmag. But this duty just might become a thing of the past.

“Every soldier I have assigned to securing the perimeter is one I don’t have that can execute support missions,” Lt. Col. Raphael Heflin told Fox News. (RELATED: Cutting-Edge Robotic Dog Sent To Marine Corps For Basic Training)

Fort Bliss is testing towers mounted with Browning M-250-caliber machine guns and 338 Lapua sniper rifles, but according to reports, almost any type of gun can be mounted and controlled remotely.

Software called Joint All Hazard Command Control System allows soldiers to move the weapons up, down and in 360-degree circles from the tactical operations center within the base. What’s even cooler is the software can allegedly pick out enemies without help from the soldiers manning the system, and will track the combatants until directed to take further action.

Instead of four to six men physically manning the perimeter, this new system only needs two military personnel. These two soldiers virtually man the center behind two massive computer screens streaming normal, thermal, and infrared vision scanning the perimeter, and use controls just like the ones for gaming consoles — giving soldiers a user-friendly familiarity.

The U.S. Army is currently in the throes of testing a slew of cutting-edge tech — including the towers — in a program called Network Integration Evaluation 16.1. From Sept. 25 to Oct. 8, 9,000 military members will be testing tech, software and more efficient energy systems, in the hopes of utilizing some or all of the gadgets.

Russian Air Force decimating terrorist command centers, bunkers, camps, workshops – Defense Ministry

user posted image

QUOTE
“A bunker-busting BETAB-500 air bomb dropped from a Sukhoi Su-34 bomber near Raqqa has eliminated the command post of one of the terror groups, together with an underground storage facility for explosives and munitions,” the spokesman said.

Commenting on the video filmed by a Russian UAV monitoring the assault near Raqqa, Konashenkov noted, “a powerful explosion inside the bunker indicates it was also used for storing a large quantity of munitions.

“As you can see, a direct hit on the installation resulted in the detonation of explosives and multiple fires. It was completely demolished,” the spokesman said.

PressTV-Iran unveils submersible military craft

user posted image

Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy has unveiled a torpedo-armed watercraft which is capable of operating both on and under water.

The domestically-manufactured submersible watercraft, dubbed Zolfaqar, was showcased for the first time at a public exhibition on Saturday, Fars news agency reports.

The 17-meter-long military equipment weighs about 22 tonnes and has a speed of 40 knots (more than 70 kilometers) per hour on the sea surface.

In recent years, Iran has made major breakthroughs in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing important military equipment and systems.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly assured other nations, particularly its neighbors, that its military might poses no threat to other countries, insisting that its defense doctrine is merely based on deterrence.

Additional 380 UN peacekeepers to undergo training in Port Dickson

user posted image

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has expressed his ministry’s full commitment for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s pledge to support United Nations (UN) peacekeeping operations.

He said there were currently 920 personnel from the Malaysian Armed Forces in missions abroad.

The additional personnel promised by Najib would further help countries that were in conflict.

Najib last week announced the deployment of 380 additional police personnel to the UN peacekeeping mission who would serve as part of the Formed Police Units and the United Nations Police.

He made the announcement when speaking at the UN Peacekeeping Summit.

Hishammuddin said that these additional personnel would undergo the necessary training needed at the Malaysian Peacekeeping Centre (MPC) in Port Dickson, which has trained many officers to date.

“The additional deployment of our troops is a sign of Malaysia’s commitment as a member of the United Nations to help countries torn by conflict to create the conditions for lasting peace.

“The MPC in Port Dickson provides armed forces personnel, together with police, civil departments and non-governmental organisations, with training and knowledge to enable them to function in peacekeeping operations, preparing them for operational duties in peacekeeping operations.

“The centre, which has trained 1,931 local officers and 612 international participants from 52 countries, is testament to Malaysia’s continuous commitment towards global peace, which is the cornerstone to our National Defence Policy,” he said in a statement today.

Hishammuddin also expressed excitement over the recognition received for Malaysia’s efforts in adopting the concept paper on Asean Militaries Ready Group on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief.

He said the Ready Group would serve as a force that comprised of specialists in disaster relief and military medicine from all Asean countries grouped under a single banner.

“This force would be trained together, develop common procedures and interoperability.

“In the event of a calamity, upon request by the host country, this force would be immediately despatched, taking the lead from a coordination centre.”

Aboard U.S. nuclear sub, a cat-and-mouse game with phantom Chinese foes

user posted image

QUOTE
America’s most advanced nuclear submarine was slicing through the water off Hawaii last month, 400 feet under the surface, when a sonar operator suddenly detected an ominous noise on his headphones.

It was a faint thump … thump … thump – the distinctive sound of a spinning, seven-bladed propeller on a Chinese attack submarine called a Shang by the Pentagon and its allies.

