I can't stay at home for another 6 months anymore. I need to find some other job before GLP resumes. It's a good program but only thing the timing is bad.

The link did not say which plant exactly is closing. How do you know it's Sarawak? I knew it the 2 weeks holiday in December had smtg to do with the economic problem.
*
"In total the company is halting all manufacturing operations from December 20 until January 2 2009. Pay for all its executives, board-level directors and other senior management is being cut. One of the three hard drive manufacturing plants in Navanakorn, Thailand will close as will one of its two media substrate facilities in Sarawak, Malaysia.

There will be a reduction in the number of temporary workers and a reduction in shift overtime, and workers who leave will not be replaced. This is intended to reduce manufacturing work hours by up to 20 per cent. The capital spending budget for fiscal 2009 will be cut from $750m to approximately $500m.

These actions should be complete by the end of March, 2009 and will result in total charges of approximately $150m but will save $150m a year."

I think u should think about another company..... maybe First Solar at KHTP
As rite now WD Media situation is not really stable as S01 closing down and 1 plant in Thailand will follow soon.
Some of those Sarawakian that been given VSS will given choices to transfer Johor & Penang. That's mean workforce will overload in this 3 plant (PNG-2 plant) (JOHOR-1 plant).

The vacancy in other sites are now offered to those who will be VSS-ed from affected sites. Meaning, they will close hiring from public.

Since sarawak mentioned that WD has skilled workers. Those "skilled workers" dont need to rely on WD for employment since they have "special skills". Its the unskilled who will suffer more.

The closure is sad indeed, all the suppliers also will be affected. thats another whole lot of people and businesses that may go bust.

they're skilled workers because they work in a specialized, high-tech company ... i guess THE only high-tech company in Sarawak?

these workers may not be able to find similar/equivalent job there itself, so it's a waste too

i guess it's really a matter of time before they chopped off the Kuching factory. It doesn't make any sense at all for Komag to maintain another site all the way at Kuching which will cost more in terms of transportation.
The writting has already been on the wall for the Kuching factory ever since WD bought over Komag. All the equipment moving etc. Also Komag always had higher LOH as compared to WDM and costs reductions is needed. Malaysia is lucky because Thailand is in a mess otherwise we would see wide scale layoffs in the drive factory in Msia.
