If it's software issues , flashing and resetting it alone should help . Flash custom rom or rooting is not the solution to every software problems . Might as well ask Samsung dev to stop development since there are custom rom developers who are willing to "fix" the issue . Besides , widget is consider a bloatware which most custom roms remove it unless u flash it in separately

What if it doesn't ? Might as well factory reset the phone without the risk of losing warranty for the sake of 1 widget not working .
Try to pin point the problem , could be a 3rd party app that is causing the problem , could be live wallpaper as someone mentioned it OR it could be a bad widget from the firmware which he's using .

No need mx player to cast to screen i think , as long as it can play on your phone , it will be the same on the tv eg using samsung stock video player . And MHL-HDMI adaptor u mean ?

MHL HDMI perfectly working well. Make sure you get the newer MHL adapter as older type meant for Note2, S2 n below will not work.
