I'm thinking of taking few month off to travel. Either that or I'll just quit my job. I don't have any commitment, and I have another income for me to get by in case I couldn't find a job(if I quit). This is my bucket list and if I don't do it now I'll definitely regret it in the future.

So far nobody in my company ever took sabbatical leave and its definitely not in company policy. But they do have study and exam leave.
I believe most company in Malaysia don't have sabbatical policy, even MNC.

So do share if you know any company in Malaysia who have sabbatical leave, and I appreciate any tips so I can present my application case better biggrin.gif
Anyway I'm the type of staff who never take MC and AL. So there's that. nod.gif

Yeap, taking sabbatical leave is not a norm yet in Malaysia, but if your relationship with your superior is good enough, I don't think its an issue for them to approve it. They will just treat it as an extended unpaid leave.

Quitting your current job is most inadvisable because the current job market constitutes large group of unemployed talents (from HP, BP Asia, Colgate, and etc.). It not that hard to find a person to replace you.

I think I conveyed my message alright and most people in workforce will understand it.
Unless you want to be politically correct.

Sabbatical leave are for those who worked a long period in the same company, traditionally taken at the 7th year, mostly to recharge an employee, with new perspective or skill. Some are paid leave depend on your company. I applied mine, 9 months paid leave soon, but I need to provide support to my office once a week. I in banking, sabbatical is common.

To be honest I don't really worried much about job market. I mean in term of income, I'm covered. Just that my current company is awesome, it would be such a bummer if I have to quit.
Anyway, I'm not taking the leave soon. Maybe later next year. I just want to 'plant' the idea early.

Wow! 9month paid leave brows.gif
Maybe common only for upper echelon? is it common for local bank too? Because I've never met anyone who actually took sabbatical leave, except few lecturer/professor. Maybe because I don't have any banker friend.

Certain companies have no problem on giving such leaves. In Malaysia, working in government sector do have sabbatical leave.

I am mid level staff only. Leave to lay egg and raise my chick. My big boss deodorant should have 1 year leave, whole family fully paid 1st class, presidential suite, butler 24/7, exotic holiday package one.

If your company allows it, it's great. But going on sabbatical by quitting probably isn't the best idea because leaving gaps in your employment history is such a red flag in Malaysia even though you have good reasons for it. My own observations/experiences is most HR expects continuous employment and will zoom in these areas why you weren't working. Saying you need re-charge doesn't exactly indicate you have toughen it out there, or saying you want to see the world implies you don't really care much about career and/or money. You have to tread carefully....

Actually that's what I'm aiming. I want to be excused but still have my job when I return.
Applying for sabbatical with paid is far fetched for me I think.

i think the culture of sabbatical leave is not in the dictionary of malaysian culture and employers. usually the management will not agree to that.

Maybe in a local company, but there are multinationals in Malaysia that practice it. My previous employer actually had it in their HR policy book and I know people who have taken sabbaticals before.

Check your company policy whether your position is guaranteed or not after your sabbatical ends. My ex company (MNC, 80k employees) HR policy very clearly says the position is NOT guaranteed. I know of one case a senior manager went for a year sabbatical, halfway through they hired a replacement. After he came back, he was given a couple of months to find another role within the organization or gtfo.
