see thread title. we're discussing about malay name bro..pasal perangai haramjadah tu cerita lain. yang nama muhammad tapi perangai macam babi pun berlambak.

the main purpose for the lineage name is, IMO, is to know/aware your lineage.

**this is supposed to be a reply for a previous poster. Just now i realised i forgot to quote him/her. Duhh

Yup, Wan Adam.

His dad also Wan xxxx.

Odd that his supposed family name is in front.

so, nothing surprising. normally those names inherited from the father.

but in some cases, oso ken inherit from mother. eg since my dad is peasant, but manage to score with a royal, then my step bro all got Nik names. later divorce marry peasant got me. peasant name. dang

Then how do malays trace their ancestry if no surname for traceability?

There's chances your children's spouse having the same great grandparent right??

I'm just imagining last time ppl use to have dozens of children...
When comes to 3rd generation, you might not even know that you are relatives...

As melei is assimilating arabic ways of naming, so I will discuss the theory in this.

Arabs actually will remember their grandfather, greatgranpa, great great granpa name. But this is only applicable to people with good lineage. The peasant or scrub doesnt care less.

When melei adopt the naming, similiarly, people with noble blood (ah semua keturunan pirate bugis) will actually remember their great great great granpa name but also in addition have either Tunku, Tengku, Teuku in their name to symbolize their status. But scrub like me, couldnt care less about the ancestry as we dont benefit from it.
