Gamers got their first look at Gearbox’s highly anticipated upcoming strategy title Homeworld Remastered Collection at PAX South 2015. The game is a remake of Relic’s classic real-time strategy title Homeworld 1 and 2. Sadly Homeworld: Cataclysm is not part of the collection. The developers have also revealed a release date as well as screenshots and a trailer for the remake at their panel in PAX.

The original Homeworld strategy games were developed by Relic Entertainment and won many Game of the Year awards. The series eventually came to a halt in 2003 after the release of Homeworld 2. Developers Gearbox bought the rights to the Homeworld franchise and have now announced the return of the game with their Homeworld Remastered Collection.

According to Gearbox, Homeworld Remastered will feature a new combined multiplayer setup from both the games as well as a couple of other bonuses. Here is Gearbox’s statement:

“Homeworld Remastered Collection updates and introduces the landmark space strategy games to modern audiences. The collection includes Homeworld and Homeworld 2, painstakingly remastered by Gearbox in cooperation with key members of the original development team and members of the series’ passionate fan community. As a free bonus, this collection also includes the original versions of Homeworld and Homeworld 2 with compatibility updates, preserving the purest form of the original releases.”

Purchasing the Collection will give players access to the games Steam Multiplayer Beta. So players can now enjoy the games multiplayer feature.

“Competitive multiplayer modes for Homeworld and Homeworld 2 have been joined to offer players access to races, maps and game modes from both games in one integrated multiplayer experience. This beta combines code from over 15 years ago with newly-written changes, and will be shaped by fan feedback as development progresses.”

Homeworld Remastered is set to release on February 25th and is priced at $34.99. The game can also be pre-ordered on Steam for a discounted price of $29.74. This will change once the game launches so it’s best to place your order now. You can also check out the new trailer showcasing the remastered game below:

Homeworld is getting a facelift on 26 February and this video explains why.

Homeworld is a classic RTS that’s getting a complete makeover later this month and in this video members of the development team, both past and present, discuss the game and why this game needed a remastering. If you’re a fan of the RTS genre or played the original two games then I think you’ll agree that even though this is not a new game, it’s a remastering that deserves some attention.

On IncGamers this week we’ll be talking more with the development team and also going hands-on with the new versions of the games. It’s a bit of a Homeworld week here at IncGamers.

See Homeworld Remastered At 5K Resolution

By Alec Meer on February 12th, 2015 at 5:00 pm.
Tweet this

They should have sent – hey, no, don’t interrupt me with your obvious, tired pop culture quote. I was going to say they should have sent someone with a triple SLI setup and a 4K monitor. Instead they sent me, with a single graphics card and a 1440p monitor. Even so, I was able to get a preview build of the Homeworld Collection Remastered [official site] running at a preposterous beyond-4K 5120×2880 resolution, via the dynamic super resolution stuff in drivers*. Take a below. It is… well, yeah, maybe I do need that poet after all.

Let’s start with a video of Homeworld 2’s remastered introduction. This is running at 5120×2880, which is deemed ‘5K’, but downscaled to 2560×1440 because my encoding programs were grumbling about anything more than that. If I can render a higher res video for you later I will, but even so, this conveys the galactic enormity and clean, star-travelling lines of it all. Fullscreen, set the settings icon lower right to the highest you can, and bathe in it!

How about that, huh? Sorry about the jumpiness and frame rate, there’s only so much my poor single GPU PC can handle. Maybe I should start a Patreon: “buy Alec a 4K system and monitor so he can make short videos of old games at silly resolutions.” That’d be worth making everyone hate me and publicly call my integrity into question, right?

The screenshots throughout this post will expand to the full, ludicrous 5120×2880 versions (hosted via Flickr) if you click on them, by the way. There’s possibly some image compression, but still. BUT STILL. Edit – actually it links to a downscaled version, but if you click the ‘download’ button on the lower right you can grab the full-size originals.

So that’s the shinies covered to some extent, but I’m afraid I can’t tell you an awful lot about how the remastered version feels right now. The unfinished pre-release build I’ve been fiddling with wouldn’t run on ATI cards and I was only able to lay hands on GeForce (a 970, since you ask) yesterday. Gearbox tell me the bug will be fixed before the game’s public launch on February 25th, however, so fear not there, but yeah, I haven’t been able to put much time into this yet. I’ll do a follow-up piece if I can.

