Despite assurance by the police that the crime rate had declined in Bandar Sri Sendayan in Seremban, Negri Sembilan, many residents are still living in fear of robbers breaking into their homes when they are at work.
However, a move to hire security guards to patrol the residential area had failed to garner the support of residents.
A resident from Taman Nusari Bayu 2, who only wanted to be known as Mohd Tariq, said his home was broken into on May 5 when he and his wife were at work.
Following the incident, he initiated a poll, urging residents in the area to jointly hire security guards to patrol the residential area round the clock.
However, he said hardly 15 residents responded and supported the idea.
“It is disappointing that residents do not care much about such an initiative,” he added.
In November last year, two houses in the same residential area were broken into between 8am and 11am.
Prior to that, it was understood that in 2010 a number of houses in the residential area were targeted.
Meanwhile, Seremban police chief ACP Muhammad Zaki Harun said the number of house break-in cases had seen a decline with efforts carried out by the authorities, cooperation with relevant agencies and community activities.
“A total of 150 cases were recorded from January this year,” he told The Malaysian Insider.
He said this was 43.8% less than the 267 cases reported during the same period last year.
“The reduction in cases, is a result of preventive measures carried out by the police, other agencies such as rukun tetangga and community policing activities,” he added.
He also revealed that crime rate in the district had gone down 32.3% from last year.
“There were 750 cases from January to date, this is lower compared to 1,109 cases in the same period last year,” he said.
He also highlighted that most of the crime cases in the district were committed by foreigners.
Zaki stressed that awareness among the public on combating crime was a crucial part of the solution.
“We believe that if the community is involved and committed in joining hands with the authorities, crime rate can be further reduced,” he said. – May 22, 2015.
