Move over, Humvee: IMI’s ‘CombatGuard’ 4×4 leaves its competitors in the dust

user posted image

Military vehicle aficionados, meet your next bedroom poster.

It’s called the CombatGuard, and it’s made by Israel Military Industries (IMI). First unveiled at the 2014 Eurosatory defense and security show in Paris, the armored 4×4 boasts the capabilities to make Humvees blush.

Let’s start with off-road aptitude. The CombatGuard wears massive 54-inch tires and has three feet of ground clearance, allowing it to navigate 70-degree slopes with little difficulty. It can hurdle vertical obstacles up to 2.6-feet high and can traverse through water 5-feet deep.

user posted image

On the road, the 17,637-pound vehicle can reach speeds up to 93 mph. In the dirt, it’s capable of an impressive 75 mph, which is faster than the iconic Humvee can go anywhere. This is in part due to the eight-seater’s stout engine, a GM-sourced ‘Cobra’ turbo diesel that displaces 6.5 liters and makes 300 horsepower.

The CombatGuard, which may or may not have been styled after the UNSC Warthog from the Halo series, isn’t just durable; it’s innovative. The prototypes showcased at Eurosatory were equipped with IMI’s “Bright Arrow” remote weapons station, which is essentially an electro-optical jammer that can destroy or disrupt incoming missiles and rocket-propelled grenades.

All eight occupants are housed inside a super strong monocoque capsule that offers a high level of ballistics protection. For more safety, the entirety of the exterior has been reinforced, including the floor, which was designed to deflect land mines.

IMI, the one-time manufacturer of the Desert Eagle handgun and the folding ‘CornerShot’ weapon accessory, designed the CombatGuard to be mobile, tough, and intimidating. After looking at this thing, we’re a little too frightened to argue with them.

Russia’s air corps is a powerful but fading force

QUOTE
Sixty deadly stealth fighters might sound like a lot. But the U.S. plans to build 2,400 F-35s during the next two decades, and has already started delivering them. That’s on top of the U.S. Air Force’s 187 operational F-22s already in service.  Which means Russia’s most advanced planes will be heavily outnumbered.  Meanwhile, the rest of the Kremlin’s fleet will just keep getting older.

Sanctions Hamper Receiving Arms Export Revenue, but Russia Knows a Way Out

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Western sanctions against Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine make it more difficult for Russia to obtain the money it has earned on arms exports, though Russia has found a way to deal with this problem, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said Wednesday.

“We make almost fifteen billion dollars a year. And it would seem that Russia could compensate the economic losses we have suffered over sanctions with the foreign currency earnings,” Rogozin said at a conference.

However, “the sanctions targeting the financial system of the Russian Federation complicate the return of the money we have actually earned through the sale of weapons,” the minister added.

“We have, of course, found a way to compensate this,” Rogozin noted, refraining from specifying the details.

Russian Arms Trader Exceeds 2014 Sale Forecasts by $22Mln Despite Sanctions

On Tuesday, Russia's state arms trader director general Anatoly Isaykin told RIA Novosti that the company exceeded its export projections by $22 million in 2014 despite the anti-Russia sanctions.

The United States, the European Union and their allies imposed several rounds of restrictions against Russia aiming to weaken the country's economy and particularly its defense industry and financial system in 2014. Russia has repeatedly denied the accusations.

AVIC TA-600 flying boat could be used in S China Sea: designer

user posted image

The head of the AVIC TA-600, a large amphibious flying boat, has been completed by AVIC Chengfei Commercial Aircraft Company, a major milestone in the plane's development, according to China's Global Times.

The chief designer of the plane, Huang Lingcai, told the paper on March 17 that the plane, also known as the AG600, is extremely suited to long-range ocean search and rescue missions and may be used in the South China Sea in the future.

The plane is one of three large planes that China is developing and the largest amphibious plane in the world. It was designed to meet China's aerial firefighting needs in forest regions and for search and rescue operations at sea. Its maximum takeoff weight is 53.5 tonnes and it can draw 12 tonnes of water within 20 seconds. The majority of the body of the plane is scheduled to be handed over for production at around this time. The plane will be completed this year and will have its debut flight in 2016, according to AVIC.

