Squid-inspired 'invisibility stickers' could help soldiers evade detection in the dark

user posted image

QUOTE
researchers will present their work today at the 249th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS).  "Soldiers wear uniforms with the familiar green and brown camouflage patterns to blend into foliage during the day, but under low light and at night, they're still vulnerable to infrared detection," explains Alon Gorodetsky, Ph.D.

"We've developed stickers for use as a thin, flexible layer of camo with the potential to take on a pattern that will better match the soldiers' infrared reflectance to their background and hide them from active infrared visualization."  To work toward this effect, Gorodetsky of the University of California at Irvine (UCI) turned to squid skin for inspiration. Squid skin features unusual cells known as iridocytes, which contain layers or platelets composed of a protein called reflectin.

The animal uses a biochemical cascade to change the thickness of the layers and their spacing. This in turn affects how the cells reflect light and thus, the skin's coloration.

China has made a significant breakthrough on the development of the blades used in aircraft engines. The technology can be applied to other new models for military use, reports the Chinese-language Guancha Syndicate.

According to China Aviation News, Southern China Aviation Industry Aviation Industry Group, affiliated with China Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC), announced the results of the advanced single crystal blade development on March 18.

A blade to an aviation engine is like a major organ to the human body. As aircraft models evolved, the development of blades has gradually shifted to a single crystal blade, which in China was previously purchased from overseas.

In 2013, AVIC decided to focus on the research and development of this technology. After countless experiments, the research team achieved a satisfying result through testing different temperatures, materials, and module tools adjustment.

The first prototype production passed examinations and the yield rate was 40% higher than those outsourced from overseas, the report said.

NATO leaders balk at Russia's threat to nuke warships

user posted image

QUOTE
BUCHAREST, Romania -- Britain's defense secretary says NATO members Romania and Britain will not be intimidated by threats against members of the military alliance.  "Neither Romania nor Britain will be intimidated by threats to its alliance or its members," Defense Secretary Michael Fallon said Monday during a one-day visit.

His remarks came days after Russia's ambassador to Denmark, Mikhail Vanin, said in a published report that Danish warships could become targets for Russian nuclear missiles if the Danes join the alliance's missile defense system. Bases are planned in the southern Romanian town of Deveselu and in Poland.

"I do not think Danes fully understand the consequences of what happens if Denmark joins the U.S.-led missile defense. If this happens, Danish warships become targets for Russian nuclear missiles," Vanin was quoted as saying by the newspaper Jyllands-Posten on Saturday.  Should Danes join "we risk considering each other as enemies," he added.

Russia to Begin Serial Production of 5th Generation T-50 Fighters in 2016

user posted image

KOMSOMOLSK-ON-AMUR (Sputnik) – Russia plans to start production of fifth-generation T-50 fighter jets in 2016, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said Monday.
As of now, the United States is the only country whose Air Force includes a fully-operational fifth-generation jet fighter.

“We have plans to deliver the first series of fifth-generation fighter jets next year,” Borisov said during a visit to the Komsomolsk-on-Amur aviation plant in the country’s Far East, where Russia is developing the PAK-FA fighter jet.

Borisov added that four more prototypes will be available for tests this year, after manufacturers said last month that five fighters were carrying out test flights.

Sukhoi, the Russian company behind the T-50 project, also plans to produce an export version of the fighter for India.
Fifth-generation military jet aircraft incorporate stealth profiles, advanced avionics and all-digital flight systems.

The US Air Force's F-22 Raptor, introduced in 2005, remains the only combat-ready fifth-generation fighter in existence.

Shaheen-3 missile to stop Indian second strike: Gen Kidwai

user posted image

QUOTE
Shaheen-3, Khalid Kidwai, Nuclear capability, India, Pakistan, Andaman and Nicobar Island, Nuclear weapon, NSG, Carnegie International Nuclear Policy Conference, US, SPD, Nuclear program,  Pakistan has developed the 2,750 km range Shaheen-3 missile to prevent India from gaining a second-strike nuclear capability from Andaman and Nicobar islands, said Lt General (retd) Khalid Kidwai, former head of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons division.

Addressing the Carnegie International Nuclear Policy Conference 2015 in Washington DC, Kidwai said one sided policies of the United States favouring India – like the NSG exemption for the nuclear deal – have been a destabilizing factor for South Asia. These US policies are unhelpful and unacceptable to Pakistan, he said.

