In XCOM 2, the roles have been reversed, and XCOM is now the invading force. They are hampered by limited resources and must constantly evade the alien threat in their new mobile headquarters. Players must use a combination of firepower and stealth-like tactics to help XCOM recruit soldiers and build a resistance network, while attempting to expose the evil alien agenda and save humanity. XCOM 2 will introduce gameplay features such as procedurally-generated levels, which will make each experience unique to the player, as well as offer a much deeper level of modding support. Additionally, XCOM 2 will offer a variety of new content including five updated soldier classes, increased soldier customization, more alien and enemy types, evolved tactical combat and more.

Over the next month IGN will reveal huge details about XCOM 2, uncovered during our visit to Firaxis’ Maryland studio. Tomorrow you’ll get an in-depth overview and interview with Creative Director Jake Solomon that’ll highlight the major new features, including new soldier classes, new aliens, stealth-infused tactics, procedurally generated maps, and more. Following that, we’ll have a Rewind Theater examination of all the details in today’s trailer reveal with Solomon and Lead Producer Garth DeAngelis.

And, later this week we’ll go in-depth with Solomon and DeAngelis on the reasons behind the bold move to take XCOM from a multiplatform series to a PC exclusive, and how XCOM 2 will be tailored to take advantage of that single platform’s strengths – followed by Firaxis’ exciting plans to support modders and their work.

I'm happy XCOM is popular, hope it sells even more this time. rclxm9.gif

Jake Solomon still handling it so I'm pretty sure it will try to remain true to XCOM game.

Hmmm... does that mean we actually lost the first war and now the aliens are in control while XCOM is reduced to a group of anti-establishment military organization?

Most likely after the last event, XCOM is destroyed although we won the mission.

Remember that the world is actually under assault, we were only responding to a few incidents. The last mission shows that we were just being tested to see if we as a race were worthy of something. Where other races were also tested for ascension, they failed but is still absorbed as thralls for the alien conglomerate.

Most likely we pass the test and is absorbed to the alien culture by force to 'use' us for some other hidden reason. Hence the world is now controlled by aliens and the surviving XCOM must restart and resist.

In the last game, when you lose the game it shows how the council is mind controlled to close XCOM down. Won't be surprised if that happened anyway regardless if you win or lose.

0:00:32 - Alien cities are traps to lure in citizens for mysterious purposes; they're built on top of real-world cities.

0:02:47 - XCOM appears, starting concealed. Civilians might be alarmed by you sneaking around and alert the aliens to your presence.

0:03:30 - The idea behind the statue is that you can't be quite sure if the alien is picking the human up or leaving him behind.

0:04:15 - Ethereal sighted! Sort of.

0:04:38 - You'll have to avoid street scanners.

0:05:12 - Sectoids and Advent troopers communicate.

0:06:03 - Our intro to the XCOM classes and their robot pal, the Gremlin drone.

0:07:07 - Sharpshooter is using an upgraded weapon. Weapons are scavenged and upgraded with parts acquired from looting.

0:09:09 - How ambushes work to counteract the scamper. "We heard the scamper stuff loud and clear. There are actually a lot of ways around scamper."

0:10:06 - Advent use magnetic weapons, aliens use plasma.

0:10:22 - Vipers are the "true form" of the Thin Men. "Earth is their planet, so they don't have to hide anymore."

0:11:34 - "These weapons will wreck the environments. We've even gone so far that floors and ceilings are destructible."

0:11:54 - The Gremlin's stun is an area-of-effect weapon that also does minimal damage.

0:12:09 - "That's her bind. But the dangerous thing about the Viper is she doesn't need to find you. She can reach out with her tongue and pull her to you."

0:13:00 - "Aliens are much stronger - you really can't go toe-to-toe soldier-to-alien."

0:14:00 - Sectoid appears. "These are game assets...What the player is going to see in-game, these models are reflective of that."

0:14:36 - Melee combat. "The Ranger's great. They can deal a ton of damage with their sword, but that's a really risky move." "The Sectoid can mind-control you early."

0:15:30 - "You can carry your squadmates, and you have to carry your squadmates sometimes if they're hurt badly." "If there's a mission where you have to evac at the end, you're not going to want to leave your soldiers and their gear behind."

0:16:34 - You can call a Skyranger in anywhere on the map in most mission types. "As long as it's in a space where the Skyranger can hover." You can still be killed as you try to reach the exit.

0:17:16 - "The player gets to play in a wide variety of environments, and some of them are out in the wilderness where people probably wisely don't want to move into the cities, and XCOM often operates on the edges."

