Hi guys,

About to make a purchase for a Preve CFE.
My wife and I needed a new car. We thought our current saga was quite unsafe. The economic weather didn't look all that great to buy an expensive car as well.

We didn't expect much when we went to the showroom for a test drive.
But the salesperson was very patient and good to us. We actually tested Iris and Preve CFE like 6 times.
Story short, I am pretty amazed and proud of where Proton is going towards. It might look cliched but I felt a sense of pride when we finally decided to buy a Proton.

I would like to ask the forum's opinion on adding a reverse camera for the car, should I buy the one the showroom suggested (RM450)? or is there a cheaper way to add a camera and still keep the warranty for everything installed on the car?

Also, we are getting the CFE because we heard that the IAFM+ feels underpowered.
Would it be better to get the IAFM one if we wanted a quieter car?
Is there an alternative to adding a reverse camera on the IAFM+ Preve without spending too much as well?

Thank you.

if CFE, just need spend another 250~300 for adding reverse camera on your original HU. If IAFM+, either change whole HU which is expensive, or adding external view monitor on rear view mirror or whole external unit.. Range around rm200. I would recommend for the turbo version if you are afford it. showroom/proton will not help u to add reverse camera one, most likely is your SA help you to install at outside vendor.. If u lazy to find the accessories then let him settle everything for you..

Hi ChuanHong,

Thank you for your insight.
The SA quoted me RM450. And I thought I should go with him to avoid warranty issues.
You think it would be safe (Warranty wise) to get it outside?
I don't mind going outside to get it done cheaper. Need to find somewhere in PJ to do it.

Thank you.

Get the Preve Turbo as the power will make a big difference and render the low-spec Preve to be underpowered. Similarly, I have read (and told by one owner) about low-spec Preve owners regretting not going for the high-spec Turbo model.

The Proton Preve is a good value for money car at its price point despite some of the quality issues which can be rectified (within the warranty period) and suitable for those who don't want to spend anything more than RM70k.
*
Yeah, will get the Preve CFE. Going to speak to the SA today.
He is giving 5K+3K (Born 1985) discount.

Thanks again!

If you can, fork out some extra budget to get the CFE, just for the more powerful engine. I suggest test drive both units until you're satisfied, because every so often you can read that they regretted not getting the CFE version just to save a few Ks.
Any installation will, or should, void the warranty, even done by authorised SA.  But I've heard if it was to be done by Proton Glenmarie, warranty won't void.
However, most of the times SC will not care for the reverse camera installation because it does not involve any wire cutting and the HU already has the socket, just plug and play.
*
Preve CFE it is then.
Well, to be safe then, might as well ask the SA to install it. Since the showroom also has a service centre, will go back to them for service and such.

The reverse camera will be auto right? As in when I engage reverse, then it will automatically show the camera. Would suck if it is the kind where you need to switch it on the player to see whats behind.

Thanks mushy.

Depends on model, but all I've seen so far are automatic type.

Yes, automatically shown when you engage reverse gear.

Thanks guys!

RM450 it is then.
Finalizing stuff with the SA.

Sooo... I am not sure if anyone if facing this... My gear knob and console (the block inside the car the gear know is connected to, next to my butt cheek) Vibrates loudly when I accelerate (pedal to the metal).... Is this normal? The car is 3 days old. I didn't see the same on the test drive unit.

But gosh, its quite smooth when driving lightly...

Anything that vibrates loudly is not normal, especially new cars. I can relate to your experience in having vibration around the gearbox area, the mechanism below the gear knob (my car is now 2 years 1 month old). In my car, there is no sound within the 1st year but after 1 year, there is minor intermittent vibration from the gearbox area, the sound of plastic rubbing against plastic during low speed acceleration ie. light acceleration. If it's hard acceleration, I wager you won't hear any minor vibration inside the car as the loud roaring of the engine will overwhelm any sort of minor vibration inside the car. If you happen to perceive a loud vibration during hard acceleration, I suppose the vibration or rattling of the loose fitting is quite loud or major.

New cars should not have any sort of major vibration or rattling sound. However, over time there would be minor rattling sound from the car due to wear and tear. In usual circumstances, if the vibration or rattling sound is major, it usually can be fixed at the service centre. However, if the vibration or rattling sound is minor, or the noise comes up intermittently, it is usually difficult to be fixed or troubleshoot, usually not worth the effort as the mechanics will likely not know how to resolve those noises, especially since they are minor.

Thanks SportyHandling.

I will check with the SC on the first service.

NO problem. Hope you will have the problem sorted out at the service centre. For abnormal loud rattling sound or vibration, I would think they would be able to resolve it for you, and they are obliged to do so. As for minor rattling sound that would be debatable and difficult, though you can still try. Sometimes some minor rattling sound may eventually disappear by itself without any effort or troubleshooting. It depends a bit on luck sometimes.

Looks like service centre said that the noise I am hearing is normal... O.o
I guess I can learn to tune it out...

RM225 for my first service. Quite high actually, probably cause I went for 10K fully synthetic.

But honestly, I am pretty impressed at the power I am getting from the 1.6 CFE.

