Make sure that you only paint 1 layer at a time, if you need to paint another layer, then make sure that the first layer is fully dried(i usually wait 1 day). Also priming the surface first helps a whole lot. |

QUOTE(Fasap @ Jan 21 2007, 11:06 PM) ahhh.. the primrose is just toooo sweeet! so did u bought the jap version DHM to get that baby? Marker's easier to use I guess. But I tend to use a mix of everything these days, depending on what I need to do talking about coloring.. which one is better, hand painted (i.e tamiya paints etc.) or marker painted? planning to color my Hrududus and upcoming Primrose, but dunno what to use.. paint or markers..? am having doubts of hand painting.. but after seeing a forumer hand painted his hazel a few pages back im now keen to do so.. any tips/tricks on how to have an even spread of paint? Anyways, hand painting tips and tricks. One of the biggest problems with hand painting is getting an even spread of paint. Spray's far better for that purpose, but with patience and practice, you should be able to get it by hand painting too. For me, its a combination of: - paint mix - brush type - layering I mix Tamiya and Citadel paints for my base coat, on a one to one ratio. Tamiya 'cause the thinner base allows it to form an even spread better, and Citadel 'cause the paint pigments r better. Brush type, I use a flat (size 8 is my general purpose one). Smaller flat brushes might come in handy for the small areas. After doing the Tamiya and Citadel mix, I thin it down. The first coat almost never conceals the plastic fully. The purpose of the first coat is just to form a layer for subsequent coats to stick on better. Basically by using paint that's rather thinned down, its possible to apply multiple layers without risking the paint getting too thick, and also allowing for a more even spread. edit: one more thing. handling of blacks and whites. Painting pure black and pure whites tends to be one of the biggest challenges, as you will need a really pure white or pure black evenly throughout to prevent the end result from looking sloppy. So I don't bother with trying for pure black or pure white. I put a tiny drop of black into my white mix, and also a tiny drop of white into my black mix. Its easier to get a color that's a tiny shade darker than white than getting pure white. Most times you wont be able to tell the diff at all, and it does help to form a more even coat. Same goes for blacks too. This post has been edited by fyire: Jan 22 2007, 12:39 AM |

One good way to understand what I mean when it comes to the paint mix is to test it out for yourself. Get a piece of scrap plastic, and try painting something like Tamiya white on it, then Citadel white on another part, and compare the difference in the color and the finishing. Then try mixing both together and painting another part to compare the difference. Oh yah, that paint mix thingy? It dun apply to all colors. That's the other thing to learn by experience too. I guess the most frustrating thing here is that different colors from different brands of paint tends to behave in different manners, not just in color, but in texture too. Small stuff for diorama sets, I guess you can look for those Tamiya military sets. |