0:17:58 - The Avenger rises out of the canyon. "The idea is that the player's on the run, and they have a base now that is mobile."

0:18:55 - "The idea is that XCOM games have had so many subtitles, we felt it was time to clarify that this was the next step for the franchise, so it made sense to put a 2."

i think firaxis strike the balance with 6 man squad.

more than that, it would make the turn based mechanic tiresome.

I just have a funny thinking of the XCOM 2.

the whole XCOM 2 is a close resemblance of the gundam 00 season 2.

here is what I have in mind:

QUOTE
“When we looked at what we wanted to do with the sequel, we had all these very, very ambitious goals,” said Solomon. On his must-have list were high-fidelity characters and environments, better-looking destruction, physically based rendering, and the crown jewel he’d wanted to get into Enemy Unknown but couldn’t: procedurally generated maps. “To do that, we had to use all of our studio expertise … and our expertise here is PC. That's our home, and that's where we're really comfortable.”

QUOTE
Focusing all of Firaxis’ efforts on the PC made logistical sense to DeAngelis, too. “Internally, with a relatively small team for the size of the game that we are, to be able to say we can focus on our platform that the studio has a pedigree for, and that X-COM: UFO Defense has a pedigree for, as PC-only... it just made a lot of sense, and that's how we wanted to dedicate our time.” XCOM 2 runs on a heavily modified version of Unreal Engine 3.5 (Firaxis’ customizations are too extensive to easily move to Unreal 4), which in some ways has been rewritten to the point of being “unrecognizable,” and it’s much simpler to make that work on one platform than three or more at once.

QUOTE
“We talk about ‘What is the experience like on PC? What does the mouse feel like in this experience?’” The most obvious change resulting from those conversations is how the team is optimizing the interface to be mouse-and-keyboard friendly, moving UI elements and grouping them logically so that buttons we’re likely to press one after the other aren’t placed on opposite sides of the screen. “It will certainly be recognizable, but there isn't one UI widget that's the same,” said Solomon. We’ll also see more tactical information (such as detailed explanations of why your chance to hit is increased or decreased) displayed on the tactical interface, since Firaxis can now count on players sitting closer to their PC monitors and being able to read smaller text. And though Firaxis plans to add it in the future, the current plan is to launch without gamepad support.

QUOTE
Of course, the one thing that a console version of XCOM 2 wouldn’t be able to handle at all is modding, which Solomon and DeAngelis consider to be one of it’s biggest features and key to offering the kind of long-term replayablity and value people have come to expect from the makers of Sid Meier’s Civilization. We’ll have more on how Firaxis is embracing modders in XCOM 2 next week.

“People will see the gameplay source, all the scripting,” he promised. “This is the code that makes the game what the game is. Here's the editor and all the assets that went into this game.”

That’s all music to the ears of modders and fans of modding alike – especially since XCOM 2 will have Steam Workshop integration to make browsing, downloading, and installing the mods talented people create a one-click process. Sadly, we seldom see this level of support and open access to a game’s inner workings these days, so it’s terrifically refreshing to hear developers express such enthusiasm for embracing the mod community.

...

When asked what kind of XCOM 2 mods they expect to see, the team had a few ideas:

“We don’t have free-aiming. That will be one of the first mods, and that certainly will be fine,” said Solomon. “Maybe somebody will bring back time units,” he mused. “I'd be fine with that.”

Art Director Greg Foertsch had some words of encouragement for map makers: “If you want to make a completely static level, you can. If you want to make a basically completely procedural level - which is basically what our levels are in the game right now, that's 100% doable. It could be narrow; it could be square. It could be super big. And, again, it's super flexible. There's really no limit – you can do whatever you want. You could literally make an Enemy Unknown map.”

well, it's OK for me cause MGS 5 and fallout 4 will be the game for me to spend time until Feb 2016.

hopefully the game will be polish and fix all the existing bug (especially the line of sight and enemy unit patrol teleport bug in EU/EW) in the XCOM 2

What I've learnt from XCOM 1, they just changed the terrain, the monster's type and position for each stage. That's it.

So much for the game experience.

