Yes...you are correct. They uses the same NoteBook hardisk. It's a IDE hardisk btw, not SATA. Don't buy the wrong one. It's kinda hard to take the HD out so do it carefully.

Altogether, SATA is a different interface. SATA connectors and IDE connectors are not interchangeable. Newer technology, incompatible drives.

kenling was right. Just get an external drive. Easy. How come I never thought of that in the first place? doh.gif

Get an external casing that supports firewire one. I do sometimes experience problems with external hardsik with USB only but not a single problem with firewire. If you have more cash get a notebook HD with external casing supporting firewire port. It gets it's power from the firewire port, so you don't have to lug an extra power adaptor around.

here's what you should do if you don't plan to re-install the OS:
1) Get your new drive ready.
2) Get a external casing for notebook HDD, put in your new drive.
3) Connect the external case with the new HDD inside to your iBook.
4) iBook should mount the drive if it's pre-formated. If not, fire up Disk Utility and format it to Mac OS X Journaled.
5) Use backup software to clone your startup drive into the new drive.
6) Try to boot from the external drive if you're using firewire casing.
7) Replace the startup drive with your new drive if the test run ok.

If you find even those detailed step-by-step instructions by Wei confusing then you've got problems dude.

Be prepared to pay someone to do the upgrade for you. I wouldn't advise DIY unless you've got some basic computer troubleshooting ability.

In this case, I suggest that after your warranty, you do it yourself. If you send it to Apple Service Centre, it cost at least double the price of the current market. My friend was charged RM550 for a 60GB HDD early this year.