Tyres are pretty grippy too. But on the noisy side. Maybe change to something quieter later.

Anyone did sound proofing to mask the CVT and engine sounds? Probably voids warranty right?

i don't like Champiro BAX 2 at all. it's definitely not grippy as u said. push a bit into corners and it will scream and lose traction. very scary. plus two times i got bulging issue with this tyre. now changed to Bridgestone RE003 and I am a super happy driver thumbup.gif

greater grip on par with PS3, and it won't scream no matter how hard u pushed it. u feel very well planted no matter the speed. and it is more comfortable to ride than Champiro BAX 2, like rolling on a sponge! rclxm9.gif

Maybe I don't drive as fast as I think. But I've not heard the screech of the tyres.
And in all honesty, I've not heard of Champiro. I like the quiet Michelin Primacy 3ST.

How long does it take for the Champiro to loose its thread? 30K KM? 40K KM?

You don't have service discount vouchers? The higher price is likely due to the full synthetic engine oil you have opted for. Synthium 800 is sufficient for the Preve Turbo.

Power is certainly good due to the Turbo engine.

First time I heard about this discount vouchers... What is this magical item about?

not sure... at 30k km i still have around 30% thread before changed
when my tyre bulged, to save on tight budget i opt for used PS3, 50% thread. it grips on dry and rain but didn't scream when pushed as BAX2 did. BAX2 really scream and lose its traction.

i love PS3, it performs and comfort, but when I heard RE003 is on a promo price, i grab it. cheaper than PS3 almost RM400/piece for this size.

no matter what, bulging is serious and costly to your pocket. a tyre that can last long needs to change early because of bulging. i rather not risk it on BAX2. very bad tyre.
*
Thanks man...
Might want to change the tyres earlier than normal then. PS3 is expensive, but I put it as one of the good performers out there. I've used to use them until I changed to 3ST for cheaper but still quiet alternative.

I will never buy another Continental Tyre again. Really scares me.

Sooo, a little bit of spirited driving today on the highway and my ABS light turned on and never turned off. Read the manual at the petrol station and it says the ABS might be faulty.
Restarted the car and it was fine again.

Sometimes the sound that we hear may not be accurately represented in words. There are several "noises" when the car is accelerating.

1. Low frequency sound from the engine which is normal with any cars when you step on the pedal to accelerate the car. With the Preve Turbo, the sound is just a bit louder, more diffused.
2. High-pitch sound from the CVT which some people associate with the "aeroplane sound". Some people call it a whistling sound. The sound can be heard when the car is accelerating though is faint and not very loud, since the louder noise from the engine has masked this softer whistling sound from the CVT.
3. The infamous "woo woo sound" from the CVT. This sound varies with cars. The noise is softer in some cars, louder in some other cars. If you hear an abrnormal LOUD woo woo sound from the car, then it is likely that the transmission (or something else) is faulty.

As everyone's ears are different without any benchmark or comparison purposes, a perceived "loud" woo woo sound may be normal. In other words, the woo woo sound may be prominent and annoying, but it is not exactly loud. It is just that the person chooses to use the word "loud" to describe on the woo woo sound. Having said that, if one strongly feels that the woo woo sound is loud and abnormal, by all means get the car checked at the service centre. If the sound is abnormally loud, then chances are the transmission is defective.

In my case of a defective gearbox, the loud woo woo sound does not happen when the car is moving at moderate speeds, say 80km/h to 120km/h. The woo woo sound only happens at low speed 0 to 40 km/h and when the car is stationary at 0 km/h, and it is loud to the point that you will know that something is really wrong with the car (in my case the gearbox).
*
Quite accurate.
I do hear a whistling sound after 40 km/h which I thought was from the turbo. It is literally like someone placed a whistle on the front of the car while air glides through the whistle. I find it amusing. And I think to myself, I damn proud I got a Malaysian car. I save a ton of money since my requirements were more towards safety. And then I continue zooming all over the place cause the car is pretty powerful... Puts a smile on my face everytime!

soo.... Just realised the creaking sound is coming from when I turn my wheels left and right. Firection of sound in the cabin seems to be from the inside the dashboard in front of the passenger side. Well, anyone know if there is anything I can ask the SC to look out for me when I send it in? Maybe a known faulty power steering module or somesort?

Yes, and it will pluck your bulu at the holder area.
My wife does not have that issue, likely because no bulu.

You can remove the wheels and open the callipers. Or get someone to do it for you.

Likely that the rotor has been scratched. Whether to skim, would depends on your preference. If you believe it is a defect, claim warranty.

Thanks Mengsuan.
Looks like another visit to the service centre.
Shouldn't be too hard I guess.

The stock tyres are good, hard compound so it can really register crazy mileage and still be OK, at the cost of noise. But there are better tyres than this for the same cost, have you considered it?

Answer to your question, no, I don't know which shop that sells them.
What are you talking about? Seems normal to me.

O.o
I think I better bring my car back to Proton to test. Like I don't have power steering. But as I remember, test drive unit was also quite hard to turn. Maybe after using the car for so long already, the weight of the wheel getting to me. sad.gif I'm becoming old...