Am looking forward to this. Been playing XCOM Enemy Within on my tablet for sometime to catch up all the essential elements. (P.S. It's teeth grinding playing in Tablet due to graphic and performance)

ADVENT’s advanced technology has yielded a new unmanned threat in XCOM 2, Commander: the Sectopod. It’s an incredibly mobile, bipedal robot that is quite advanced when compared to the initial Sectopods seen in the first war. And, like other robotic units (such as the MEC and Andromedon), it is immune to fire, poison and mental attacks. Psi Operatives, take note!
user posted image

Dangerous area-of-effect and focused attack capabilities make the Sectopod a formidable foe to all of XCOM. Its Lightning Field attack, automatically triggered once an enemy comes into melee attack range, emits a forceful blast in a circular area surrounding the unit. Its Wrath Cannon is an extremely high-energy weapon that deals damage in a long line, and can penetrate multiple targets, but must be charged first. When you see its emitters charging, run and hide!
user posted image

The Sectopod is at its most dangerous when in High Stance mode – the Sectopod extends its legs and stands two stories tall, providing improved range and weapon reach. We should also note that buildings won’t necessarily protect you from the Sectopod, as it’s fully capable of simply walking through any obstacle in its path.

not really. EW had only a few 'story-missions' and some new enemies as well as tech/skills u can research / equip your squad. But these do not seem very relevant in XCOM2.

I'm pretty sure you can't because it's not the same game. Enemy Within was actually a DLC to the base game, Enemy Unknown.

Enemy Within/Unknown will have very little to do with Xcom 2 sorry. Why? Because for Xcom 2, the backstory basically puts you in a position where xcom 1 forces has all died.

Also for those saying xcom 2 = xcom 1 with better visuals, lol you all cannot be more wrong. Please don't simply assume. There are TONS of gameplay changes and balances, that alone already refines the combat to new heights in xcom 2. The story is also a lot more engaging this time, not like a side thing in xcom 1.

Downloaded the game and tried it out early morning before going off to work.

There seems to be some minor bugs at the start

1. When i just started the game, the resolution setting only had lower resolutions with only 1280 and 1368 available, this was fixed by exiting the game and relaunching it.

2. On my 970M GTX, i noticed that this game performs poorly compared to other titles. I can play shadow of mordor and MGS V with nearly all the settings up high at 60 FPS.
But this "tactical" game at max config just barely hits 40 FPS on idle, it dips below that when there is some action. I had thought with my RIG, it would be locked to 60 FPS. Mind you i had v-sync on which may have lowered the FPS count.

1. Snipers suck this time around. Grenadier is seriously good. Best weapon damage with 100% accuracy grenade area attack.
Also since there is no weapon fragments this time around, you can spam grenade all day every day, especially early on. Both weapon and grenade get corpse. If weapon attack only, sometime once in a while get loot.

2.Don't stand near cars during retaliation/terror mission. You will kena tiau kaw kaw.

Requirements for GPU quite high, surprisingly for a turn based game. On desktop this is still ok but on lappy it looks like you need a high-end gaming laptop to have decent performance. The recommended requirements is higher than a 970m.

There won't be a game ready driver for this, neither from nvidia or AMD.

Game is just simply quite unoptimized right now.
Played for a couple of hours, on a single 980Ti at 1440p. Cannot hold 60fps with game maxed out, getting dips to 40s in the base/avenger. During gameplay, the action cam will tank the framerates down to 30s for whatever reason, everything is so judder-filled even with Gsync enabled.

Shadow quality, post process effects (DoF, ironically), and AA are the culprits.

Game is still awesome regardless. Also, it needs to be on SSD otherwise the amount of texture streaming is just freaking unbelievable (oh and the loading... doh.gif).

Eh, they've never been known for well performing games neither on PC or consoles. So, I expected Xcom 2 to perform mediocre. Just disappointed they haven't learn much about the meaning of optimizing over the last decade.

Because despite performance issues, the game is insanely fun, intense, exhilarating and addictive. It's still playable, just not at a level where it should have been better.

*EDIT*
I'm spending more time creating characters for the char. pool than actually playing the game lol.

Shorter than the first game if you remove all the loading times.
With loading time, it's the same.

Finished Veteran Ironman with no loss of personnel whatsoever.

guys, how do I locate those alien black sites to stop the big A project? I tried to Google around but no one posted tips on this yet.

I already cleared a few but now there are not popping up.

Do I need to process in the main mission ? Haven't been doing the main mission because buff up my research and gear.

If you finish all the visible black sites, there won't be a new one until the timer say the construction completion is imminent and it appear.

