Joystiq asks EA about the spyware, the response:
QUOTE The advertising program in Battlefield 2142 does not access any files which are not directly related to the game. It does not capture personal data such as cookies, account login detail, or surfing history. BF 2142 delivers ads by region. The advertising system uses a player's IP address to determine the region of the player, assisting to serve the appropriate ads by region and language. For instance, a player in Paris might be presented with ads in French. The information collected will not be repurposed for other uses. Battlefield 2142 also tracks "impression data" related to in-game advertisements: location of a billboard in the game, brand advertised, duration of advertisement impression, etc. This information is used to help advertisers qualify the reach of a given advertisement. |

Battlefield: 2142 Patch Asks You To Leave System Open To Hackers via Kotaku.
Hey, even more reason to just love Battlefield 2142, EA and DICE. Sure, they are infecting you with spyware... I'm sorry, a piece of software that allows them to more accurately monitor in-game ad usage. Sorry, even worse! But hey, it's just spyware... not exactly like they're leaving the backdoor open to hackers. Well, except they are. According to Hearless Gamer, EA has already released a patch for BF:2142 today that requires you to uninstall a critical Windows Update patch. What does that patch do? "A security issue has been identified in the Windows Kernel that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it." Gosh, what will EA do to their loyal Battlefield: 2142 fans next? Decapitate them by propelling the DVD out of a cannon at their necks? -Florian Eckhardt |

So here I quote..
Actually if you research a bit (google for "KB922 problem") you will find that this patch does in fact break many different programs and Microsoft has already released patches for that: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924867/ Also, as for programs using kernel functions, lets do some quick checks, shall we ? C:\>dumpbin /imports c:\WINDOWS\system32\notepad.exe | findstr /i kernel KERNEL32.dll C:\>dumpbin /imports c:\WINDOWS\system32\mspaint.exe | findstr /i kernel KERNEL32.dll Bound to KERNEL32.dll [424377D2] Fri Mar 25 03:30:42 2005 kernel32.dll is not the actual kernel, but it certainly uses kernel functions to load and initialize stuff. I wont even talk about ntdll here. Good luck finding programs that do NOT use the kernel that are not viruses written in assembler. The irony of this whole thing is that if EA had not put that slip of paper in the box, no one would have been concerned, but they went ahead and did the decent thing of letting people know what was going on, and people are all up in arms, claiming it's spyware, and an invasion of their privacy. What EA is doing here is LESS invasive than most websites you gladly visit. They don't tell you beforehand that they collect and store data on your PC through cookies and other such means. That, too. |
