Ignore the resell value. Which one is more sturdier ? Is FC for spectra 5 bad, same goes to the spare parts? I personally prefer spectra 5 but I'm afraid of the maintenance cost. If the FC a is just slightly higher, I'm fine with it.
Please advice
Proton Saga or Kia Spectra 5

Looking to buy a second hand car, either proton saga 2010/2013 or Kia spectra 5 2010 ( NOT KIA SPECTRA )

A owner told me before that its really hard to source parts for old KIA cars. Also it is really hard to change parts. Sometimes have to dismantle entire engine to change anything. So if the formen is not experienced, during reassembling, he might miss something and you will end up with another problem. But I'm not sure for 2010 model. Best would be, if you know any formen or workshop owner, pay a visit and ask about frequent wear and tear and the repair cost.

I wonder if any of them drives spectra5 anyway... I own 1 2008 CBU, it shares the same part as Forte 4 speed. So take a look at Forte forum and you can see their comments. as for my 7 years of usage, I've changed the a/c compressor(original Kia RM1100 / Recon RM400) and 4 Ignition coils(RM200) apart from normal maintenance. FC ranges from 9-10L/100km for city and 7L/100km for highway, not that much different from Saga FLX as I have one at home as well. |

I used to own a Kia Sephia. Those old korean cars, pls stay away....your spare part maintenance and ease of parts availabilty will be more pricier and difficult compared to Saga. You can easily find tons of saga parts from half cut shops compared to rare models like Spectra 5 when you need it.

Spectra 5 ex-owner here as well. I have tested the 1.3 Saga before when I was surveying for a car at that time (1.6 not available yet). Easy decision, can forget about the Saga in term of almost all aspects, except the price which was much cheaper.
The S5 is really a good car to drive around. Solid chasis and suspension. Similar to the owner above, the only part broke down during my 5 years ownership was the injection coil, which was changed for about RM200 at Naza Kia service center. Ohter than that, only normal 10k maintenance. FC is similar to the other 1.6 NA C-segment cars. Kia parts are very easy to get nowadays. I broken the interior door handle of my S5 previously, and they can get it the next day. Just imagine, broken handle is not something you change everyday, and yet they have the part ready, some more it's made in Korea and cost me less than RM100. For those who said that Korean cars are lousy, bad fuel consumption, difficult to get parts, etc., I bet that they have either never driven a Korean car, or a Korean model 10 years ago when the brand was just started to produce their own car with their own engineering, not a rebadge like some others. So my advise is, yes, go for the S5 if it's still in good condition, properly maintained and come with all the service records. Since you are considering a second hand car, the resell value is not something you need to consider. Ya, talking about the resell value, I lost about RM35k after driving it for 5 years. How much will a C-segment car from other brands loose after 5 years? Don't tell me it's only RM20k. Very likely it's much more than RM35K even for the Japanese brands This post has been edited by atah: Mar 13 2015, 04:14 PM |

Spectra 5 MUCH WAY BETTER THAN SAGA!!!! I owned a 2009 till now, no problem at all!
FC 8.5L/100km due to it CVVT (like VTEC) and more stable than Saga if travel outstation. |