The plane's head is very large and may possibly be divided into two layers, according to the paper. The plane stands 4.75 meters tall and is 9.5 m long with a V-shaped monohull. Pressure requirements and the need to make the craft watertight mean that the design is more complex to design and manufacture than ordinary planes.

Huang said that the maximum takeoff weight of the Russian BE-200 and Japan's US-2 is between 40-45 tonnes, while that of Canada's Bombardier 415 Superscooper is around 20 tonnes. Huang said that overall the AVIC TA-600 is on par with these classic amphibious aircraft but that it has stronger functionality than the other planes.

The plane is an upgraded version of the Harbin SH-5 maritime patrol amphibious aircraft and is expected to form part of a series of amphibious planes, according to Huang.

Huang said that the plane could be used in 75%-80% of weather conditions in the South China Sea in the event of an accident involving an oil rig, an oil tanker or fishing boats far out to sea. Ships would take a long time to get so far out to sea and helicopters can't operate beyond a radius of around 500 km, which means that the AVIC TA-600, with a flight radius of 1,000 km, is likely to be deployed on long-range search and rescue missions, as it would only take two hours to reach targets and it can land, said Huang. On each trip the plane can carry 50 people.

Huang said that the craft is extremely versatile, which should be good for its market prospects. Currently there has been expression of interest in 17 of the planes, the majority from forestry authorities, the State Oceanic Administration and the China Coast Guard. The plane could also potentially be used to supply soldiers stationed on disputed islands in the South China Sea, according to the paper.

Although Japan is seeking to export its US-2 to India, Huang says that the AVIC TA-600 is primarily to support China's domestic search and rescue needs.

Pentagon: We Are Losing Electronic Warfare Dominance

user posted image

QUOTE
On Tuesday, Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work signed the Electronic Warfare Executive Committee into being. Led by Pentagon acquisition chief Frank Kendall and Admiral James Winnefeld, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the new committee was established to ensure that the United States stays competitive in the electromagnetic spectrum.

According to Work’s memo, the committee will seek to correct the fact that the Defense Department has "lost focus on electronic warfare at the programmatic and strategic level."

QUOTE
The Navy may purchase more Boeing EA-18G Growlers to improve its electronic warfare capabilities.  The F-35, a state-of-the-art fighter jet the US government spent $400 billion developing, was found to be highly vulnerable on its own, without the aid of electronic attack versions of the F-18, known as the Growler. If sent into combat without the Growler's support, the F-35s likely wouldn't survive in a fight against adversaries in the first days of war, according to Pentagon assessments.

The Navy was also able to find a number of design issues with its new class of littoral combat ships, including a highly flawed electronic warfare suite. To address such criticism, the Defense Department plans to construct an upgraded model of the LCS with improved EW systems, a new 3D radar, and multi-function sonar arrays.

QUOTE
U.S. Navy littoral combat ship USS Fort Worth  "It’s actually pretty clear what we need to do in many areas, but I’d say the scale of the EW problem today and the years of neglect make the remedy expensive," Kaminski said during a conference of the EW group, Association of Old Crows. "We also need something else besides money: We need senior level attention to the problem."

Senior level attention is what the committee hopes to provide, though Kendall told reporters that the $2 billion funding request is likely to go unfulfilled.  Defense Secretary Work is particularly concerned with missile defense systems.  "We need a demonstration…which can demonstrate to us that if someone throws a salvo of a hundred guided munitions [at us], we’ll be able to ride it out," Work said.

PLA expands its Type 093 midget submarine line

user posted image
in the South China Sea in August last year. (File photo/CNS)

Beijing has revealed a version of the Type 093 midget submarine, known as the 093T, suggesting that more vessels in this class may be produced, reports news website Cankao Xiaoxi.

The 093B midget submarine reportedly has a vertical launch system that can launch 16 missiles, including the supersonic anti-ship YJ-18 and the DH-10 cruise missile.

Such a submarine can carry up to nine special ops members and is ideal for covert transportation and surprise attack. It can also launch laser-guided missiles or sneak combat divers into military ports to perform recon or destroy high-value targets such as aircraft carriers or nuclear submarines.

The United States was developing a midget version of its Ohio-class submarines but reportedly stopped development after a fire in 2008. The submarines used a dry-deck shelter system which allows the midget submarine to dock completely inside of its larger cousin. The 093T submarine adapts a wet-deck shelter system, which means only two thirds of the submarine are secured to the mother submarine and the rest is exposed to water.