A neon green stripe on his sonar screen indicated that the Shang was only a few thousand yards off the U.S. sub’s bow.

“Sonar contact!” he yelled to 15 officers and crew in the dimly lighted control room. “All stations, analyze!”

Within seconds, the 377-foot-long Mississippi banked right and gunned its nuclear-powered propulsion system for one of the Navy’s most difficult maneuvers: sneaking up behind another submarine and shadowing it without being detected.

Fortunately, the Mississippi was chasing a phantom, not a real Chinese sub. A digital recording of a Shang’s audio signature had been piped through the U.S. sub’s sonar system for a training exercise.

But the battle drill seemed urgently real: The mock Shang’s course and speed were automatically fed into the Mississippi’s targeting computers, the first step to launching one of its 27 torpedoes, something no U.S. sub has done against an adversary since World War II.

Flying IEDs: The Next Evolution in Warfare?

user posted image

QUOTE
Martinez said even a small drone such as the quadcopter that landed near the White House poses a high potential threat level. “Imagine the media event if it lands on top of the White House and detonates, whether it kills anyone or not,” Martinez said. Martinez emphasized that the seemingly harmless light vehicles could carry a payload of up to six pounds of C4 plastic explosive or multiple fragmentation grenades, giving them the ability to do considerable damage for a small platform. Such an attack could provide a propaganda coup for a terrorist organization by instilling uneasiness in the civilian population even if it inflicted no human casualties.

There is significant concern within the defense community that forces unfriendly to the United States can easily acquire these types of flying vehicles. The small drones are readily available and it is highly probable that existing technology would allow unfriendly forces to retrofit them, giving the aircraft the ability to deliver weaponized explosives or hazardous materials.

End of ISIS? Putin 'sending 150,000 soldiers to Syria to WIPE OUT evil Islamic State'

user posted image

QUOTE
The Russian leader is reportedly mounting an enormous military mission to take control of the terror group's stronghold of Raqqa.

The city is the self-declared capital of ISIS in Syria and is patrolled by as many as 5,000 jihadi members.

Putin is set to mobilise 150,000 reservists who he conscripted into the military earlier this week.

This is fast becoming a race to Raqqa

An insider revealed: "It is very clear that Russia wants to sweep up the west of the country, taking Raqqa and all the oil and gas resources around Palmyra.

"This is fast becoming a race to Raqqa – to secure the oil fields they need to cleanse the region of insurgents, and the IS capital is vital to do that."

It comes a day after Russian jets obliterated nine ISIS outposts in just 24 hours using bunker-busting bombs.

Moscow scuppers US coalition plans for no-fly zone in Syria

user posted image

QUOTE
Russia’s ministry of defence announced on Friday the deployment of its navy cruiser the Moskva to Latakia. The Moskva is armed with a complement of 64 S-300 ship-to-air missiles, Russia’s most powerful anti-aircraft weapon.

Deployment of S-300s — or other similarly sophisticated systems, also known as triple-digit Sams — has long been one of the Pentagon’s biggest fears in the Middle East. The S-300 system, which has an operating range of 150km, is capable of striking down all but the most sophisticated stealth aircraft. It means most missions flown by Washington’s coalition allies — Jordan, for example, uses F-16 jets — are now highly vulnerable. Even the UK’s deployment of Tornados and Typhoons at the Royal Air Force’s base at Akrotiri, Cyprus, is threatened by the missiles.

“The Russian forces now in place make it very, very obvious that any kind of no-fly zone on the Libyan model imposed by the US and allies is now impossible, unless the coalition is actually willing to shoot down Russian aircraft,” says Justin Bronk, research analyst at the Royal United Services Institute.

Huge submarine deployment: North Korea plays a dangerous game with latest military tactic - Nikkei Asian Review

user posted image

QUOTE
Huge mobilization

The large submarine deployment by the North is a tactic known as a saturation attack, in which the attacking side mobilizes a huge amount of military force at once to overwhelm its opponent.

For example, if the Chinese military were to engage in a full-scale faceoff against Japanese and U.S. forces, Beijing is ready to launch a large number of missiles to attack targets in Japan and the U.S., which would be too many for the Japan-U.S. missile defense system to shoot down. To respond to this risk, the U.S. military has started to shift some of its forces from Japan to other places, such as Guam, Hawaii and Australia, in recent years.

Moreover, China is putting in place a system for a saturation attack in the air.

In recent years, the U.S. military has deployed several 5th-generation F-22 stealth fighter jets in Japan and Europe based on how tense the situation becomes in each of these two regions. In addition, Washington is moving to deploy multirole F-35 stealth fighters.

To counter these moves, the Chinese military has deployed more than 700 4th-generation fighter jets across the country. If a contingency arises, Beijing has shown its readiness to send an overwhelming number of 4th-generation fighters that U.S. stealth jets would not be able to shoot down with air-to-air missiles. F-22s are equipped with up to eight missiles per aircraft.

