here's what you should do if you don't plan to re-install the OS:
1) Get your new drive ready.
2) Get a external casing for notebook HDD, put in your new drive.
3) Connect the external case with the new HDD inside to your iBook.
4) iBook should mount the drive if it's pre-formated. If not, fire up Disk Utility and format it to Mac OS X Journaled.
5) Use backup software to clone your startup drive into the new drive.
6) Try to boot from the external drive if you're using firewire casing.
7) Replace the startup drive with your new drive if the test run ok.
