Probably just me, but I don't think a RWS turret is a good tactical choice. Sure, the gunner will be more protected from enemy fire, but there are tons of drawbacks to it.

1)Little environmental awareness & limited outside view for commander

2)no protecting armor makes the attached weapons & cameras are extremely vulnerable to damage by shrapnel & stray rounds

3)the camera/remote firing system, commander and gunner using space inside the vehicle itself instead of a dedicated fighting space inside an external turret thereby making the vehicle interior more cramped and restricts space for infantrymen (in case of APC and IFV)

4)if the gun develops any problems, for example misfires and jamming or being misaligned in battle, lack of access means a crewman will have to literally get out of a hatch and climb onto the roof to repair it (potentially in the middle of a battle)

For those people who naively wished for 'peace in the middle east' circa 1980s and 1990s, where the only conflict is the relatively low-key Israeli-Palestinian conflict & probably the Lebanese civil war probably would drop dead on seeing the clusterf*ck that is the middle east these days.

-Israeli-Palestinian conflict still not settled
-IS terror group invasion of Syria and Iraq
-Bloody ongoing civil war in Syria (est. 250,000 casualties)
-Cold war between Sunni and Syiah states
-Near-disaster of the 'Arab Spring'. Some made it OK (Tunisia), while some descended deeper into chaos (Libya)
-Yemen Civil war and Saudi-led Arab coalition conducting air strikes & poised for ground invasion

Compared to now, the middle east was probably as peaceful as it gets back in the 1980s and 1990s. laugh.gif

Family of recruit who died during training to sue SAF for negligence and 'failing to provide a safe training environment'
QUOTE

The family of a national serviceman who died in 2012 after an allergic reaction to smoke grenades is suing the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) for allegedly failing to provide a safe training environment.

Private Dominique Sarron Lee's platoon commander and the exercise's chief safety officer are also being sued for negligence.

The suit has been filed in the High Court, where claims exceed $250,000. The damages being sought include $34,300 for Pte Lee's tombstone.

The 21-year-old suffered breathing difficulties and passed out during the exercise in Lim Chu Kang in April 2012, which involved the use of six smoke grenades.

The former track athlete from the Singapore Sports School was evacuated to Sungei Gedong Medical Centre before being warded at National University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 2pm the same day.

A coroner's inquiry in August 2013 found that he had died from an acute allergic reaction to zinc chloride, a key compound used in smoke grenades.

The coroner also agreed with the findings of an independent Committee of Inquiry in 2012 which said that the number of smoke grenades used in the exercise exceeded the limit of two specified in safety regulations.

State Coroner Imran Abdul Hamid also pointed out that Pte Lee had "underplayed and underdeclared" his history of respiratory illness during a pre-enlistment medical check-up, in which he failed to mention his latest attack.

The guy had severe asthma, which should have disqualifed him for NS in the first place. Discovering he had allergy towards Zinc Chloride was nobody's fault.

But he's a track athlete? How can a track athlete have an asthma?

Some people like that, when you have asthma doesn't automatically mean you cannot exert yourself. My one friend got bad asthma, have to use inhaler multiple times a day but still can play futsal like hell every night. laugh.gif

RAF scrambles to intercept two Russian long-range bombers just hours after a Russian navy flotilla transits the English channel

user posted image

RAF Typhoon fighters were scrambled from an air base in Scotland after two Tu-95 'Bear' long-range bombers were detected closing in on British airspace. The fighters were deployed immediately from Lossiemouth AFB after radar controllers confirmed that incoming Russian bombers were edging closer to British airspace. The fighters then promptly escorted the bombers until the bombers have definitively are on the way out of British airspace.

The encounter came hours after a Russian navy flotilla, which included a Destroyer ship transited along the English channel on its way to the North Sea. The flotilla, which comprised of the Udaloy-class Destroyer Severmorsk and its 3 support ships, were transiting the Channel on its way from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean. Several Royal Navy ships including the Frigate HMS Argyll were tasked with monitoring the Russian flotilla along its transit. It is thought that the Russians were trying to gather intelligence on a NATO naval exercise conducted off the coast of Northern Scotland codenamed 'Exercise Joint Warrior'.

Russian aircraft incursions of british airspace have increased dramatically in recent years, peaking in 2014 where an estimated 100 interceptions were made by the RAF of various Russian Air Force airplanes closing in on British Airspace. This is nearly a three-fold increase from encounters in 2013.

It was never a question by the way, it was rhetorical, just some humorous observation of the likeness!

It's a meeting in Pakistan with a pakis general, it's either the prime minister shit or some important founding father shit.

And you need to grow some sense of humor brah

Really!
The way the line was structured, complete with question mark in the end sure made me see that as a question. The bit about the Jinnah/Obama resemblance also really marked the 'rhetorical question' as stupid and infantile. I advise on the need for new glasses.

Probably the 'quality' of your earlier posts in this forum threw me off, but hey, probably that's just me. When people reply to your posts with nonsense like this, see how you feel. brows.gif

Indian and Chinese troops today held a ceremonial Border Personnel (BP) meeting along Sino-India border in Ladakh sector of Jammu and Kashmir and agreed to uphold peace and tranquility along the LAC.

A ceremonial Border Personal meeting was held today between Indian Army and Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) of China on the occasion of 'Vasakhi Festival', PRO, Defence, Northern Command, Col S D Goswami said.

