Scandal-ridden Cuckoo losing edge in water, air purifier market

음성듣기

Cuckoo CEO Koo Bon-hak

By Park Si-soo

Cuckoo Electronics is falling out of favor with its customers in the wake of a series of scandals involving the company's core water and air purification products.

The scandals are seen to have let down the company's overseas customers and tarnished its budding reputation, dealing a blow to its ambitious overseas expansion, according to market insiders and analysts.

The Seoul-based firm has sought to expand overseas, especially in Southeast Asia, with high-end air purifiers. But their filters were recently found to have been tainted with a toxic chemical substance named octylisothiazolinone (OIT). Prof. Lim Jong-han of Inha University's medical school discovered the toxic substance in a test of five bestselling air purifying filters.

"Nearly 2,095 ppm of OIT was found on average in Cuckoo's filter," Lim said. Korea's environment ministry designated OIT as a toxic chemical in 2014, barring its use in the making of products that can pose health risks.

Amid soaring criticism, Cuckoo recently recalled OIT-contaminated filters in Korea, but market insiders said the company is reluctant to do so in overseas markets.

Last week, Cuckoo became a target for criticism once again for what TV regulators said were false and exaggerated promotions of its water purifiers on TV home shopping channels during the first half of this year. Several directors of Korea's two major TV shopping channels -- Home & Shopping and CJ O Shopping -- were disciplined heavily for airing misleading information on Cuckoo's water purifiers, according to the Korea Communications Standard Commission (KCSC).

"Cuckoo's water purifiers were promoted as if their filters make mineral-rich water that's good for health. The purifier is also promoted on the claim that its filtered water is effective in skincare and curing damaged skin," a KCSC official said. "These claims were proven to be groundless scientifically."

The official said the KCSC will put Cuckoo products under a watchful eye throughout the second half of the year to protect people from misleading information.

Financial analysts said these scandals would make it difficult for Cuckoo to reach its sales target for the second quarter. Citing the murky outlook, Meritz Securities recently revised down its target per-share price of Cuckoo from 250,000 won to 210,000 won.

Meanwhile, Coway, Korea's biggest water and air purifier maker that was recently hit by the so-called "nickel scandal," is quickly restoring customers' confidence with a swift recall and other compensation campaigns.

So which water filter that provide cold & hot water are recommended for indoor?
*
For hot & cold water, what you need is water dispenser. You can easily get from any water filter shop for less than RM500, no need to spend few thousands.

Actually for hot & cold water the dispenser will need to have water tanks. Since filtered water will remove Chlorine which intend to kill bacteria, there is potential for microorganism to grow in the water tank. Hot & cold water is just a fancy additional features for "convenience", but how often do you really need hot & cold water?

I don't think any of those can remove heavy metal.

RO water may not be good for health but I think they do.

There are a bundle of heavy metal elements here biggrin.gif

I m using Aquaphor DWM 101 RO system. RO is the purest water quality but there are several disadvantage of it as well. I do have 1 unit brand new here, any1 wanna try it out, i can offer special price smile.gif

From my unit i notice :
1) Storage capacity 5L, during CNY we cook a lot and seems like 5L is not enough for us.
2) A little noise from the filter could b just my unit as i m not using their original faucet.
3) WHen it is new, flushing could take a longer time
*
Anything to support your claims?
From what i know, purest water is distilled water.

As this thread is discussing home appliances, wasnt thinking of distilled water.

Among household water filter system, i believe RO is the cleanest as it filters almost everything including mineral. Even Aquaphor do sell RO system but i still think Crystal Eco is a better choice if consider cost, maintenance, size and etc.

Maybe, it's what you believe.

RO water is not a healthy way for long run.
You may read the report by WHO about demineralized water

Still it doesn't state what material use for the remizeralisation. Mineral won't just dissolve like that in water as it pass through rocks or materials. The most efficient way still is using chemical type mineral which dissolve rapidly in water.

I am using tourmaline stone filters for remineralised the water and single molecule  filters to provide oxygen and easy to drink. Beside that waste water from Ro system filters will recycle back to the Ro filters.

Cool man, i wonder how much it cost for a filter, how much carats is your filter?

MLM Products are simply overpriced, tend to avoid them, there are more generic ones that worth exploring for the price it's worth. Previously explored Culligan, now trying to go RO or anything that is value for money yet reliable in filtration. Still looking...

