US$42 x 4(3.x) = RM 168 max. Not expensive for a upgrade. With so little amount of money can get a original windows, not bad. But too bad my 6400 used Intel GMA, not support the auro glass effect...

Stated can use but if RAM low, sure will lag a bit. Unless I upgrade to 2GB RAM else I won't go for Vista at the moment.

out of topic, i'm sure some of the users have reformatted their laptop. my ques, do u guys still keep the dell media direct software? its only function is boot up the laptop to watch movie or play songs, right? how useful is it to u guys? thought want to use the 1.5gb space to add up to my c drive only. thanks
*
It is useless to me. I format my hd and del all the partition to free up the space.

My cooling method is easy, just place a stand fan beside the table, use book to lift up the laptop, then turn on the fan. Use this method when bt overnight. The laptop fan never on because the temp is low.

Long time I didn't use the fan method because I didn't bt anything so far. If I didn't remember wrong, the temp average is around 3x for everything. I'll try to turn on the fan and take a screen shot tonight.

Why you wan the fan to run all the time? At first I also want the fan to run at least min speed but later on I found that it is very waste battery/electrical and also very noisy.

Just set it in the option. Example like you set it to run at min speed when cpu reach 40c, then run at max speed at 50c.

Which operating mode to select?

Got 4 on the main page.

Choose the "Automatic temperature control" on the main page. Then go into the option, and choose the temperature for each components.

Some model have 2 fans so there is a 2nd fan status. 9400 got 2 fans, each one at one side, 6400 should put 2 fans also, to cool down the hdd...

This is the temperature I got after I turn on the stand fan for just 10 minutes. You can notice the temp drop very fast. Just compare above and below temperature. Especially for the hdd.

I'm going to on my 6400 for bt tonight. Will take another screen shot tomorrow morning.

This is the temperature I got after one whole night bt. The temperature never increase but just drop only. Good for those who use laptop to bt a lot, won't hurt the laptop by heat and also can cool the room a bit.

I hope what you heard is not true. We can get dell's product so cheap is because it does not go through the middle-man like other brand. If dell do it like other brand, their price may increase.

First of all many thanks to all 6400 users to kindly answer my questions, really appreciate it  notworthy.gif  icon_rolleyes.gif

1. I think I'd most probably go with 80GB HDD and get myself another external one to be safe then.  thumbup.gif Buying an external drive should be safer than upgrading the laptop's HDD, no? Btw, I have the Nov booklet from Dell that's valid till Dec 4 and they're offering T5500, but when I check online it's T2050? Also, I couldn't find the option to customise the graphic card online.. sweat.gif

2. Yeap you're right they will partition 20GB to C and the rest to D drive, but you can choose if you want 40/60GB in C drive as well. Since it's really easy like you guys say then I'll attempt to do it myself. I can ask for help here if anything goes wrong biggrin.gif

3. I definitely can wait since I'll be leaving next February, just thought of getting one now and play around with it first. I thought about PC fair because I heard they usually throw in extra stuff to attract people to buy? And it's good to look around at other brands like HP and Toshiba as well, though their prices are usually above my budget unfortunately. So for PC fairs they only accept cash huh? If that's the case then I'll most probably order through phone/online.

One last thing, my mom in US just e-mailed me and asked if this Toshiba system is worth it. After conversion it's quite cheap ($750=RM2850, offer=$650=RM2470). Compared to 6400, would this be a better deal?

Toshiba Satellite
*
1) Call dell and ask for the processor.
2) Partition it yourself, it is pretty easy.
3) PC fair do accept credit card. My parent just help me bought one for my gf last pc fair.

Compare the spec with dell, see which one better is getting the same spec. And also the outlook of the laptop.

Hi, is there any way to check if my laptop fan is working? How to check temperature of the internals? I'm a bit worried cause I never hear the fan and the bottom of the laptop is very hot.
*
Use I8kfanGUI to check the fan status, turn the fan to medium and high speed see whether the fan is working or not. If it is no response, complain to dell. If it is, means that the BIOS detected your system still cold and no need to on the fan.

Last time I'm having the same problem as you. Under a same network, some pc/laptop can connect in but some cannot. At last the problem solved after I reset the modem then can already.
