QUOTE(horns @ Mar 7 2015, 10:14 AM) nice and thanks for sharing I do agree at your point. Only notice big different if you moving from HDD to SSD. well, fyi for general use, you can hardly notice the performance differences between mainstream and enthusiast ssds. this is why it's sufficient to get mainstream drives. it's cheaper, and you get more space to use. |

QUOTE(horns @ Mar 7 2015, 11:46 AM) yes for common usage, consumer sata ssds are almost the same these days. you hardly feel the differences. 840 Pro is last 2 years products only.. not that old anyway... once my new gpus are here, i will do sata raid0 setup also because of pcie lane limitations (making use of my old 840 pro). i'm glad i have plenty of sata ports lol! |

QUOTE(horns @ Mar 9 2015, 11:05 PM) yes that's normal. it's the sata2 bottleneck that hinders the performance of your ssd. don't get the wrong idea that when you have a ssd then you must be able to cold-boot it faster than a hdd, especially when you are running w8.x. (like TristanX pointed out, there are things that need time to load during boot time. the more hardware you put in, the long time it takes) the more important part imo is always when you use a computer, e.g. loading apps/games, and working on stuff. it should be more responsive than before with a ssd. sorry but i don't get the part that you are disappointing to have a ssd in your system. maybe you guys should share some pointers to limadekad on how you make it run fast QUOTE(limadekad @ Mar 10 2015, 11:11 AM) well, i was hoping for a noticable speed bump when i upgraded my system with an ssd and additional ram. Here is mine result.what option do i have? upgrade my mobo? [attachmentid=4366479] |

QUOTE(limadekad @ Mar 11 2015, 04:05 PM) what mobo would you recommend? m-atx form factor if possible, and cheap. Try ask Sifu here for quicker responds about the hardware recommendation. i dunno, i just don't feel the speed bump, maybe because i used to tweak the start-up for faster boot time. back in the old days when i upgraded my ram from 512mb to 2gb, the speed increase felt significant. Rig Suggestion Q&A Thread V8! QUOTE(stromae @ Mar 11 2015, 05:22 PM) i plan to change cmos battery on my mobo...already almost 7 years.. will it cause problem when i install windows/change on ssd.. thx I thought changing CMOS battery only effect all date/time only? |

QUOTE(Lotus1109 @ Mar 11 2015, 10:08 PM) thanks for sharing this but my question is, does it cover warranty in Malaysia so that I don't have to send back to US if something happen to it? No idea.. By the way, they just reduce from 30% to 23% today.so far in my mind I know intel 730 and sandisk extreme cover int warranty... |

QUOTE(horns @ Mar 12 2015, 11:35 PM) the better way to install os is to use usb drive. it's much faster, and is usually error-free. Great advice, I thought we were not able to retrieve the embedded win8 key.first of all, run slmgr /dlv in admin command prompt, it will tell you which version of w8 the laptop is running on. the common ones are windows core, or single language. the laptop should run in uefi mode (gpt disk type). for new ssd, you just let the windows install media to do the job for you (make the ssd a gpt disk, and populate the appropriate partitions for uefi install). the key step to install windows in uefi mode is to use fat32-formatted usb drive, and extract the contents of downloaded w8 iso (the correct version based on the results of slmgr), and use the usb drive to install the os. (alternatively you can use marfccy's way to do it too) when you boot, select uefi type of your usb drive. (it will be labelled as something like 'uefi: <usb.drive.name>' in the boot media selection menu) by default, as long as you are using the right windows version, the key in bios will be used automatically during the installation. as for cd key, machines that come with w8 or above don't have stickers under the laptop or inside the battery compartment anymore. it's embedded in the bios. you can use belarc advisor or rweverything to view it. (for backup purposes) if somehow you cannot activate the windows with this key, you can call microsoft for help. (did this before) no, there is no need to prep imo. you can actually format the usb drive with fat32 (for uefi mode installation; or ntfs for bios mode installation), then extract the contents of w8 iso into the drive. the structure since w8 can boot in uefi or bios mode depending on the type of filesystem format. for w7, you can do the same but an additional firmware file must be put in the right directory structure to make it work. |

QUOTE(horns @ Mar 13 2015, 09:30 AM) no problem. once you have completed all the driver install and windows updates, have windows activated, and have essential applications installed and updated, and confirmed everything is working fine, you can create a system image using the built-in tool. the apparent advantage of this method is to create a working snapshot of the os in its up-to-date form. this way, you do not need to go through all software installs, updates and patches again and again. (it's gigabytes these days, so it's a rather painful and time-consuming process) note that the windows activation tokens are also preserved in this process, so you don't need to call up Microsoft every time you do the system restore. all things that you need can be restored with less time, if something bad happens. Talking about we use create system image on previous HDD/SSD using Windows built-in-tool, what was the software name? all you need is an external storage for system images, and a bootable and compatible windows install media. haha yeah i thought the same initially, until i searched the web out of curiosity lol And also, why not we use 3rd Party Software like Clonezilla? |

QUOTE(horns @ Mar 13 2015, 12:38 PM) tbh there is no serious harm done without disabling this. without it the system still runs fine and as speedy as what i want. to me it's better to disable them. (save some writes) Maybe I should move my temporary file to ram too. I got 16GB RAM while with 128GB SSD as my primary SSD partition. yes i have disabled those too. apart from that, i move user temporary folder to ram disk. there are a lot of background writes that make use of temp folders that we are not aware of in daily use. these temp files are usually can be discarded safely upon reboot. QUOTE(1024kbps @ Mar 13 2015, 02:21 PM) Juse use Acronis TrueImage WD edition, or windows own backup utility. Thank you. I will look into it.The Rufus one only can create bootable disk from Windows 7/8 disc or Linux discs. |