Early prodding and poking does, however, suggest that Homeworld Remastered doesn’t feel at all archaic, although it’s almost immediately more complicated, and even fiddly, than the standards we’ve come to expect from more contemporary RTSes, which tend towards the hyper-slick Blizzard model. This is, I think, still a game which is going to require time and patience. Which is exactly what we want, right?

Honestly though, for now I’m happy just to roll around in graphics porn. 16 years old and this feels like an epochal thing to happen on my monitor. Clearly I won’t play it at 6K, although 4k at max settings is coaxing at least 30fps out of my system pretty happily. The UI is pretty tiny at that scale – edit: apparently there is a size adjustment option I hadn’t spotted – so I might end up going back down to ‘just’ 1440p, but in any case, I am extremely happy with what my eyes are beholding. This is a very different offering from the remastering we saw in Grim Fandango and The Indigo Prophecy recently. It looks for the most part like a modern game, not an old one with some bits given a good scrub.

Gearbox’s line when talking about this – including in an interview which we’ll run here soon – is that they wanted Homeworld Remastered to look like we all remember Homeworld feeling at the time. To be honest, I think it may have exceeded that.

More on this soon. Homeworld Remastered Collection – containing both remastered games plus their original versions – is due for release on February 25th. Here’s a bonus Making Of dev diary for you:

* That’s what NVIDIA call it, but you get Virtual Super Resolution if you have an AMD card. In any case, it’s a driver settings tweak which means making a game run at a resolution higher than your monitor supports, then downscale so it fits your screen but still gives you a crisper, more detailed image. Obviously there’s a big performance hit, but running at 4K often negates the need for anti-aliasing because there are so many damned pixels in play, so the performance trade-offs can cancel each other out if you’re lucky.

Had a nice 4v4 match against AI last night. took awhile since one of the AI was playing hide-and-seek with us.

QUOTE
This project is for a Hiigaran Scout Ship model. This is among the smallest ships in Homeworld 2. It's a fast, maneuverable ship that players use to explore the surrounding space.

Our ship is slightly under-scaled from the in-game version to allow a more economical price point. As shown in the model, a cockpit interior is possible at this scale and can fit 1-2 minifigs, improving the playability of the set.

Finally, the main project photo depicts a re-colored version of the model which more closely matches the ship's in-game default color scheme. We believe that this may be more eye-catching to the general public than the iconic "Dust Wars" inspired red color scheme. Homeworld's ships are renowned for being brightly colored, which makes them excellently suited to this medium. Additionally, it provides another opportunity to enhance the desirability of the set, by using one of three usually rare colors - either medium azure, dark azure, or sand blue - for the primary color. The stripe can be regular orange.

An interesting bit of trivia - the font Homeworld uses is the same font used on the bricks from the Classic Space "LL-" series ships.

well... i found a few bugs on homeworld remastered version....

1. tutorial keep continuing without me hitting the "OK" button
2. Support frigates are useless.
3. Capturing mechanics broken
4. queues limited to 2?
5. Collision system is broke, stuff like resource collecters and other ship crash into astroids or other objects and then attempt to push through them instead of moving back.
6. camera views are glitchy and does not allow you zoom in far without annoyance or get a good view of battle without going to tactical view

maybe its just you, but for me:
1. dunno...i dun need tutorial...i've played the tutorial 10 years ago.
2. they repair my ships just fine....try this; instead of having them in the strike group, have them guard that strike group...also..set them as passive/neutral stance...if u put them on aggressive they will focus on enemy instead of providing repair support (just a theory...memory a bit hazy after 10yrs not playing)
3. i hv no problem capturing. what are you trying to cap? frigates? capital ships? the bigger the ship, the more corvette u need....for frigates u need 2, for capital like destroyer u need 4~6.
4. ????
5. never had this problem...they seems to move around objects just fine ...except for mission 6 (or was it 7?) where ur fleet need to navigate through the asteroid field...thats normal (i lost my captured destroyer in that mission =_=")
6. uhhh.....no complaints here.