Could Iran's elite military force defeat ISIL?

The Islamic Republic's version of the Navy SEALs has emerged as a key player in the fight against ISIL

The U.S.-led coalition can’t defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) alone. So Iran is taking the battle against ISIL into its own hands by deploying its elite military force, Al Quds, into Iraq.

But what exactly is the Al Quds force? Could they affect the fight against ISIL? And should the U.S. be wary of their involvement? AJ+’s Dena Takruri examines these questions and more.

Skynet military satellite to deploy over Asia-Pacific – UK defense chief

user posted image

QUOTE
The MoD explained the system, which is part of a “private contract initiative,” is also intended for use by international partners.  “NATO and other allied governments are able to use Skynet services to augment their existing communication services.  “It is intended that the Skynet satellite will be in position by the middle of 2015.”

The scheme will include a new ground base in Australia and comes at a time when talk of the Western strategic reorientation towards an increasingly powerful China – known as the “pivot to Asia” – has become a key issue in international politics.  The repositioning was announced at a major arms convention taking place in Malaysia this month.

Indonesia Mimics U.S. Pacific Fleet in Navy Overhaul, Chief Says

user posted image

QUOTE
(Bloomberg) -- Indonesia is modeling its naval forces after the U.S. Pacific Fleet as President Joko Widodo restructures the nation’s military, according to his navy chief.  The Indonesian Navy will have three fleets covering the nation’s east, west and central regions that will report to a newly-created headquarters, Chief-of-Staff Admiral Ade Supandi said in an interview at a maritime convention on the Malaysian island of Langkawi.

The country has a 20-year plan to boost maritime security, he said.  “We want to create a main fleet, something like the Pacific Fleet that would be the main command fleet to deploy any requirements made by the three areas,” Supandi said. “This will make our operation and control more efficient.”

QUOTE
The nation’s seas include parts of the South China Sea, where China is locked in territorial disputes with multiple nations and claims areas near Indonesia’s Natuna islands. President Xi Jinping has made a navy with longer reach a priority to boost China’s claims in the South China Sea and East China Sea.

Indonesia has sought to stay out of its neighbors’ spats with China and is not an official claimant to areas in dispute. But it has said China’s interpretation of its nine dash-line map -- the basis for its territorial claims -- is seeping into Indonesia’s exclusive economic zone.  Supandi said he’s not worried about a challenge from China in the Natuna islands, as China’s not interested in them. Indonesia has four to five ships patrolling the area, which houses a naval and air force base, he said.

Russia's new 4th generation Lada submarine to nullify USA's naval power

user posted image

QUOTE
For example, Russia's state-of-the-art diesel-electric submarine of Project 636.3 has only 400 miles of undersea navigation. In addition, the submarine moves under water at the speed of 3 knots, i.e. 5.4 km/h. Thus, such a submarine is unable to pursue an underwater target. The sub relies on intelligence information first and foremost. Hence, the main technique to use diesel-electric submarines in combat action is known as "veil" when submarines are deployed in a line perpendicular to the probable movement of the target, at specific distances from each other.

The entire group of submarines receives commands from an external command post, which creates extra telltale factors and reduces the stability of underwater combat groups.  It has long been a dream for many navy engineers to create a submarine with a fundamentally new power plant that would combine the advantages of nuclear and diesel-electric submarines: power and stealth, longer autonomous diving and low noisiness.

QUOTE
Project 677 Lada: Major technological breakthrough  Russian submarines of Project 677 Lada with air-independent power plant will mark a serious breakthrough in this direction. The new submarine will take the Russian undersea fleet to new frontiers.  The Lada sub is not large - their displacement is almost twice as less as that of the famous Varshavyanka.

Yet, its arms complex is unusually large. In addition to traditional mine and torpedo weapons (six 533-mm torpedo tubes, 18 torpedoes or mines), Project 667 is the world's first non-nuclear submarine, equipped with specialized launchers for cruise missiles (ten vertical launchers in the middle part of the body). These cruise missiles can be both tactical and long-range missiles designed to destroy strategic targets deep into enemy territory.  The most important feature of the new Russian submarine is the new air-independent propulsion plant.

