Hi all,

I just confirmed a job in Singapore. Reporting to work on 2nd January 2008.

I would like to know the process to apply the Employment Pass. Wondering, is that my responsibility or the employer responsibility?

Hope any M'sian that worked in Singapore can kindly share with me.

Thanks. rclxms.gif

ncs_malaysia,

Did you have to go to Sgp once for interview and another time to do medical checkup and a 3rd time to do work permit? Then you need to apply so many days off to do these things? And spend so much for travelling to Sgp too?

Kindly share. Thank you. smile.gif

they will give u a temporary working permit...
so u can travel around easily

oic, start work first, then do medical check-up. OK, understand now. You no need to attend 2nd interview? The difficult thing will be what if you fail medical check-up. Congrats.

1. how long hv you worked in Sgp?
2. Do you work on Saturdays?
3. How is the working culture in Sgp?

Bro, may i know what they ask in Phone interview?  hmm.gif

I'm currently work at Penang and may difficult to go down singapore if there is any interview... How to solve this?  hmm.gif Hopefully most company allow to do the interview through phone.
*
You don't have much choice... Say, if they really arrange for a 2nd interview, it won't be conducted thru phone anymore. Most employers will want you to go there so that they can see you physically.

bbmars & wakabushi,

Do you guys want to meet up again? Please look at your pm. TQ.

Also one last thing is that once you come here, you will be trapped. First, you say you wanna stay a few years just to get money. Then a few years later, you get tired of the bullshit here, and want to move back. But you realise there is nothing waiting back in msia. All your friends have moved on, and have their own lifes and friends . You have nothing left, all you have is your work in Singapore. Then you will be miserable like me. Stucked between a rock and a hard place
I don't think that is a good reason for not coming back to Msia. You can always make new friends.

Whether you are trapped is really up to how you want your life to be.  In the 1st place, you have chosen to work in SG... just like in other major cities in the world.. In London too.. there are stresses...  I read from ST  on Sunday life style, ang mo comes to SG to work and they also mentioned something stressful working in their own country.. Yes, that's why they take holiday and went away from their cities into the country side.. Likewise in SG, they venture out because, to them is so convenient to fly around.. just get out of the country... but for those n ot so fortunate and low income people, where to go?

As a local, amidst those problems, not only foreigners face, at least you have a choice to return to your own country.. We have no where to go.. and we learn to adapt unless we can migrate... There is really nothing left for us given teh country size with nothing but PEOPLE...  But if you country doesn't really feel like home.. I think you have to think and find a way out for yourself, its yourn personal decision.. No point feeling trapped in SG.. Ultimately, some make it good in SG, some not.. there is no right and wrong about this.. its both sides of the story..

Stress are every where.. its only how you learn to manage, not get used to, numb maybe? hope it won't get the better of you... Another thing, don't think earning other people's money is easy (referring to general, not SG), it will never be... the labour market is getting tight and equally if not hihgly competitive... Given the China/India effect, the way SG goes... its not going to be any lesser.. So people coming into SG from less or not so competitive environement will feel the heat. Worse, just annnounced a finding on the most expensive places i nthe world, SG had jumped up >10places to 9th... so can imagine how life will be?

However, there many jobs are that less stressful.. However, if you choose a job that pays you 5K... well don't expect to be paid for sitting down taking your own time carrying out your job...  Its a known fact, the world situation has changed, if they pay you 2K, be prepared that they will squeeze 3K out of you... in order to make that 2K worth spending...
*
I agree. Even in MYS the job market is getting very tight and every year thousands of grads are unemployed. It's not a trap in Sgp.

For those already working in Sgp, how many percent of your monthly salary constitute the 13th month salary?

hey if i want to work in singapore, plan to take ACCA? can kah? what is minimum for degree? second upper? or first class :S

Whatever you plan to take.. ACCA, degree, etc you better take it first then you may consider where you want to work. It is not so much what you take but your results and also your work experience.

bbmars, thanks for your lengthy explanation. I got what you mean. Btw, is it stated in your employment contract how many months 13th month salary you will be getting?

wakabushi, is it in your contract?

Actually, unless you are on contract, especially for senior positions, which has it stated, better ask during the interview when the potential employer let you ask questions, I mean general questions. Please do not ask right at the beginning, don't screw up... its only after all depths and details.. the more important thing then you ask... its still important... don't just presume, else in the end, you will loose out..

