anyone know any shop displaying aw 13?
really wan to feel the unit before make the decision between xps13 or aw 13..
thanks

I can tell you the keyboard is stiffer than those XPS13 island keys, great for gaming.
The touchpad is bad for 2018 laptop, but no problem again for gamers using mouse.

In your opinion, is it worth to buy alienware amplifier rather than upgrade/replace my laptop? Running on gtx860 only. Some games really cant be played and on lowest settings.  mad.gif

If you don't mind getting used parts, those unlocked i5 PC running cheap DDR3 will definitely be faster than your laptop + AGA. AFAIK your laptops's i5 is only dual core right?

I think most of the people complaining are running on GTX1070 and 1080. The GTX1060 should be much cooler since my 13R3 is fine with i7-7700HQ and GTX1060.

What are the temps you getting with your config bro??
*
Non-aircond vs aircond

i7-7700K undervolt 80/70
GTX 1060 75/70

Probably the 1060 doesn't clock as high but it didn't go into crazy temperature or shutdown. I probably can repaste and get better temperature but doen't feel the need to.

I only undervolt -0.12v. Are you testing in aircond room? That idle should be with the fan off.

Then my temperature is pretty identical to you, 80c at room temperature during gaming load.

The gist is the 3 screw design doesn't hold down the heat sink properly for good contact.
Also the thermal pad is crap, it's typical crap nearly all big notebook manufacturers apply.

*
Sad to know Alienware can screw up such a great laptop with poor heatsink design's precision.

Gonna be a workstation and only part time gaming rig  biggrin.gif
So it's configured with Windows 10 Pro.

Made a good choice getting the 6 cores as a workstation.

Dell technician quite nice, he offer me either got better quality thermal paste & he can help me to re-pasted. He also advice me, if overheat still happen after re-pasted, complaint to Dell & asking for 1 to 1 exchange.

note: Dell using Shin-Etsu Microsi Thermal paste.

I guess that’s the price premium you pay for AW.

*

Looking at the latest Alienware R5. The thermals (when it is working well) seems to hover around 80c underload for CPU (GTX1060 it seems).

Very tempted to get one  drool.gif  drool.gif . So far cant find any details about GTX1070 thermals pair with i7  hmm.gif
*
That's non aircond room right? My AW13 with less powerful i7-7700HQ is cooler than that without re-paste.

Thank you for your comments. After some consideration, I'll go with the entry model (i5-8300 and 1060) and just upgrade to 60Hz Gsync. I don have a lot of time for gaming, just wanna play some story campaign in FPS games (COD, Battlefield), so don need to spend RM8k on sth i don utilize hehe.

Thanks again

I found this article, really no commend  sweat.gif  sweat.gif  sweat.gif

Anything under these figures will be normal for the Alienware 15 R4 / 17 R5.

The whole point of using such thick laptop is to have good thermal performance, if Dell decided those are the new normal temperature then I'm not going to recommend future AW to anyone. Those are ridiculous temperature on such thick laptops.

and I don't think Dell will allow me to get another replacement again .... hahaha

If they clearly state 95C is a new norm for peak temperature, then yeah you won't get your replacement hehe.

You're right! Starting to think it is better to put a high clockspeed quad-core in gaming laptop for now.

Very cool idea with the thermal tape, but the chip won't get heat up by the heatsink instead right?

Well I am happy with my AW13R3. New BIOS released by the way.

Me too. I’m reluctant to update the bios since it is working fine.