Without going into details, we would only say that with these power plants a Lada submarine will be submerged for up to 25 days - that is almost ten times longer than of its famous predecessor - Project 636.3 Varshavyanka. To crown it all, the Lada submarine will be even less noisy than the famous "black hole" Varshavyanka, which the Americans dubbed so because it is almost impossible to detect it.

QUOTE
With regard to the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, the presence of Lada-type submarines in those waters nullifies the American naval power that is primarily based on aircraft carrier strike groups.

Sonar Technicians detect, track, classify

user posted image

QUOTE
“Everything we do is pretty much classified,” Whitson said. “That’s why you will not find much written about us.”  STSs are responsible for undersea surveillance and safely navigating the submarine.

Originally known as the sonarman rating, STSs had humble beginnings.  “It was essentially putting sound out in the water, and just hoping to God it came back to whatever direction you were pointing your sensor,” Whitson said. “It was very basic then, and was used a lot during World War II and the Pacific battles for ranging of targets before firing.”

QUOTE
Whitson said now STSs sit in a dark room with not much room between the five people who share the space. They each have headphones on, listen, and watch the screen. Based on what is displayed on the screen, the STSs formulate a picture in their minds of what it means.

The priorities of a STS are extremely important for the safety of the submarine and her crew.  “We detect and classify the contacts, and provide a solution to the contact management team,” said Sonar Technician (Submarine) 1st Class Lance Hudgins, a Trident Training Facility instructor. “We develop a contact picture based off the raw data we receive.”

Norway Arctic exercise 'a provocation': Russia

user posted image

Russia has criticised Norway’s ongoing military exercise on the two countries’ northern borders as a deliberate provocation used as a cover for gathering intelligence about its Arctic neighbour.

Between March 9 and March 18, Norway’s Armed Forces are carrying out their "Joint Viking" exercise, involving 5,000 troops in Finnmark county.

In response, Russia on Monday ordered 45,000 Russian troops as well as war planes and submarines to begin exercises, in a huge show of military force.

Aleksandr Khrolenko, a Putin loyalist who has held senior positions in Chechnya and South Ossetia, argued that Nato, through Norway, had deliberately provoked Russia, writing in Ria Novosti, Russia’s state newswire.
“Given the growing tensions between Russia and Nato, the choice of training area looks like a provocation,” Khrolenko wrote.

By bringing the Norwegian frigate Thor Heyerdahl to Kirkenes, a Norwegian town on Russia’s border, Norway was mounting “a threat to Russia’ Northern Fleet”, he argued.

The Norwegian made Naval Strike Missile (NSM) has a range of 185km, whereas Severomorsk, the main base for Russia’s northern fleet is just 150km away.

The Nato exercises, he argued, “violates longstanding principles of good neighbourliness in the Arctic”.

Norway had not invited Russian military observers to the exercise, he added, ending decades of common practice.

He also claimed that Nato was using its Arctic exercises to learn how to mount intelligence operations against Russia in the north, and also to increase “military pressure” on the Russian Arctic.

US Army approves Israeli surveillance balloon for purchase

user posted image

QUOTE
The US Army has named a surveillance aerostat made by Israeli defense firm RT as an approved defense technology for purchase, the company announced on Wednesday.  RT’s Skystar 180 balloon successfully completed the annual Army Expeditionary Warrior Experiment (AEWE), a lengthy process used to shortlist defense products for US acquisition.  The Skystar 180 system, frequently used by the IDF over Gaza during Operation Protective Edge last summer, includes a miniature, multi-sensor payload made by Israeli company CONTROP.

It serves army missions from the company to the brigade levels, according to RT.  The AEWE program, held at Fort Benning, Georgia, is used by the US Army to encourage companies from around the world to submit production-ready devices and products for approval.

“The selection and approval of the SkyStar 180 by the US Army is evidence of the system’s quality and its high-level technological capabilities, and it is a great honor for us,” said RT’s CEO, Rami Shmueli. “Our unique aerostat systems are the only long-distance aerial surveillance system that can operate from as high as 600 meters.”  SkyStar 180 is a small mobile balloon designed for tactical mid-range surveillance and public safety, police, and military applications.  It can carry day and night electro-optical payloads and a communication relay, suspended from a helium-filled balloon that is tethered to the ground.

Russia, China may coordinate on nuclear-powered destroyer

user posted image

Russia is very likely to start construction on the world's third nuclear-powered destroyer with the assistance of China.