Armata prototypes: The Russian Army’s experimental tanks

Armata prototypes: The Russian Army’s experimental tanks
Object-477 Molot (Hammer)

In the mid-1980s, engineers from several Soviet design bureaus decided to create a fighting machine with an unmanned turret. The new project compiled various proven and reliable service solutions and new unusual layouts of various components.

The “Hammer”, according to its developers, was to have the most powerful cannon of that time; the 152-mm cannon, with impressive firepower for a weapon of this calibre, – 34/35 shots using various types of ammunition.

Sergei Suvorov, an expert on armoured military vehicles, spoke about the unique features of Object 477 in an interview with the Zvezda TV Channel, saying, “Object-477 should not be considered as just a tank with an unmanned turret. It differed from the mass produced battle tanks in the fact that its crew was stationed below the roof of the body. The roof itself contained just a cannon with an automatic loader, a sighting complex and other equipment and systems used for reconnaissance purposes and to ensure firing accuracy.”

Rubin (Ruby) on Pavel Isakov’s frame – Object-775

The new trend in weaponry at the beginning of the 1960s was the creation of rockets – and their universal application. This trend did not bypass armoured vehicles either.

In 1964, a group of engineers at the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant headed by Pavel Isakov created the first Soviet “missile tank”, which was code named Object-775.

Conceptually, this tank was not able to fire conventional tank shells. Instead of cannon, this fighting machine was equipped with a rifled barrel – a 125-mm missile launcher, from which were launched the guided missiles Typhoon and unguided rockets Bor, from the Rubin missile complex.

Paul Isakov’s “missile tank” significantly raised the chance of winning battles, given the series of non-standard innovations used to design it. One of these was the hydro-pneumatic suspension, by means of which the already squat silhouette of this tank could “hug the ground”, thus reducing its height even more.

Despite the fact that this squat “missile tank” project never saw mass production, for the tank builders, a whole new area opened up in the development of these machines. A short time later, “tank destroyers” emerged, which differed from the earlier heavy machinery, with their compact size and powerful weaponry.

Object 640 – Chyorniy Orel (Black Eagle)

The greatest attention in the modern history of armoured vehicles was garnered by a tank with a gas turbine engine. Object-640, which first appeared in the mid-1990s, could be airlifted to any required location.

Object-640 also ranked high in terms of self-defence systems – in addition to its hefty modular armour and the “Cactus” dynamic protection system, the tank was also equipped with the active protection system Drozd-2, capable of shooting down incoming guided anti-tank missiles or rocket-propelled grenades launched from portable grenade launchers.

Armoured military vehicles expert Sergei Suvorov explained why the tank never went into mass production.

“Despite the many modern design solutions used in the creation of the new tank, Object-640 never went into mass production. The reason was that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation had decided not to use gas turbine engines in tanks <...> the tank’s turret, with its renowned silhouette, was standardized, and subsequently was installed on the chassis of a variety of tanks, including units in other countries.”

The innovations developed in the Object 640 project virtually opened up the entire world arms market. The tank itself never went into service, but made its irreplaceable contribution to the construction of a new main battle tank – the Armata, which will soon be delivered to the Russian armed forces.”

The article is abridged. First published in Russian by NTK Zvezda.

Russian tracked armored vehicle Kurganets-25

The tryout in Alabino, just outside Moscow, featured a group of partially camouflaged armored vehicles rolling past. The Kurganets-25 provides a high degree of commonality with the new T-14 Armata heavy battle tank, whose photo earlier appeared online, Military-informant.com reported.

The Kurganets-25 will evolve into various models, gradually replacing BMP and BMD and MT-LB and other types of tracked armored platforms. It will have modular armor that can be upgraded for specific threats, a 2A42 30 mm cannon, and four Kornet-EM anti-tank guided missile launchers.

The Kurganets-25 is fully amphibious, propelled in the water by two water-jets at the rear of the hull.

The vehicle uses a new technology for amphibious operation which increases the speed in the water up to 10 km/h.

The vehicle will be equipped with automatic fire control system which is able to automatically select targets.

Standard equipment of the Kurganets-25 could include a thermal imager, eye-safe laser rangefinder, GPS / inertial navigation system and computerized fire control system.

Japan prepares to commission Izumo helicopter destroyer

user posted image

Preparing for a potential conflict with the PLA Navy over the disputed East China Sea, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force is ready to commission its most advanced helicopter destroyer, Izumo, on March 25, reports our Chinese-language sister paper Want Daily.

Developed by Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries, Izumo is the lead ship in its class of helicopter destroyer. It can carry seven anti-submarine warfare helicopters and search-and-rescue helicopters.

