The combat is the icing on the cake. For me, it's the universe and how it made me feel. The characters were very important in that regard. The mystery of the reapers were compelling of course, but it's the very realistic universe that BW crafted that kept me going.
Hope that continues in MEA.

ME1 has the best plot so far, but gameplay is.. well.. not so great for its setting. ME2 improved the combat tremendously while taking out some core elements from ME1.
In the case of andromeda, it feels like they just put full focus on combat and then threw everything out the window
It's like a pattern. ME1->ME2, improved gameplay, reduced mechanics, ok ok plot compared to ME1 but understandable. ME2->ME3, further improved combat, removed some bloated mechanics, ok plot until the ending. ME3->MEA, revamped combat and movements, everything else downhill, added some mechanics from previous ME but simplified to hell.
Also, UI designer deserved to get dragged outside and shot

yes! it's the characters and the whole universe that was created through ME 1 and 2 that makes it so good.
like gbwedward says, the focus is more on combat action and simplified the rest of the thing, no more paragon or renegade options.
seems like to me, this MEA macam taking out more of the RPG elements out of the game.
me say, bagi chan lah, new UI designer lah...
me to me, THEY ALL DESERVED TO BE SHOT WITH A BLACKWIDOW SNIPER RIFLE