Admiral Igor Kasatonov, retired deputy commander of the Russian Navy, said the construction of the 10,000-ton Leader-class guided-missile destroyer would begin in 2017. Vasily Kashin, a military expert from the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies based in Moscow, said the project provides a new opportunity for China and Russia to deepen defense cooperation.

The Leader-class destroyer would be the world's third nuclear-powered destroyer after the USS Truxtun (DLGN-35) and USS Bainbridge (DLGN-25) of the United States. Since both American vessels were later redesignated cruisers, the Leader-class would in fact be the only nuclear-powered destroyer in the world. Kashin said that the Leader-class is larger than the two American ships.

Unlike the US Navy, Russia does not have overseas naval bases around the world, the piece said, and it makes sense for Russia and China to build nuclear-powered destroyers or cruisers that can remain at sea for longer. Kashin also said China is working hard on the design of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The participation of China in the construction of the Leader-class destroyer may give China the experience it needs, he said.

Iraqi Air Force got CH-4B drone from China: Moscow think tank

user posted image

QUOTE
The photograph of the drone suspected to be the CH-4B at an Iraqi Air Force base currently making the rounds on social media. (Internet photo)  A photograph has surfaced online which purportedly shows a CH-4B unmanned combat aerial vehicle stationed at an Iraqi Air Force base, according to a March 17 report by Moscow-based think tank Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies cited by China's Global Times.

This is the first known instance of the drone, developed by Beijing-based China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), being exported, according to the paper.  The CH-4 series of drones, the design for which was heavily copied from the US MQ-1 Reaper developed by General Atomics, entered service with the PLA Air Force in 2013.  The CH-4 has a wingspan of 18 m and a maximum takeoff weight of 1350 kilograms. Two variants of the drone have emerged, the CH-4A surveillance drone and the combination surveillance and attack CH-4B.

The CH-4A can fly for a maximum of 30 hours or 5,000 km, although another estimate put it as high as 40 hours. It can cruise at altitudes of between 5,000-7,000 m at a speed of 150-180 km per hour. The drone can fly within a 250 km radius of its operator, but with a satellite link this can be increased to 2,000 km.

The CH-4B can carry six weapons weighing up to a maximum of 250-350 kg, according to different estimates, and it is equipped to carry CASC's 45 kg AR-1 laser-guided anti-tank missile, which can be fired from an altitude of 5,000 m, and several small satellite-guided aerial bombs, weighing 100 kg. With a full weapons payload it can fly for a maximum of 14 hours.

DARPA moves ahead on long-range 100 Gbps wireless links

user posted image

Pentagon researchers are taking the next step in developing an airborne wireless link that can transmit data at 100 gigabits per second over long distances.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has issued a Broad Agency Announcement for Phases 2 and 3 of the project, which could issue up to two awards totaling $27 million. The goal is to hit 100 Gbps across 100 kilometers (62 miles) for an air-to-ground link and 200 kilometers (124 miles) for an air-to-air link, each within a single radio-frequency channel.

Six contractors—Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Battelle Memorial Institute, Silvus Technologies, Trex Enterprises and Applied Communication Sciences— took part in Phase 1 of the program, which explored high-order modulation at millimeter-wave frequencies and spatial multiplexing as the foundations for achieving 100 Gbps. Phase 1 technologies achieved rates in excess of 25 Gbps on a single carrier and 50 Gbps with dual polarization, DARPA said, showing the potential for 100 Gbps.

How fast is 100 Gbps? In October 2013, German researchers managed that speed, which was at the time declared to be a world record for wireless transmission, 10 times faster than Google Fiber. But that was in a lab, using lasers combined with electronics. So getting to 100 Gbps in the air over long distances would be quite a feat.

Basically, DARPA wants to provide forces in the field with the kind of connectivity they would get from a fiber optic network, but do it wirelessly. That 100 Gbps speed would be about 500 times faster than the military’s current wireless connections.

In the next phases of DARPA’s program, researchers will seek to develop a prototype airborne data link capable of being installed in a high-altitude aerial platform, operating at up to 60,000 feet, and functioning in all weather conditions, regardless of rain, fog or clouds. The system will include both airborne and ground nodes, with the airborne node’s size, weight and power requirements being compatible with high-altitude unmanned aircraft, DARPA said.