Some of you may be paid as a package, so you will get it in say $/pa... all will be stated and inclusive... so beware.. of what is being negotiated..  but so far, as a local, don't face much problem... not sure how you guys fare?  in the past, my former company employed indian from India on employement pass >1.5K (15-20yrs ago), theirs too includes the 13 month...
*
The 13th month is like a contractual bonus-lar in Malaysia. Some MNCs in Malaysia do have that element.

1. In Singapore, got two-room flat or not, just like those low-cost flats in Malaysia? And how much would be the rental? I understd that HDB is 3-room flat, right?

2. If we work in Sgp, does it make sense to still use Maxis phone line? How much is the phone rate for Sgp phone operators such as Singtel or M1 (what's the other one called?) especially international phone roaming. Would using Skype-enabled phone be cheaper for calling Msia and Sgp?

Yes, they have even 1-room flat. But these types of flat are usually for those poor ppl. You can refer here Types of HDB flat and median rental price per locations. Just one thing, some of the locations, the rental could be much higher than what is reported by HDB.

No, you better subscribe a new line in Singapore as their postpaid is considered cheaper if compare to M'sia 1-to-1 without conversion. I'm not sure about Singtel or M1, but I, myself use Starhub (line is not very good-like Digi). A lot of packages you can choose to suit yourself. I subscribe with free IDD 018. You can check on their respective service providers website for detailed charges Starhub, SingTel, M1. Just always remember to read carefully on their T & C as they have alot of charges, even free incoming call!! doh.gif  I never use Skype before (pardon for my ignorant...), so I can't tell you. IINM, u can call through MSN, right?
*
free incoming call? I tot all incoming call is free on the receiver's side, are you implying that there are service providers that charges the phone receiver for incoming calls?

Washabushi, 5 cents per min for local as well as international? You mean if I am in US, and I call back to Sgp/Msia using Singtel, it's also 5 cents per min? If so, that's cheap.

For the hp package.
If your job is not the type will keep receive the incoming call and you plan to call out a lot. Singtel prepaid is the most worth package to use if u using Hot 100 even compare with postpaid.

You pay SGD28 only for Hot 100( normally I pay SGD24.5 or SGD25) and you get SGD72 dollar for local charges and SGD28 for IDD international call.
The calling rates also cheaper than postpaid if most of your call is after 8pm because it only charges 8cent per minutes compare 16cent per minutes on postpaid line.
If you make call on day time before 8pm, the rate is same with postpaid which is 16cents.

so imagine SGD72 can call for how long? My gf call me using this package and normally the SGD25 can last for 1 month or more with  average she call me 30 mins per night.
My postpaid SGd30 with free IDD only come with 80 minutes free call and 500 sms and free incoming call.

Dun forget about the SGD28 IDD international call as well. Just add 019 to any international number you want and u will call it using local rate which is 8cents per minutes after 8pm( b4 8pm is 16cents or more). So u can keep contact with your family in msia quite often. The weekend rate for this package is 8cents for whole days as wel.

However, this Hot 100 value need to be top up every 50 days, if not your value inside will be deleted.Normal prepaid in singapore has life span 6 months compare maxis 30 days with top up of SGD10 dollar.

Another benefit of postpaid is you get free caller id display, postpaid normally give u free callerID on first 3 months but charge u SGD5 after that.

lol, i seems help singtel promote their hot 100.

cktwai, so we need open maybank account in singapore to let us use the sg maybank2u?Currently I am using remittance services and everytime they charge SGD10, if got other method which can save money I will like to know. Last time I ask singapore maybank on the remittance and service fee they charge is SGD30, so need to know more about the method you use. Thanks.

Jimmy,

I dont quite get what u mean by this sentence -

You pay SGD28 only for Hot 100( normally I pay SGD24.5 or SGD25) and you get SGD72 dollar for local charges and SGD28 for IDD international call.

Btw, I check with Maybank in Msia, and the person advised to just use their ATM machine and the money will convert using the prevailing exch rate. No fees imposed.
Try and see if it works or not and then please let me know.

Regards

Hi darren,
you pay SGD28 ( suggest price ) for HOT 100 top up card which contain the value of SGD72 for local call/sms and SGD28 value for IDD, international call/sms. So total is SGD100 worth value, thats y it call HOT 100. Sounds unbelievable right?

About CPF contribution, does non-PR need to contribute ? Actually if contribute I feel better because the employer contribute too - so your remuneration/benefit is more, right?

WASHABUSHI/Jimmy - does your employer deduct CPF contribution? What about Socso? Mind if share normally how many % of your salary constitute the variable portion (I'm not talking abt the 13th month)?