The countdown still happen without the blacksites, only far slower.

about 20 hours or so.

if you remove all the loading time, it will be just around 12 - 14 hours, I think.
*
So its not just me that feel like the loading time takes a while, even on SSD. And also, the lag between turns and alien reaction when coming out of concealment

XCOM 2’s classes share similarities and themes with the soldier types from the first game, but the Sharpshooter, Ranger, Specialist and Grenadier are all very distinct from their predecessors. There are many ways to combine perks, gear and soldiers to create powerful squads, and you should experiment often to find new strategies and tactics—but if you’d like some straight-up advice, read on for my favorite builds of XCOM 2’s classes.

Remember, you can respec characters through the Advanced Warfare Center facility.

Regarding load times, here's a weird trick: press your caplocks key when loading.

Only works when loading after a fight, returning back to the avenger (which is where the bulk of loadtimes are).

Yes, weird indeed.

trying out XCOM Enemy Unknown (Steam sales) before deciding whether to buy XCOM 2

holy s**t it was a hard game, got my arse kicked so many times (doesn't matter if I had experienced in turn-based game like Civ 5 before), but those moment when you grit your teeth and complete a very difficult mission against all odds really is satisfying, will definitely buy XCOM 2 once I complete the first one (if I manage to finish it that is)

if you flashbang codex before attacking it, codex cannot clone for 4 turns at least. also the aim will be shit.

How's the review of you guys for this game?
Bear in mind I've played the original xcom and its series plus the last xcom that came out.
Hearing you guys saying its only lasting 24 hours kinda puts me off a bit.

A lot harder than the first, but more stuff to do. Campaign story a bit short tho and I am still having some performance issues.
Dropped fps, long loading times and freezing up a few times. Not even using any AA as well.

Just completed the game.

It was way more difficult than the previous XCom. However, this was much more entertaining. The maps doesn't seem to be recycled.

For those that don't know, Humble Bundle Monthly has XCOM2 at $12. The ringgit may be shit, but $12 only equates to RM55+. Steam isn't going to put this game on sale down that low until at least summer of 2017 (if not longer).

https://www.humblebundle.com/monthly

Just cancel your subscription before the end of next month so you don't get charged for the following month.

Oh and before asks if it includes the DLC - it doesn't.
Also the DLC is garbage, so don't even worry about it.

ya that is a good price since Steam won't discount as much for quite a bit (like a year), and you get a few more games out of it later. but this or Diablo III RoS.. hmm.gif

Different games, different genres.

You ask me, I'd go XCOM anyday. There's so many different ways to play it, it's not one dimensional.

Diablo 3 is basically a grind more to grind better, then grind better so you can grind more. I guess if you're in for that kind of experience, D3 does it like no other.

for Turn Based Strategy, no doubt XCOM is the most complex in terms of environment usage, however, gameplay wise it's pretty straight forward.

sneak in to correct position & range -> overwatch -> take 1st shot -> overwatch shoots when A.I scramble -> Take out rest, trigger next wave, rinse & repeat & pray you don't trigger the next wave before clearing out the current waves & pray the Alien Boss doesn't show up & wipe your bottoms unexpected.

i hardly use more creative tactics because they not just waste your moves but also brings more uncertainties & in short just not worth it.

but yes for Turn Based it can be creative but no reward for it. Enemies has very long range so no matter where you run they can still shoot at you unless they are melee or pistol.

Hard West is more fun too bad they only have ironman mode. Better story & voice acting too.

One thing that bores me is the typical Western Mass Effect Character design, voice acting & storyline.

I just need to watch the 1st scene to know the whole story.

Mordheim too complex if not would be also a fun game.

While I agree with the same standard tried and true tactics will always work best and there's not much reward to doing things differently... I gotta ask, where's the fun in that?

XCOM2 allows you to beat a stage in your own creative ways. Whether or not that's most effective is beyond the question.

The comparison was made to Diablo 3. Tell me how many ways can you play the game that it doesn't differ from grinding till no end. No matter how you want to change it up in D3, you still end up in some form of endless grinding. Hence grind more to grind better.

i understand there is a mid game save system that allows you to reload and retry, but what fun is that? the problem with the game is once your character dies he is gone. and this game is highly random, anything goes, unless you have very high level gears AI can get you unexpected.

so there is no reward playing the fancy way. unless you already finished the game and don't care about game progress just for fun.

worse case is with the count down thing that pressure players to make the best decisions.

most modern Turn Based game have camera issues, too often the background blocks your character or targets, and Xcom camera zoom is horrible sometimes they just don't show you what you want to see.

Wasteland gave lots of camera options.

I think you're mistaken what I'm saying, re-read my posts.

I was making the comparison between XCOM2 and Diablo 3, because svfn asked which game to buy. I gave a comparison to the 2 games because they are completely different in genres. I wasn't comparing XCOM2 to any other turn-based 4x game.

