guys, I got a job offer at Singapore and I'm going to start working next month. some serious questions here:

1. How to search for rooms? I'll be there with my girlfriend, and we prefer either 2 common rooms in the same house or rent the entire unit that comes with 2 rooms. Location: Bedok. Anyone knows how should I start searching and what's the current price range?

2. Let's say I was offered SGD3000. What is the net pay? Do we have to deduct EPF kindda thinggy? If yes, what is my final take-home pay?

3. I heard that rentals in Singapore is going to be reduced soon. Is this true?

actually my workplace will be Jurong East, but my girlfriend will be working at Bedok. I decided to stay in Bedok as I don't want my girlfriend to waste time on MRTs and buses. As for me, I don't mind the journey though.

We'll be going to Singapore next week and we'll start working next month. I guess we still have ample time to search for a good place to stay. smile.gif

Bedok to Jurong is quite a distance to cover.

smile.gif I know, but it is still within the same green-line MRT and I just don't wish her to take all the troubles of taking MRTs. blush.gif

There is no such thing as 'automatic PR conversion'. PR is and will always be a choice in any country. Some people will choose not to have to pay CPF as it is known to be difficult to withdraw even after old age.
Care to elaborate on this??
*
I think it means you won't get PR automatically even if you'd been working in Singapore for years. You have to apply for it. Some people prefer NOT to apply for PR as you have to pay CPF (like our EPF here in Malaysia).

Just that you have to know, Singapore's salary is lower compare to Malaysia.
*
I guess this is very true... some friend and my own experience:
Here: RM2800, there RM2400
Here: RM3000, there RM2800

But, your savings is 2x if you bring your excess cash back to Malaysia. Seeing the current weakening RM I guess soon the conversion rate will be 2.4 (heck, now is already 2.38!).

I'd signed an offer letter early May... the company is taking a very long time to process my employment pass and this morning they told me I could start working on the 23rd. Sigh... how come EP application takes so long? sad.gif

Wonder should i go down, stay and find jobs there?
*
Don't. Find a job through the Internet, only travel south when you got an interview offer. You can't rent a house/room without an employment pass, and it will cost you > SGD70 per day if you stay in budget hotels.

Moreover nowadays its not easy to secure a job in Singapore. sad.gif

Guys how do I apply for employment pass if I do not have an official certificate from my University? I will not have it until August but I already got an offer from a Singapore company and I would like to start working as soon as possible.
*
apply for the EP first, then get a signed document stating you'd finished your course and graduated successfully from your University. The MoM (Ministry of Manpower) is very very particular in terms of your tertiary education qualifications especially when you're applying for an EP.

Well, I just my EP this morning. Start working next Monday wink.gif

I'm going to Singapore to look for a job in an accounting firm next month =)

Where do you guys stay? What kind of room are u renting and how much is it?

Added on June 18, 2008, 2:50 pm

Hi yrh0413,

What are u working as there? Are people there friendly? where u staying? biggrin.gif
*
I'm staying near Marine Parade, at the East side of SG but I'm working at Jurong East =.=" Wake up at 5am, come out at 6am, reach office at 9am, reach home at 9pm dry.gif

I'm working as an ERP consultant, people here are not really friendly as most of them just focus on their own job. I miss the interaction and communication between colleagues in my old company sad.gif

I'm staying in a 1+1 HDB with my girlfriend, $1100 per month excluding all the bills.