Playing the remastered, there are some issues which I feel the original is vastly superior. When playing as the Kushan, I noticed it is dumbed down:-
1) The support frigate and support corvette has an extremely short healing beam. In the original the healing beam is at least a frigate's length and it is a huge water spray compared to a trickle in this version. Now the support frigate/corvette need to be right next to the ship you are repairing before it even starts repairing.
2) Formations are USELESS. UTTERLY USELESS. I cannot have a wall of frigates like last time. No sphere of defenders around a friendly ship. No claw of bombers swallowing a capital ship.
4) Construction queue system is weird. Can construct 2 things at a time? Last time the mothership can build multiple items at the same time so long you have money
5) More options when it comes to resources. I want resource injections every 1 minute

Also, the heavy cruiser is now extremely overpowered. I recall its ion beams isn't so overpowered and the range isn't very far. Now it has high health, no weaknesses since you cannot destroy the ion beam sub-system and has super dooper range.

From what I can see, it is the HW 1 units in a HW2 environment. Hence the way the support frigate and corvettes act the same like the HW2 repair unit. Also the resource collector works the same like the HW2 resource collector.

Then the bugs I encountered, in 1 skirmish game the battle and fleet command chatter just stop. No more battle chatter from my units anymore. So the rest of the battle very silent. Still got sound effects though.

Atleast the salvage corvettes still works thumbup.gif managed to capture a few HW2 carriers and destroyers in skirmish haha.

You dont need to play HW1 to understand HW2. They have their own separate story going, although they are some reference to HW1.

Though i find that HW1 was much harder in the remastered.

homeworld:shipbreakers will be on kharak, and it would be a prologue to homeworld 1.

The intitial idea was to be like Ground control fighting for ship wreckage for resources.

what happened to the game?

QUOTE
Having been a fan of real-time strategy games since the mid-90s, there aren't many titles in the genre that I haven't played. The original Command & Conquer had me hooked and I also spent my share of hours with Dune and Warcraft releases. At the time, RTS games were so similar in look and feel that it was relatively easy to move between them.

That changed in 1999 with the arrival 'Homeworld', the first RTS that allowed players to move through three-dimensional space. Built on the custom Homeworld engine, Relic Entertainment's 3D RTS was praised for its mind-blowing graphics, gameplay and other features, winning both IGN and PC Gamer's game of the year award in 1999.

Given Homeworld's success (and the positive response to the non-canon Homeworld: Cataclysm made by Barking Dog Studios), it was no surprise when Relic and Sierra returned in 2003 with a proper sequel, nor was it a surprise when Homeworld 2 received largely positive reviews with features including a modified engine for even better graphics.

After three successful releases, you may be wondering why it's been so long since you've heard about the series. Roughly a year after Homeworld 2 launched, creator Relic Entertainment was purchased by THQ for nearly $10 million. However, while Relic did develop Homeworld, publisher Sierra Entertainment owned the intellectual property.

As THQ was considered to be a competitor of Sierra, the prospect of a Homeworld sequel remained unlikely until November 2007 when THQ confirmed that it had acquired a license for the Homeworld franchise. Even so, the company didn't confirm a sequel, maintaining that it had no comments about future games based on Homeworld from THQ.

Nothing much was said in respects to new release for the series until 2011 when Relic confirmed that it wanted to make Homeworld 3, but without actually saying if the game was in development. Further setbacks crushed the chances of Homeworld making a comeback when THQ went bankrupt and moved to liquidate its assets in early 2013.

Also read: Homeworld Remastered gameplay impressions, the return of an almost perfect game

The company ended up being sold to Sega, though the Homeworld IP was not included in that sale, instead being acquired by Gearbox Software for $1.35 million. Gearbox's initial plan was to bring existing Homeworld games to digital sales platforms, but the company also created a forum for fans to exchange ideas about how the series should proceed.

In July 2013 Gearbox announced the release of Homeworld HD and Homeworld 2 HD along with the original versions of the games for 2014. In March 2014 Homeworld HD was renamed to Homeworld Remastered Collection, which finally hit Steam last week for $35 and includes the original and remastered versions of Homeworld and Homeworld 2.