Russia Targets NATO With Military Exercises

user posted image

Analysis
QUOTE
According to Russian statements, the snap exercise, which was not announced before it began March 16, will last five days and will involve some 45,000 servicemen, around 3,000 vehicles, more than 40 surface vessels, 15 submarines and 110 aircraft. The more notable systems involved are the Iskander mobile theater ballistic missiles and fighter aircraft that are being deployed to Kaliningrad, Tu-22M3 long-range strategic bombers that are being deployed to Crimea, and ballistic missile submarines that have been sent to sea with protective escorts.

QUOTE
The forward deployment of theater ballistic missiles and bomber aircraft are provocative indicators of possible pre-emptive action against NATO and Eastern Europe. Given Russia's military actions in Ukraine, the possibility, however unlikely, that the country could expand operations cannot be dismissed.

For that reason, and because Russia has intentionally designed the drills to mimic a potential conflict with Europe, the exercises are cause for alarm in Europe.  By deploying Tu-22M3 bomber aircraft, Russia is also openly invoking the threat of nuclear confrontation. Considering Moscow's statements about a potential deployment of nuclear weapons to Crimea, Russia is clearly connecting the Ukraine crisis and its intentions in the Arctic to the nuclear deterrent it possesses.

QUOTE
Considering the military tensions surrounding the Ukraine crisis and its fragile cease-fire, these exercises are an aggressive signal, particularly since they immediately follow Putin's mysterious disappearance last week. Russia has an interest in flexing its military muscle to remind everyone of the havoc it could wreak and to dissuade anyone from taking radical action in Ukraine. The United States has been careful when it comes to Ukraine, even delaying the deployment of 300 U.S. troops to western Ukraine as part of a training exercise. The United States maintains, however, that this deployment is still an option and could order it as early as April.

In that context, Russia's exercises serve as threats to the opposing forces, demonstrating capabilities and suggesting intent. But they are important military tools to the Russian military as well. To maintain readiness, actually executing operations or deployments through exercises is a must. Beyond that, Russian military planners need to have a realistic understanding of the capabilities of Russian forces. There is no better way to gain this understanding than to let those forces run through operations, or parts of them, to determine the basic parameters that are feasible. As Russia tests its own capabilities, it shows the rest of the world the type of operations and the military districts it considers key in its strategic planning.

Saab offers solutions for RI’s defense ambitions

In Gothenburg, Saab introduced its Erieye airborne early warning (AEW) system and radar manufacturing facilities.  The Erieye AEW is based on active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology, which boasts a multi-tasking capability.

Saab vice president and airborne surveillance systems head Lars Tossman told the group that the Erieye AEW system would be a good fit for Indonesia’s geography as it could cover more area than the conventional systems.  Covering 900 square kilometers in diameter, the Erieye AEW system can scan targets beyond the horizon. This equals a 500,000 square kilometers area with a height of 20 kilometers, allowing the system to detect potential targets.  “We’re in the middle of discussing this with the Indonesian government,” Tossman said in a discussion held last week.

For daily operations, the system requires two aircraft equipped with Erieye radars to cover 80 percent of Indonesia’s territory. One aircraft can be deployed from Jakarta to cover the western part and another from Makassar, South Sulawesi, to monitor the eastern part of the country.  The Erieye AEW system has been certified to be placed on two platforms: Sweden’s own Saab 2000 turboprop airliner and the Brazilian Embraer ERJ 145 regional jet.

Tossman said to encourage other countries to acquire the system, it was also possible to install it on other platforms, such as the Indonesian-made CN-235/295 manufactured by state-owned PT Dirgantara Indonesia.  However, he warned that installing the Erieye AEW system on other platforms would then oblige the user to make improvements to the assigned aircraft, which would cost more money.

The platform required Saab certification before it could house the Erieye AEW system.  Meanwhile, Lars Ekstrom of Saab’s airborne surveillance system, who served in the Swedish Air Force, said the Erieye AEW system had been tested in Mexico in 2006. The system helped the Mexican Air Force rid the country’s air space of aircraft allegedly bringing illegal drugs to the country.

“The strategy could be applied to Indonesia. The system could be directed at the most prone areas like the Malacca Strait, while it also monitors other activities simultaneously,” he told The Jakarta Post.  He said the Erieye AEW system could also be deployed to monitor illegal fishing activities across the 17,000-island archipelago.