With five helipads on the flight deck, five helicopters can take off or land simultaneously. The ship can carry 400 troops and 50 trucks for amphibious operations. The ship has neither a ski-jump nor a catapult to launch fixed-wing aircraft but it can still become a light aircraft carrier after Japan receives F-35 Lighting fighters from the US, which have vertical take-off and landing ability.

Japan also plans to purchase 20 P-1 and P-3 patrol planes to carry out missions against Chinese submarines in the East China Sea.

China meanwhile recently launched its 25th Type 056 corvette. The vessel is also the seventh Type 056A developed for anti-submarine warfare in the East and South China seas.

Gen Nakatani, Japan's defense minister, said at the graduation ceremony of the National Defense Academy of Japan on March 22 that he had taken note of the fact that China's military budget has grown by 10% annually for past five years.

Russia’s Top-Secret Battle Tank Captured on Video

Even though the tanks were partially camouflaged to hide their silhouette and size, the seven-track design was clearly visible.

Russia's next-generation Armata main battle tank, which due to be shown to the public at the 2015 Victory Day parade in Moscow, will undergo state testing in 2016

The tanks apparently feature a new generation 125mm extended-length smoothbore gun.

Also taking part in the May 9 parade in Moscow will be advanced Kurganets 25 and Bumerang tracked armored vehicles, Taifun-U armored cars, Coalitsia-SV self-propelled artillery pieces and Kornet-D missile complexes.

After five years of development, the Uralvagonzavod Research and Production Corporation finalized manufacture of the first batch of Armata tanks and heavy personnel carriers. They have been included in Russia’s 2015 defense order.

Russia's T-14 Armata to Challenge the U.S. M1 Abrams in a Future War

user posted image

Russia's new and futuristic-looking main battle tank, the T-14 Armata, gives the Ground Forces of the Russian Federation (or the Russian army) a tank that might be the equal of the proven U.S. M1A2 Abrams in a future conflict.

The T-14 will feature several radical improvements that are a first in tank warfare. This Russian beast has an unmanned remotely controlled turret armed with a new 125 mm 2A82-1M smoothbore gun with 32 rounds.

The Russians said the muzzle energy of this gun is greater than the world's best tank gun, the Rheinmetall 120 mm gun mounted on the German Leopard 2. They also claim the accuracy of the T-14's 125 mm gun has been improved by 15 to 20 percent.

Apart from tank rounds, the gun will be able to fire a new laser-guided missile with a tandem anti-tank warhead out to 5,000 meters. Variants of the T-14 might also mount a specially developed 152 mm gun, which will be the most powerful gun ever to equip a main battle tank.

In addition to the main gun, the turret mounts a 30 mm multi-barreled machine cannon to engage slow moving aircraft such as drones and helicopters and a Kord 12.7 mm heavy machine gun to attack soft targets like enemy infantry.

The Russians also claim the Kord is capable of shooting down incoming projectiles such as anti-tank missiles approaching at speeds of up to 3,000 meters per second.

The gunner, the commander and driver are positioned in the hull beneath the turret and protected by an armored capsule. The tank will be digitally controlled, a feature that will eventually lead to the development of a fully robotic tank.

The T-14 is protected by a special lightweight armor whose composition is classified. It weighs 55 tons and has a top speed of 75 km/h. The new tank is under development at Uralvagonzavod in Nizhny Tagil.

The T-14 is one of the configurations of the "Armata Universal Combat Platform," an advanced next generation heavy military tracked vehicle platform with multiple uses.

The platform will be produced as a main battle tank (the T-14); a heavy infantry fighting vehicle; a combat engineering vehicle; an armored recovery vehicle; a heavy armored personnel carrier; a tank support combat vehicle and several types of self-propelled artillery.

The Russian army has ordered 2,300 T-14s by 2020, enough to equip 70 percent of its total tank fleet.

The T-14 will replace the current Russian MBT, the obsolete T-80 that has been in service since 1976.

US Pilots Will Now Dogfight With Remote Controlled F-16s

user posted image

Pilots of the United States Air Force usually fly simulations of sorties to be able to maintain their flying skills at the top level required of them.

For years, the simulations have been using unmanned and specially modified F-4 Phantom IIs as the targets, which are aircraft from way back during the time of the Vietnam War.

The F-4 Phantom IIs are no longer able to keep up with the modern warplanes being used by the U.S. military today. This is why Boeing, popularly known for manufacturing commercial aircraft but is also involved in the military technology industry, was tapped by the USAF to create a new line of remote-controlled aircraft based on the much more potent F-16 Fighting Falcon jets.

