Today im at goverment place, suddenly got a few name been called

All got same surname

Eg Ali Merican Ahmad Merican

Syakira Merican Ahmad Merican

And so on, why liddis ah? Why malay got family name? They proud of ancestors or what?

A few malay got family name. usually bangsawan dahulu kala.

i think the most commonly heard is the 'merican' surname.. last time petronas president also got this surname. not sure everybody is related or not..

another one that i think quite uncommon is AB.. at 1st, i thought it is the short form for 'abdul', and it is not. it was pronounced as A-B..

Dei that is not family name la. Confuse ke gelaran and family NAME?

Family is is inherit from great2 grandfather eg Shahabjan

So all children got shahabjan at behind their name, same like father. Mother if got family name, must change to husband family name after married.

Some family name in malay is in front.

ie: wan ahmad wan badruddin (wan), megat junid megat ayub (megat), tengku malik tengku halim (tengku)

in Malay, the wife doesnt not inherit the family name. only children.