Although Homeworld fans haven't been lucky enough to receive a brand new game, they are able to relive the magic of 1999 and 2003 at high resolutions with a full graphical makeover. The remastered versions have high-res textures and models, new visual effects, recreated cinematic scenes, and support for HD, Ultra HD and 4K resolutions.

Gearbox recommends gamers have at least a basic quad-core CPU and either a GeForce GTX 560 or Radeon HD 5850 (1GB). Homeworld Remastered uses OpenGL3.3 so we don't expect the kind of DX11 features in Evolve for example, but it still has the potential to be quite demanding with players having the ability to build well over 100 ships.
Testing Methodology

We used the latest AMD and Nvidia drivers on 30 graphics card configurations covering all price ranges. Our test rig was outfitted with the Intel Core i7-5960X to remove CPU bottlenecks that could influence high-end GPU scores.

We used Fraps to record 120 seconds of gameplay for benchmarking. Real-time strategy games are quite different from first person shooters when it comes to benchmarking and Homeworld Remastered is particularly tricky.

A well designed first-person shooter should offer fairly consistent frame rates throughout a level. RTS games on the other hand typically start off with extremely high frame rates as there are few units for the GPU to render and for the CPU to calculate. As the unit count increases, the frame rate tends to drop and once a major battle takes place this is typically when you will see the lowest frame rates.

Homeworld Remastered was tested in a similar manner to StarCraft II. We played a skirmish with seven AI-controlled players in a 4v4 match. The resources were set to their maximum value and we went with a 15 minute build time so players could reach critical mass. Just moments before the first major battle was set to take place we made a save which could be loaded repeatedly.

As the test starts over 200 of my own ships engage the enemy and all hell breaks loose for two minutes. With the GTX 980 frame rates were initially around 140fps at 2560x1600 but that dipped down to 50fps as the ships began to engage each other.

So if we were to benchmark the game in the building stage, gathering resources and what not, then frame rates would be around three times higher than what we are going to show during our massive battle scene, so keep that in mind.

QUOTE(SoraDestiny @ Feb 27 2015, 10:02 AM)
well... i found a few bugs on homeworld remastered version....

1. tutorial keep continuing without me hitting the "OK" button

*
2) they are awesome at supporting fighter squads since support corvs can only allow single fighter docking.
admittedly, carriers are better as they are more durable, can rebuild, and hyperspace.
but if left vulnerable or low on RU, your carrier is fucked.

additionally, support frigates are better at supporting capitals too since they are again, more durable, and *seems to* repair faster than support corv (or in hw2, lol resource collectors)

3) nope, you just need a LOT of salvage corv (hw1) or marine frigate (hw2) to perform it properly.
for hw1, it is a bit "micro intensive" especially when capturing heavy cruisers/super capitals.

example:
iinm it takes 8 salvage to capture a heavy cruiser, all 8 needs to properly "cling" it to perform a successful capture. if you just take 8, at any time 1 of them dies (which they do EASILY as heavy cruiser cannons are fairly accurate, 1 shots anything below frigates, and they can even self fire the attached corvettes) the capture is a fail and you need to keep sending more.
cap of salvage corv is 14, so if you want a better chance, have decoy fire, and send ALL 14 to attempt it.
if any salvage corv die, the next will take it's place (if it doesn't just select all and right click again)

fun fact: you can capture beyond your population cap and yes at some point in the campaign i had 4 heavy cruisers LOL!

4) better than original, 1 queue per mother/carrier

6) utilize alt key (for single) or alt + left click box select (For multi) or the control group double tap/f key

camera is non issue imho but then again i've played a lot of hw1/hw cata/hw2 back in the 1999/y2k ++

maybe its just you, but for me:
2. they repair my ships just fine....try this; instead of having them in the strike group, have them guard that strike group...also..set them as passive/neutral stance...if u put them on aggressive they will focus on enemy instead of providing repair support (just a theory...memory a bit hazy after 10yrs not playing)
5. never had this problem...they seems to move around objects just fine ...except for mission 6 (or was it 7?) where ur fleet need to navigate through the asteroid field...thats normal (i lost my captured destroyer in that mission =_=")
*
2) the guard order is a bit buggy for hw1 (didnt notice much on hw2 since i use my collectors more on collection lol)
so you need to periodically y select box, and then guard order again to ensure follow (as the y select will cease once all full health and they will just sit there)