No matter how sophisticated the U.S. stealth fighters are, they become vulnerable once they have fired all their air-to-air missiles.

As such, a saturation attack is a tactic by which the technologically weaker side tries to overwhelm its opponent by deploying a large amount of military force. North Korea's mass submarine deployment is similar to this Chinese tactic.

China's GF-4 satellite can be used to monitor US carriers

user posted image

China will be ready to launch the Gaofen-4 satellite into space, which will be capable of tracking down every single US aircraft carrier around the globe, before the end of 2015, reports the China Youth Daily.

During the Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1996, in which China fired missile tests in the Taiwan Strait and drew the response of the US Navy, the PLA realized that its mission to "liberate" Taiwan could never work without defeating US aircraft carriers.

Since then, China has spent nearly 20 years preparing for confrontation with a US aircraft carrier. In addition to purchasing Sovremenny-class destroyers, Kilo-class submarines as well as Su-30 fighter bombers from Russia, the PLA developed new types of anti-ship ballistic missiles, such as the DF-21D and DF-26, to destroy large American warships in battle. Both missiles were demonstrated to the public for the first time during the military parade held on Sept. 3 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of V-J Day.

It is also important for the PLA to ensure the accuracy of its missiles. This is the reason why advanced satellite systems like Gaofen-4, also known as GF-4, are being launched into space, both to monitor the movement of US aircraft carriers and provide precise targeting for missile strikes. The satellite is equipped with a visible light and infrared staring optical imager and was launched into orbit by a Changzheng-3B rocket from the Xichang space center located in southwestern China.

Hawkei: Army to spend $1.3 billion on Australian-made replacement for ageing Land Rover fleet

user posted image

QUOTE
The Federal Government has announced it will spend $1.3 billion on new light armoured personnel carriers for the Army.

The Hawkei vehicles will be manufactured by Thales Australia, which also makes the Bushmaster armoured personnel carrier, in Bendigo.

They will replace part of the Army's ageing Land Rover fleet.

The Australian Army will order 1,100 Hawkeis, which are classed as "light protected mobility vehicles".

Equipped with a V-shaped hull which Thales says will help deflect IED blasts, the vehicles can be armed with weapons including heavy machine guns and grenade launchers, and is light enough to be carried by a Chinook helicopter.

Russian Warplanes Destroy ISIL Base in Syria's Idlib

user posted image

QUOTE
The Russian Air Force has carried out airstrikes in Syria's Homs province against three Islamic State facilities and destroyed two weapons depots, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Gen.-Maj. Igor Konashenkov said Monday.

"Two terrorist arms depots were destroyed by Su-34 [Fullback fighter bombers] and Su-24 [Fencer attack aircraft]. The depots caught on fire after the strikes, destroying the facilities," Konashenkov told journalists.

In a forest area near Idlib, a hidden terrorist base was detected, the Defense Ministry spokesman said. There were about 30 automobile and armoured vehicles including T-55 tanks seized from the Syrian army earlier.

Smart missiles and bombs Russia uses to take out ISIS in Syria (PHOTOS)

user posted image

Russia’s smart weapon inventory used in Syria is a choice of time-proven bombs and missiles equipped with state-of-the-art system guidance. Precision weapons are used from high altitudes to exclude encounters with portable air-defense systems.

Russian precision bombs use the GLONASS navigation system to home in on targets, while missiles are expertly guided by the weapon system operator.

A trusty weapon in the surgical strikes being carried out in Syria is the KAB guided bomb, which has two variants: KAB-250 and KAB-500.

user posted image

The KAB-250 guided bomb was developed in the 2000s specifically for the 5G PAK-FA fighter jet, where it is mounted in inside bays, which explains its distinctive egg-shaped form.

user posted image

The bomb can also be used by other modern Russian fighter jets, such as the Sukhoi Su-34 bomber, which drops these weapons on Islamic State targets in Syria from an altitude of 5,000 meters.

user posted image

Laser-guided missiles in Syria differ in ammunition power and are reportedly laser guided versions of the Kh-25L and Kh-29L.

user posted image

Sukhoi Su-24 and Su-25 ground-support fighters also use non-guided air bombs. A sophisticated targeting system allows pilots to plant bombs with lethal accuracy.

Islamic State command centers are multilevel underground bunkers made of reinforced concrete, so it takes a special bunker-busting BETAB-500 air bomb to knock them out. Once a concrete-piercing BETAB-500 accelerated by its jet booster breaks in and explodes, any underground installation is completely destroyed.

user posted image

Fragmentation demolition OFAB-250 air bombs have also been spotted under the wings of Sukhoi fighter jets at the Khmeimim airbase. These munitions are used to eliminate unprotected targets, such terrorist training camps and arms depots.
