Anyone here knows how to go about modifying pedals? Would like to learn and see what kind of sounds I can cough up with after souping up my Boss DS-1 pedal.

anyone able to do a distortion box or headphone amp for guitar with the eclipse mints tin cases?
i got a few of the cases, cool mints btw btw, heres what someone else did with theirs. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Portable-headphone-...1QQcmdZViewItem also heres a circuit diagram for something similar to the smokey amp. http://www.redcircuits.com/Page96.htm tho i dont think it can fit into those mint tin cases, can it? and yea yea, i know its not gonna sound good. passable cleans, or even just a mild distortion is good enough. just something cheap that you can bring around and play your guitar thru headphones with, or even drive some small speaker. tried this before but i'm not sure what's not right, maybe the caps, chips and other parts from jalan pasar are just not suitable. i tried a simple distortion unit and it sounded so thin, more like a raged fuzz.... anyways maybe because i'm not electronically trained, just follow schematic.
swapping pickups, changing jacks, vol, tone etc. on the other hand is not a problem. jsut need a good soldering iron and a steady hand. |

I was foraging thru the net and came across a souped-up DS-1 called the DS-1 ultra. Apparently, Joe Satriani, Vai and Petrucci use them...
You can see it at http://www.robertkeeley.com Would really wanna get one for myself. However, the nearest dealer I can find is guitar77 in Singapore. Then again, rather than spend a coupla hundred bucks on another distortion pedal, the uncle was recommending that I send my DS-1 to America just to have it upgraded. - Soldering Iron, lead, holder and sucker (maybe)
- Experience in soldering and a "working" area - Circuit diagram(s) - Lotsa time... - If you're changing ICs (JRCs), I suggest to use an IC holder, in case u wanna switch back... I made a tremolo (tremulus lune) a long long time ago... still keepin it for sentimental value... ![]() Wonder if its still working... This post has been edited by alfee29: Nov 18 2006, 06:43 PM |

How's the sound?- Experience in soldering and a "working" area - Circuit diagram(s) - Lotsa time... - If you're changing ICs (JRCs), I suggest to use an IC holder, in case u wanna switch back... I made a tremolo (tremulus lune) a long long time ago... still keepin it for sentimental value... ![]() Wonder if its still working... I managed to find the circuit diagrams for the DS-1 pedal. Apparently, by changing the stock capacitors & potentiometers to higher quality ones, you can fatten up the sound or something. Now to look for someone with the experience & know-how of what to change & stuff. Any ideas? |

QUOTE(changhao @ Nov 18 2006, 10:17 PM) that's basically the primary principal in pedal modding but since i'm not electronically schooled, how do i know that the new parts i have are "better"? some of the classic pedals actually get their unique sounds from inferior parts and some parts are just specific to get the sound you're after like the spraque caps (orange drops) in tube amps. and anyone with leads to "better quality" parts, please share with us here. |

While I can't speak for other types of pedals, the DS-1 is apparently the subject of many upgrades. From what I've read in Wikipedia about the pedal, changing some of the capacitors and the three potentiometers can drastically "improve" the tones produced by the pedal (of course, the idea of "improved" is subject to debate as you've rightly pointed out).
As far as I know, most of the parts used in producing the DS-1s are generally of average quality. For high quality parts, I guess we'll have to ask the electrical engineers for recommendations of reputable manufacturers. Simpletons like myself have a stereotype that as long as the components are made in Germany, they should be good stuff (though I'm probably wrong). |

Just killed my DS-1 pedal with an attempt at the following mod:
QUOTE BOSS DS-1 Distortion Mods By Keeley Effects The SEEING EYE MOD It doesn't work now, but the LED still glows a funky blue! These are the mods that we have come up with. Mostly they try to give the pedal a more high fidelity sound and make it a little more tube like by use on one LED in the clipping section instead of two (commonly seen as a mod). We use metal film caps available from www.digi-key.com C1, C5, C12change to 0.1uF metal film (104) C2, C8, C9, C14 change to 1uF metal film (105) C7 220pf silver mica or monolithic In the DS-Ultra mod we change C11 to a 0.047uF metal film or better and lower R13 to 2.4Kohm. As well as changing C3 and C13 to 0.1Uf metal film or better. D5 change to 3mm red led (the power LED that we take out!) In the D-Ultra mod we switch in another LED in series with D4. R39 20K R14 1.5K R35 2.4K if you change the power LED to a 5mm Yellow LED Add 47pf cap across clipping diodes, see second picture little green dot in the center. 7/64 drill bit needed to drill out 3mm LED for the SEEING EYE PART! |

Anyway, now that the bugger's officially malfunctioned, I don't mind putting it to additional experimentation & tinkering. If anybody has any ideas you wish to try, PM me and I'll make arrangements to meet up and see how we can destroy the thing further!

QUOTE(SweetTooth @ Jun 1 2007, 08:43 PM) Yes, definitely possible...btw I just made a Dallas Rangemaster...it's a treble booster which uses a vintage germanium transistor, kinda smooths out the highs. Eric Clapton used one of these if I'm not mistaken. |