It means you never study on it, that's why you say it is overpriced.
Not all MLM are as bad as you said, study the tech behind and the price before judging.

Hi, I looking for water purifier for my kitchen.
I prefer budget below RM900, dont need use power plug.
the filter maintenance was not very expensive. change around 1 year once.
If can the water can direct drink or need boil again?
Thank you

When choosing water filter system, you should concern about the technology used and the quality of it. Most of the time we only buy once or twice water filter system in our life, so price shouldn't be the main concern.

I have used more than 6 types of water filters smile.gif Even used ceramic filters before. The more we sell, the more we learn and we eventually change and change and change now i believe this is the best already smile.gif

Family health is the most important thing. I believe many members also bought those gimmick or miracle water filters before and later find them useless and throw away smile.gif I have many customers converted to Aquaphor and heard lots of stories. I also bought those miracle filters hoping to cure my eczema but they didnt work

As per photo, i m using two water filters + an external water dispenser now for testing, this is like my lab already hahaha
*
So how is your eczema already? I also have this problem last time.

cant cure ... however the acid water from the Rubine machine reduce itchiness only.

Recently i m using this lotion + lip balm and i find it very good. If hand or leg crack just apply the lip balm, will heal within 1 - 2 days. The Lip Balm is so far the best i have used, seriously 1 day can c result as per what they claim in the website

This brand only available in Health Lane or Big Pharmacy.

Eczema can't be cured completely but u can control it. U need more omega 3 to prevent it from inflammation & itchiness. Omega 3 can get from salmon fish or supplements. Cream and lotion only helps to soothe the problem temporary, need to take care of your diet to control it.

QUOTE(davido @ Aug 23 2016, 08:41 PM)
Hi all,

I'm looking to install a 3-way kitchen faucet with a water filter. I'm looking for a good 3 way tap and a good water filter to go along. I like the Grohe Blue very much (see picture), but the replacement filter price is just too expensive.

The filter replacement price for Grohe Blue is USD199 for 3000 liters capacity - I think this is too expensive.

An alternative is to install a separate 3 way faucet with an under sink filter. Any recommendations for a Good 3 way faucet and good undersink filter?

I'm also considering the Amway espring, but the problem is that it cannot be fitted to a 3-way faucet. Anyone knows how to fit the eSpring to a 3 way faucet?

For those who don't know, a 3 way faucet is a single kitchen tap that dispenses hot/cold water, and a separate knob for filtered water. Please see the video for a 3 way faucet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f89cN3vfimE

Would really prefer premium brands like Grohe, but they don't have any 3-way faucets (except for Grohe Blue).

Any recommendations is appreciated.

Amway eSpring have a separate faucet unit install beside the sink.

Thanks all. I don't need any convincing about eSpring. I know its good - in fact, I'm currently using the Amway WTS (the model before eSpring) and overall I'm very satisfied with Amway. Even the price is very reasonable.

Actually I should rephrase my question as - how to connect eSpring to a 3 way faucet (which accepts only under sink filters)? Failure of which, what would be a good under sink filter alternative?

Why do I insist on a 3-way faucet? For space constraints. It eliminates the need to mount a second faucet for the filtered water. And you also don't need to run ugly tubes on the main pipe.

Checked out a lot of kitchen specialist shops today - and there none who have a 3-way faucet. Looks like the trend never caught up here in Malaysia.

Oh well, the search goes on for a 3-way faucet - possibly buying from the internet. There are many 3 way kitchen faucets on ebay. I might get one first and worry about the plumbing after I receive the faucet.

Thanks all for your assistance.

Btw, I also tested Grohe Blue today - I'm disappointed with it because it did not even have an aerator. Without an aerator, it causes the water to splash like crazy. It seems it cannot fit an aerator on the nozzle because the filter pipe is within the unfiltered pipe (if you understand a pipe, within a pipe). smile.gif

If u want to save space, the existing diverter valve already solved your problem??
The function of the diverter valve and the 3 way faucet have the same function what...
I never saw any 3 way faucet before, neither local or overseas, such as Switzerland, Taiwan, Singapore etc
Maybe what the 3 way diverter is used as a faucet by other brand of water treatment system?