5) no issue here, just need to z axis properly tongue.gif
also, when you're at the station you will get radiation as you leave the asteroid field, so take it out asap or ensure full hp before engaging.
additionally, a nice trick is to lure AI into the field and take on an empty/defender (these take up most of the time as im ion frigate heavy lol) net station haha

*
1) the beam length is about the same.
or at least, i didn't really noticed much of a difference as i am able to heal just fine (need to micro workaround that stupid y/guard order issue)

2) aren't those in the Shift + f key formation hotkeys as well? didn't really pay attention as i mainly do capital walls.

heavy cruisers aren't so bad. i take em out or capture them just fine tongue.gif
but then again, i usually have overwhelming numbers overpowering anything laugh.gif

I just finished the campaign in hw 1 classic as the taiidani. To my surprised the the cut scenes and voiceovers for some dialog has been changed so that you are fighting the evil Kushan empire rather than the Taiidani. Like captain Elson mentioned that the Kushan empire is corrupt instead of the usual cut scene where the Taiidani empire will be mentioned instead. Then at the end you get to destroy the banana mother ship in Kushan elite guard colors.

Also, resource gathering is a pain. I actually let my harvester go about its thing in the Kadeshi mission and do other thing like build a Lego set in front of the monitor. Another terrible mission is the ghost ship mission where the resources are scattered over the entire map. That mission is a short one, but the asteroids are all over the map!!!

At the end I stole about 55 ion cannon frigates from the second last mission. Plus 4 turanic ion frigate and 4 kadesh multi beam frigates. The last mission was stupidly easy and I was so in control of the battle that captain Elson never showed up!!

Have not played the remastered hw 1 campaign yet. Heard got a lot of game breaking bugs.

So true! In the last mission my 1 dozen salvage corvettes overwhelmed 1 attacking heavy cruiser and still have left over to steal 1 destroyer after they snag a heavy cruiser. If only I can record how hilarious it was stealing frigate after frigate in the hyperspace inhibitor mission. All you have to do is:-
1) Lure a group of frigates with a group of scouts.
2) Move the scouts away from the group, preferably some distance so that the frigates never reach those scouts.
3) Slowly command a pair of salvage corvettes for each frigate as they move to attack the scouts. They will totally ignore your corvettes as long as the scouts are still alive and they never see your corvettes when you first lure them.

I know right I did the same thing too I had my scouts on way point move around my banana ship and they did notthing but just chase my scouts around and as long as my souts are moving those ion frigates cant even touch my scouts

all I have to do is just to harvest as many ion frigates as i can.

I had 80 of those ion frigates in the end

but when I start my next mission when they warp in they are being arranged so long that they line up till the end of the map and I had to take a long long time for them to gather next to the mother ship to prevent the astroid from hitting my banana ship

generally the game still uses HW2 multiplayer netcode that isnt very good for high ping and unstable connections, i mean thats the reason why the devs decided to region lock the MP in the first place.

The devs did mention about it in the gearbox forum, and they are looking for alternative to resolve the issue.

But its kinda of weird, that i dont really have much of a network issue playing HW2 in 2004/5. Its still very much playable to DOW style of lag. But back then latency to AUS was 150ms and USA West was 250ms.

TM ADSL was available at my place back in 1998, but for certain areas only. I remember it was RM80/mth, and my parents still complain thats expansive, and guess what 2015 had to pay RM150/mth with poorer latency than before.

back in those days ADSL was consider premium service, hardly anyone considered getting them. The network was less congested and i believe had better routing.

I could play RTW:ET on Canberra server with ~130ms.

I think the Remastered HW1 is much easier than the original. Into the final mission, I have salvaged like 5 Heavy Cruisers but the game keeps crashing every 5 mins so I can't finish it lol.

Heard got a lot of game breaking bugs.

because what the internet reports is that they lost the original code for Cataclysm. then again - alot of HW fans do not consider Cataclysm as canon to the HW storyline.

In other news, Gearbox is slowly releasing all HW ship models on Sketchfab. Those with 3D printers will definitely want to look at this smile.gif