Also, you don't have to "re-load and re-try" just because it's there. Those are just rules bound by one's own mind state to always want to be "perfect" when in reality, the game isn't. It doesn't change the fact that you CAN still play the game in different ways whether it's first time through or the 10th time through.

One last time, Diablo 3 doesn't allow the user to play too differently than the intended design. It's made to hold your hand whether you're an experienced Diablo player or not.

It's made to hold your hand whether you're an experienced Diablo player or not.

if Xcom2 is what he wants, i suggest also purchasing Hard West series.

i would recommend Shadowrun but it's pretty short game compared to others.

but Shadowrun is a newbie friendlier game compared to Xcom & Hard West.

Hard West is on my wishlist, still waiting for good price as i am kinda cheapskate tongue.gif atm too many backlog already. XCOM 2 + other 5 games is the better value deal here obviously, but i had to go for RoS because nostalgia got me and i've waited quite a bit for it to go on sale devil.gif

from: https://xcom.com/news/xcom-2-long-war-2-mod...-missions-on-pc

Long War 2, the upcoming XCOM 2 mod for PC from Pavonis Interactive, presents a series of changes to the game’s campaign. One such change is the introduction of new tactical mission scenarios.

While engaging in operations around the globe, your XCOM soldiers will encounter new and more varied counter-operations from ADVENT forces. These new mission types support the expanded strategy layer within the Long War 2 mod and gives ADVENT new abilities like being able to spawn unlimited reinforcements during some missions.

Here are the new mission types:

Jailbreak – XCOM must infiltrate an ADVENT jail and rescue key Resistance members. Success increases the strength of the Resistance in that region.
Haven Defense – A variation on Retaliation missions where XCOM must defend Resistance members against an onslaught of ADVENT forces until the Skyranger can get into position for extraction.
ADVENT Base Assault – XCOM must deploy to and overtake a well-defended regional military headquarters.
Invasion – ADVENT attempts to retake a liberated region by assaulting a city center. XCOM must destroy a psionic relay that summons continuous reinforcements, then eliminate any remaining forces.
Rendezvous – A Faceless disguised as a member of the Resistance is detected as it goes to meet with its ADVENT handlers and XCOM must hunt it down.
ADVENT Supply Raid – XCOM must defend a supply convoy and its Resistance personnel from ADVENT attacks.
ADVENT Intel Raid – ADVENT attacks a Resistance listening post and XCOM must repel the attack.
ADVENT Recruiting Raid – ADVENT forces attack Resistance recruiters within a region. XCOM must extract those Resistance members.

Additionally, the Skyranger now takes time to arrive at a mission site for extraction in Long War 2, and ADVENT reinforcements have become more dangerous overall. Keep this in mind before deploying on one of these new missions, Commander.

Long War 2
By Pavonis Interactive (formerly Long War Studios)
http://www.pavonisinteractive.com

Long War 2 is a significant overhaul of XCOM 2 aimed at giving players the feel of running a worldwide guerrilla war against ADVENT and offering them a greater variety of strategic and tactical experiences.

Many of the mod's new mechanics are described ingame in the XCOM archives. Players are strongly encouraged to read those entries immediately after finishing Gatecrasher.

Features include:
1) A much longer campaign, running for 100 to 120 missions on average
2) Infiltration mechanics that require you to send out multiple squads at once
3) Manage resistance Havens and have resistance members scrounge for supplies, gather intelligence or recruit more people to your cause
4) Nine soldier classes: Sharpshooter, Shinobi, Ranger, Assault, Gunner, Grenadier, Specialist, Technical and Psionic (plus Sparks for DLC owners), each with unique secondary weapons
5) Two new weapon tiers, lasers and coilguns
6) Dozens of new enemies and smarter battlefield AI
7) ADVENT strategic AI that tries to counter your moves

Priced at RM 119 and 45gb. They weren't kidding when they say wotc could be Xcom 3.

So 45gb for the expansion alone or that's base+wotc=45gb

Seems the recommended requirement is 65gb so I guess the expansion is about 20gb. Sweet.. I guess I'm getting this at full prive

I cannot decide which one of the three faction classes I like most. Each of them utilize a different playstyle. I like to use the Reaper for those sneaky mission. You can basically walk under the enemies nose without raising an alarm. biggrin.gif

Is RM45 a good deal for the base game XCOM 2? It's from games planet UK.

I wonder how much would the steam sales for the ultimate collection be?