According to a statement from 2013 by USAF Lt. Col. Ryan Inman, utilizing the F-16 jets as the targets for sortie simulations offers a better replication of the real-world situations that can be seen in the current environment for Air Force pilots. The F-16 presents itself as a "9G capable, highly sustainable aerial target."

"The United States Air Force's QF-16 Full Scale Aerial Target provides the next generation of combat training and testing for our nation's warfighters," Boeing said in the description of the optionally unmanned target drones.

According to Boeing, the modified F-16s are a capable, flexible and affordable solution for the USAF's dilemma of requiring an update to its targets for simulated sorties.

The QF-16s are capable because they provide a realistic simulation of the threats actually currently used by enemy military. The jets are also equipped with countermeasure technology for added accuracy in scenarios of combat, while retaining the key capabilities of the F-16s for dogfighting.

The QF-16s are flexible in that they can easily convert from being manned to unmanned, with an adaptable flight architecture and advanced control technology systems for autonomous flight.

The QF-16s are also affordable because they represent an added use for early-model F-16s, and are fully recoverable for further use after being used as target drones.

Last week, Boeing was already able to deliver a remote-controlled QF-16 aircraft target drones to the Tyndall Air Force Base. The aircraft is the first out of the 126 units that Boeing is expected to create, with five more of the QF-16 jets currently being prepared to be part of Boeing's first pre-production run. The units are expected to begin service by October.

The QF-16 target drones will be used by the 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron to become stand-in jets for the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker and the MiG-29 Fulcrum, which are jets that the USAF may encounter if armed conflict against Russia erupts.

India Said to Plan Army Drone Exports to U.S. in Role Reversal

user posted image

QUOTE
AeroVinronment Inc.’s Raven drone and Lockheed Martin Corp.’s ‘Roll On-Roll Off’ kits, which turn jumbo transport jets into surveillance aircraft, are set to be made in India and sold overseas, according to the officials, who asked not to be identified because the discussions were confidential.

The drones and surveillance hardware are two of four defense technologies the U.S. agreed to jointly produce in India, a deal reached during President Barack Obama’s trip to New Delhi in January. India’s market for both items is limited, so exports would make production viable, the officials said.

The U.S. is boosting joint production with India to profit from its $150 billion modernization plan and help it counter China’s growing military capabilities. The deals also help Prime Minister Narendra Modi create manufacturing jobs and reduce India’s reliance on arms imports.

Myanmar signs deal to buy Thunder fighter from Pakistan

user posted image

Though four Chinese civilians were killed by bombs dropped by MiG-29 fighters of the Myanmar Air Force, sources from Pakistan's Ministry of Defense said that a contract had been signed for Islamabad to sell the JF-17 Thunder multirole fighter, also known as the FC-1 Xiaolong, which was jointly developed by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, to Naypyidaw, Islamabad's Capital Television reported on March 18.

The report said various countries including Nigeria, Bangladesh, Tajikistan and Myanmar had shown great interest in purchasing the fighter from Pakistan because its price is much cheaper than other fighter jets of the same class such as the F-16 and the Eurofighter. Myanmar demonstrated its interest in the fighter back in June 2014, according to the the Myanmar Times.

Myanmar also wants to build a production line with the assistance of China and Pakistan to build the fighter for itself. Thanks to previous cooperation with China, Myanmar already has experience in producing Chinese aircraft such as the J-7 fighter or Q-5 attacker.

The purchase of the Thunder has not yet been confirmed by government officials in Mayamar. Pakistan is pushing hard to sell the fighter to foreign markets but none of the countries mentioned above has yet made a decision.

Russian Military to Get 100 Brand New Su-34 Frontline Bombers

user posted image

Over 100 Su-34 strike fighters will be produced to replace Su-24 jets in service with the Russian military, said Vladimir Mikhailov, former commander-in-chief of the Russian Air Force.

"This year the [Novosibirsk] aircraft factory must deliver 16 Su-34 frontline bombers," Mikhailov said, adding the factory is ready to exceed the production target. "Three aircraft will be delivered soon," said the director of the Moscow-based United Aircraft Corporation's Military Aviation Programs Directorate.

Mikhailov described the aircraft as solid, sound and able to cover long distances with refueling. "In other words, it meets all the requirements for the frontline bomber," he said.

