I dont think spending power is an issue unless you're aiming for higher end boards, I think what the community needs a stronger kick into the DIY area. Local mkb enthusiasts making PCB's...etc etc...instead of talking about expensive poison most people aren't willing to fork out for, why not talk about ways you can reach those poison by taking the DIY route. Promote customisation.

QUOTE(dadudeneverabides @ Mar 2 2016, 02:27 PM) Ahahahahahaa. The difference is also DIY can be done step by step, like for example a RM600 board. Every month just fork out 200 to get the parts, instead of one shot rm600 for an expensive board, this promotes budgeting of expenses. DIY gives people more ideas to share, more reason to communicate with each other to share methods and solutions when there are problems. I'm a very DIY person, I DIY'ed some audio amplifiers, even my headphones are heavily modded, I'm a person who loves DIY and because I'm in DIY I used to chat for hours and days with people, from around the world even, we are sharing our ideas and what parts we can use locally or internationally. Do you even know the cost of doing a custom? If you wanna do 60% custom to the point where you are proud to own it, I'd say it takes about RM600 or so, sans keycaps. A good keycap set? Maybe RM800 or so then you'll be okok to show it off. That's not including the extreme amount of labour involved in building it to specifications. DIY and customization? Please hold your words until you've seen what it actually entails. Unless you're talking about keycaps only, then we can talk anything from RM80 to RM800 for a full set. I know you're trying to save consumers here, but be careful that people might think you trying to kuda here. On top of that, I know for a fact that decent Gateron-switched TKLs are available from taobao at around RM200+ only, so if I were to be given a choice, I rather pick Gaterons rather than Oetemu. If all you're thinking about is the price, then the community isn't going anywhere except Window shopping or Cuci mata. For example GH60 satan pcb costs about 100, case get a decent one also another 100, gateron switches another 100 or so. Stabs etc, and leftover keycaps? RM50+-, if you already have a soldering kit that only comes down to RM350+- cheaper than a Pok3r. If you want plate and more expensive case then that's your problem. What's even better is that you can choose what keys you want to have what switches. DIY was never an easy thing, but because it's not easy that people come together to help each other out. I don't have to hold my words. I'm thinking on how to grow the community not bring it down. This post has been edited by siles1991: Mar 2 2016, 03:57 PM |

DIY is more than just building an entire board from scratch, it's also modifying current boards, add LED's to an LED-less board, adding materials to reduce clack etc etc. It doesn't have to be expensive, it's just that majority of mkb veterans only aim for high-end stuff. You are basically telling every newbie out there that DIY and customisation is only for the rich. If you are always aiming for the premium stuff obviously everything is gonna be expensive.

QUOTE(quovadis123 @ Mar 2 2016, 03:53 PM) Just revive back a forummer faridr. exactly! His stuff RM300++ not even reaching the RM600 mark, quality wise most of us aren't pro at DIY so we can't expect to hit QC standards of more expensive brands, but the point is to have your very own baby, something only you have, something you saw grow from scratch or something you saw grew from something average to something special.https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3234902 Lots of passion in his project of DIY. |

QUOTE(dadudeneverabides @ Mar 2 2016, 06:22 PM) I'm saying it takes a lot of passion and spending, and considering a lot of people people won't even spend more than RM200 in total, how many people would spend RM600+ to go kastam? That's all I'm saying. Anyone who would go that far is obviously doing it as a hobby (as you'd probably notice that anyone in this thread having a solder kit is really a hobbyist at heart) and would therefore be a little more than what an average user is looking for. Im not all talk, im going custom, already planning a 60% and a TKL build, using gateron clears, for 60% either GH60 satan or NERD60, TKL still finding for a PCB, easiest set i've seen is the groupbuy going on at the fb group which people seem to be salty about Also, you really shouldn't talk only, but if you really want to go custom, go for it. Don't become like the church pastor who just talk the talk but never walk the walk. If you need help, I have 3 boards running made with love from "scratch" into devices that I can be proud of. So you're saying since there's nobody that has a passion and spending power, so we shouldn't care? If people see a non-active community why would they jump in? You rather join a community that has people constantly discussing about boards, how to make them, how to modify them. Or a dead group that only posts about new boards and people asking whats the best cheapest board, no longer a club more like a recommendation thread.
