IAF Sukhoi SU-30 jet crashes in Assam; pilots safe

IAF fighter jet Sukhoi-30 crashed 36 km away from Tezpur Air Base. ANIA frontline Sukhoi SU-30MKI combat jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed in Assam's Nagaon district at 12.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to officials, both the pilots were safe.

The aircraft had taken off from the Tezpur air base "on a routine mission", the official said.

"After take off, the aircraft had developed a technical snag and the pilot was forced to abandon the aircraft. Both the pilots ejected. The ejection was safe and the aircraft crashed at 1230 hours...in a thick forest near Tezpur.

"A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident," Group Captain Amit Mahajan, the defence ministry PRO in Shillong, said in a statement.

A second Marine has died of injuries suffered in the training exercise crash of an MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, the Marine Corps said Wednesday.

The Marine's family was notified but his name was not immediately released. He died early Wednesday at a hospital in Oahu, the Marine Corps said. Two other Marines who were aboard the Osprey remain hospitalized in stable condition, said Capt. Brian Block, a spokesman for the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Najib mention nothing bout defence

KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 (Bernama) -- Sweden is looking forward to enhance cooperation with Malaysia, especially in the defence industry.

Its ambassador to Malaysia, Bengt G. Carlsson said his government looked forward to working together with the Malaysian Government.

He hoped Malaysia would "support" Swedish companies such as the aerospace and defence company, SAAB Group.

"So far, we have good relations and I hope we can enhance (the relations) in the defence industry.

"We are hoping for (to secure) successful contracts with our companies," he told reporters after attending a lecture on 'Combat Air System: Future Development, Challenges and Way Forward at the National Defence University of Malaysia' here today.

He noted the relationship between the two friendly nations were growing and they had enhanced ties substantially.

Diplomatic relations between Sweden and Malaysia were established in 1958.

BEIJING — China is contributing 600 personnel, including 49 from the military, to multinational disaster relief exercises in Malaysia, the first time it has taken part in such an effort, the Defence Ministry said Saturday.

China’s contribution will include experts from the foreign and civil affairs ministry, along with local government bodies and troops from the army and paramilitary forces, the ministry said.

One of the navy’s most modern amphibious dock ships and its accompanying helicopter will also play a role in the drills, it said.