The Su-34, based on the Su-27 fighter, is fitted with twin AL-31MF afterburner turbojet engines and can carry a payload of up to eight tons of precision-guided weapons over 2,500 miles. The aircraft will eventually replace all the Su-24 strike aircraft in service with the Russian Air Force and Navy.

Hainan to be the base of PLA Navy's fourth fleet?

user posted image

China may establish Yalong Bay on Hainan island as the base of its fourth naval fleet, with jurisdiction over the Indian Ocean region, according to David S McDonough, research manager and senior editor at Ottowa's Conference of Defence Associations Institute, in his recent article for the National Interest magazine.

As Hainan is currently under the jurisdiction of the PLA's South Sea Fleet and is quite a distance from the Indian Ocean, a prospective fourth fleet for the PLA Navy covering the Indian Ocean region seems to be either entirely speculative or at best a hollow force existing in name only from the perspective of many analysts. However, McDonough suggested it is unwise to underestimate China's military capabilities and ambition.

McDonough said China has recently constructed the Longpo naval base at Yalong Bay near the southeastern tip of Hainan. It will be completed as a deep-water port with submarine piers, an underground submarine facility with tunnel access and a demagnetizing facility to reduce the magnetic residuals on ship hulls. He said Yalong Bay is likely to serve as the main base of the PLA Navy's Type 094 Jin-class ballistic missile submarines.

In addition, the naval base in Yalong Bay also features long piers to moor surface combat vessels, which turns it into a multi-purpose base. McDonough added that the PLA Navy has another base dedicated to its conventional submarines in Yulin, located west of Longpo. He said the construction of facilities for surface combat vessels and new piers have begun and that a total of 29 warships may be stationed on Hainan in the near future.

Even though the South Sea Fleet will not move its headquarters from Guangdong's Zhanjiang to Hainan, McDonough said the new submarine and surface warship facilities on the island will certainly play an increasingly important role in its operations. Hainan can serve as a main base for China's ballistic missile submarines. The PLA Navy can also use it to project its power into the Indian Ocean region.

Drone war: ‘Burraq’ turned the tide in Tirah battle, say officials

user posted image
This television screen grab shows UCAV Burraq launching the laser-guided missile Burq.

PESHAWAR:
The strategic Tirah Valley has been the scene of fierce fighting between the Pakistani military and a potpourri of militants for nearly two weeks. The military claims to have achieved ‘significant successes’ in the battle for Tirah. And security officials say Pakistan’s indigenously-developed armed drone ‘Burraq’ has turned the tide against the militants in this offensive.

The remotely-piloted aircraft ‘Burraq’ and laser-guided missile ‘Burq’ were tested on March 14, taking Pakistan a step closer to acquiring the technology it has long demanded from the United States. However, senior security officials told Express News that much before ‘Burraq’ was publicly showcased it had been tested in live combat against militants in the Tirah Valley.

The officials would not say how many targets have been taken out with the help of Burraq, but they claimed that senior militant commanders, including those from Mangal Bagh’s Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI) and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), were killed in Pakistani drone strikes.

According to dronewars.net, a website that provides information and comment on use of drones, 30 other countries have large military drones. Apart from its pure military usage, Burraq also has valuable reconnaissance importance and Tirah has been a testing ground for it.

“They have built bunkers in the mountains covered by a wall which initially made it difficult for us to target,” one security official said. “However, their movements were tracked and their hideouts destroyed with the help of laser-guided missiles,” he added.

On March 18, a gathering of militants was targeted in a border village in Tirah which led some private TV channels to report that TTP chief Mullah Fazlullah was also among those killed in the strike. Officially, Fazlullah’s death was not confirmed, while the TTP denied the media report as propaganda.

Giving details of the strike, another security official said several militants had gathered in the village close to the Nizyan district of eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar. “They were celebrating [something] and had brought along three cows to slaughter,” another security official told Express News.

After a fierce battle that lasted well over a week, almost 109 militants were killed. But the victory in sight has not come easy as the ridge connecting Pakistan and Afghanistan has been the scene of bloody fighting. Though the militants have been mostly dislodged from the ridge, the LeI and TTP are getting support from militant groups from other parts of the tribal belt as well as from Afghanistan.

The officials said the fleeing militants had strapped bombs to the abandoned bodies of their comrades and security personnel killed in the fighting. Since these were ‘pressure bombs’, a special team from the Corps of Engineers had to be called in to defuse them.

While the North Waziristan operation was thought to be the mother of all battles, the Tirah operation has turned out to be more difficult than the military had anticipated.
