Pedigree dog food is a very low quality food for any living animal. It has preservatives and lots of salt, so it may be the cause of them loosing hair. Alpo is slightly better but you should opt for better quality stuff like California Natural or even Purina Proplan is better.

Thought pedigree is claimed to be designed for dogs, it's actually no better than feeding table scraps. Same goes to brands like Whiskas, Smartheart, Trusty etc.

My Autumn's girl had a litter last month on the 9th. Got 2 girls that may be able to find a nice cozy home. Feel free to view them and play with them. They'll be at Fluff, so when you're bored do take them out to play and cuddle.

That cage looks a bit small. Rats can grow quite big so maybe something the size of a medium zoozone or a small dog cage with narrower bars would be better. I have slept with my rats before, I was playing with them and fell asleep once. I woke up and straight panicked! Searched everywhere and found them sleeping under my pillow! lol

I tried putting them on my bed a few times and on the sofa. They don't even show effort to run away, they would rather snuggle under the pillow or under my shirt. biggrin.gif

I used to bring Winter out in my shirt. Yes! My shirt!! tongue.gif She would run around my pants hem and peek out from my collar, even hitch a ride on my shoulder. If I didn't want her on my shirt I would put her in my hand bag. She peeks out once awhile and sleeps inside with my phone and wallet. biggrin.gif

RIP Winter.... sad.gif

Bedding I use WoodyPet as the absorption is very good, it's only the woody smell I have to deal with. Healthypet and Breeder Celect is good too. My friend tried crystal cat litter, apparently it works too, but I prefer not to use as I'm afraid they make eat or chew on it.

Newspaper can stain the fur and tail with ink and isn't very healthy for them if they chew on it. When you do not change the bedding regularly enough, the tail will stain greyish and will really stink.

Annie : I'm not sure what age I bred her because I don't know her birthdate. But she was with me more than 4 months before she bred. smile.gif

I take her out of the bag often to poo and pee.

As for the bedding, it would depend on how many rats you have in one cage. For one or 2 rats, the bedding can last for quite awhile. One of the pros to Woody pet bedding is that you can tell when to change the bedding by sight. Once most of the pellets have crumbled, then it's time to change.

Estimated time for 2 rats, once every 2 weeks. But if you only put a thin layer of bedding, once a week.

The bedding absorbs the moisture from the poo. So the poo poo becomes dry and won't stick.

Those are mice dear. smile.gif

You can try breeder celect, healthy pet or woodypet. All very good odour absorption.

I did bring in some lab blocks before, by Purina Mills. Not cheap and not available in Malaysia. Nearest place available is Singapore, which is where I got mine. 50lbs bag about RM250++.

5 bags of 2lbs also at the same price.

But if you ask me, I can see the difference between lab blocks and commercial rodent diets. They get bigger, more robust and chunkier, look healthier too. But the cons are shelf life is very short, recommended to store in the freezer and it's pricey.

Btw, anyone want to join the small animal gathering? The more the merrier. biggrin.gif

Yeap, he's taking a sister pair. Born on 9 August 08. Their other sister, Carey, paraded around the tank with her head in a toilet roll, wearing it like a hat! lol We thought her head was stuck, but then she stopped and the toilet roll fell off. Then she stuck her head in again and walked around with it on purpose! Silly girl. tongue.gif

U can try getting pyrethrin based shampoo. Available under the brand 'TROY'. I still have some but the shampoo is like, almost 2 years old. If you can't find this brand, I can pass you some. Bathe once, then repeat about 2 weeks later.

Was rushing so I didn't manage to bathe them before passing to you. When you free can find some time to mandi them la. Take care of them ya, Michet tends to like to venture out of the cage/tank when she gets the oppotunity, so be careful.

Yes, the last time I was there about a month ago had some rats for sale, but they looked a bit thin.

Easiest and cheapest would be chicken feed, but only chicken feed isn't good either. You can mix it with grains, a small amount of sunflower seeds and nuts, cheap dog food and some biscuits.

Hamster cages are small for rats. Rats can grow quite big. Price is anywhere between RM7 to RM40.

The rat will have your budgie for dinner if in the same cage. In the same house as u and your bird in a separate cage is fine, but no direct contact.

show off ur rats guys!!! LOL

bwt, one of my rat has a lump under her neck.. anyone can help me on how to treat this prob?

b4 dis i gave her gardenia bread but now hav changed to dog kibble..
*
Like Ryo said, it's either a growth, abcess or tumor. Better to get it checked. Choose kibbles that have fillers but dont get lousy brands. Kibble that are actually good for do not contain fillers. Pet Safari sells Regal Rat by Oxbow, havent tried it myself tho since I no longer own rats at the mo.

QUOTE(RyoKenzaki @ Jul 7 2010, 12:14 AM)
How old is her? Sound like tumor, like my late michet sad.gif
*
Heya Ryo, sorry to hear that. Haven't really been updating myself much due to studies. sad.gif Thank you for taking such good care of her. I'm sure she felt it too.

QUOTE(Iddy @ Jul 17 2010, 02:10 AM)
Any fancy rat breeders here? I'm interested to hv it as a pet but i dont know whr to buy. i'm not keen on buying from petshops as they dont really care abt the pets they sell. Rats from breeders are generally tamer. Anyone can help me with this?
*
There used to be some breeders but now most ppl breed for their snake and such. You can try contacting some of the snake ppl for rats since some of them breed their own or get from supplier. I saw some at petswonderland MV tho, Rm15 each.

QUOTE(shukri77 @ Sep 16 2010, 07:14 PM)
hi reanne. Winter is lovely. Where bought them? And how much theis usual price? I dont find any in jb petshop. Do u cage them or let them free? I am sorry for asking many question. Since u r the one who start this topic hope u can introduce rats to us. Dont forget to post in lyn Pet Store if u have babies rat to sell.
*
Hi there. Thx but Winter has already passed & I currently don't have any rats. Usually they're caged but you can actually let them free after they get very tame & bonded to you. Winter, Autumn & Noelle used to sleep on the couch with me & they would stay on the couch near me. They would snuggle under my pillow smile.gif Really miss them...

You're more than welcome to ask more questions.

Also note that rats & mice are very prone to tumors and growths. Winter's case was different tho, she came down suddenly with head tilt & it got worse day by day. Finally brought her to Dr.Jenny when she was still at Hands n Paws to put her down. Not a pleasant memory but it was for the better for her as she's not suffering anymore. sad.gif

I think tikusniaga is back to breeding them again
Anw rachel, just wanna let u know carey passed away last week, she is 2 1/2 years old, live longer than expected
*
Sorry for the late reply, been busy with stuff. Thx so much for caring for them. RIP Carey....

As for the cages, u know a bigger cage is better for rats. Winter was housed in a roughly 4ft x 2ft rabbit cage when she was still alive. They're not small like hamsters so they actually should have a bigger area to live in.

Hi everyone, I have a pair of lovely girls for adoption, one is a hairless and one is a black berkshire. They are free and come with the tank, bottle, food bowl and litter tray. More info is available in the adoption thread. Thanks.