"The meeting was held in Chushul sector of Eastern Ladakh. The delegations were lead by Brigadier J K S Virk of the Indian side and senior Colonel from the Chinese side," he said.

The ceremonial border personal meeting included the ceremonial address by both delegations leaders which was composed of exchange of greetings, wishes, vote of thanks and reflected the mutual desire of maintaining and improving relations at the functional level on the border, the PRO said.

Col Goswami said "a cultural programme showcasing the vibrant Indian culture and traditional grandeur was organised by the Indian Army".

"Both the delegations interacted in a free, congenial and cordial environment," Col Goswami said, adding that "the delegations parted amidst feeling of friendship and commitment towards enhancing the existing cordial relations and maintaining peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC)".

"Both sides also sought to build on the mutual feeling of upholding the treaties and agreements signed between the governments of the two countries to maintain peace and tranquillity along the LAC," Col Goswami said.

Singapore military chief reaffirms SAF-PLA military ties with six-day visit to China

user posted image

China and Singapore have agreed on concrete initiatives to deepen their defence relationship after Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant-General Ng Chee Meng (left), met People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Chief of General Staff, General Fang Fenghui (right).

Lieutenant General Ng is on a six-day introductory visit to China until Saturday at the invitation of General Fang. Both exchanged views on the regional security situation and the state of bilateral defence cooperation, Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said in a news release on Tuesday (Apr 14).

MINDEF added that both armed forces chiefs committed to expanding interactions with each other under the Four-Point Consensus which was agreed on between Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen and China's Minister of National Defence Chang Wanquan during Dr Ng's visit to China last November.

Lieutenant General Ng also called on General Chang, and both reaffirmed the excellent state of bilateral relations on the 25th anniversary since diplomatic ties were established. They also noted the good progress made in military cooperation.

MINDEF said Lieutenant General Ng’s visit to Beijing underscores the warm and growing ties between both countries and is the latest in a regular exchange of high-level bilateral and defence visits.

Indian Army sends contingent to take part in Moscow Victory day celebrations

user posted image

A 71-member marching contingent of the Indian Army will take part in the 2015 Victory Day Parade in Moscow's Red Square on May 9, an event that would be witnessed by President Pranab Mukherjee.

This is the first time that the Indian Army is taking part in the Moscow Victory Day Parade, which is held to mark the day of Nazi Germany's surrender to the erstwhile Soviet Union in 1945.

Defence sources said that a contingent of 75 soldiers from the Grenadiers Regiment will be visiting Moscow next month for the event. While 71 would march, four will be on standby.

Russia's role in the recent crisis involving Crimea has prompted a number of western nations that had fought in World War II on the Allied side to not participate in this year's celebrations.

Islamic State (IS) counteroffensive campaign shocks Iraq and its allies

user posted image
Iraqi Shiite militiamen advance to battle IS militants forcing their way into Ramadi

Although the recent coalition airstrikes and counterattacks by Iraqi military and Shiite militias seems to have pushed back the gains made by the IS in recent campaigns, a sudden and heavy attack made by militants on the city of Ramadi and the nearby oil refinery at Baiji on Monday seems to have taken everyone by surprise. This brings back serious questions on actually how much offensive power IS has and if whether the Iraqi army-Shiite militia alliance is as effective as they portray.

Anbar provincial council member Athal al-Fahdawi said the government compound was within range of IS heavy weapons and that it and the city were "in great danger". Thousands of people have fled the escalating violence in Ramadi and the surrounding area in the past week. On Wednesday, IS forces captured three villages on the outskirts of the city.

"The city of Ramadi and its government compound are in great danger," he warned. The interior ministry has sent "an urgent response unit", but Mr Fahdawi said the reinforcements were insufficient to repel the jihadists' assault.

US-led coalition aircraft are targeting IS positions in villages captured on Wednesday, security officials told AP news agency.

PLA navy rescued 600 Chinese and 300 foreign nationals from fighting in Yemen

Chinese and foreign nationals waiting to be evacuated line up to board a Chinese navy warship

China's recent mission to evacuate the country's nationals from war-torn Yemen demonstrated substantial growth in the country's power, according to the Guangzhou-based Southern Weekly.

Evacuating some 600 Chinese nationals and 300 foreign citizens was not easy task, requiring a high degree of firepower and extreme vigilance, the paper said. The foreign nationals rescued are from Pakistan, Germany, Ireland, Singapore, and the U.K.

"An evacuation is not simply about picking up people and getting them on board," the weekly said, noting that the Chinese government had dispatched two Type 054 Frigates, the Linyi and the Weifang, the Type 903 supply ship Weishanhu, two helicopters, and more than 700 personnel, including dozens of special forces soldiers. It is said that the Chinese vessels are redeployed from the international anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden.

The PLA Marines and special forces units deployed successfully secured the port and positioned snipers to ensure the safety of evacuess during the evacuation from the port city of Aden. The successful rescue has generated praise from world leaders and governments.

New variants of the ZBL-09 8x8 IFV seen in public

Seems like NORINCO is maximizing the capabilities of the ZBL-09 8x8 IFV chassis. New prototypes seen in public is a scissors bridge carrier and an unknown variant, possibly a dedicated amphibious armored vehicle.

Unknown vehicle, possibly amphibious armored vehicle? It's speculated the raised superstructure makes it easier for commader & driver to see while on the water, sorta like a ship's bridge. Also the marks on the side of the hull, could they be related to ship's Plimsoll lines?
