Hi sifus. Newbie here and i will be purchasing a new dahon vybe as soon as stock is available. Since the vybe comes only with 7 speed, im thinking of upgrading it in the near future to higher speed. What are my options and whats the cost like? Do i need to change the wheel set as well?

QUOTE(azamunekurone @ Dec 9 2014, 11:15 AM) aiyok Woohoo..thanks for the detailed explanation(big thank you). This really get me thinking if i should get another bike instead of the vybe. I decided on the vybe because i like the frame design and that its made of alu which doesnt rust but i did hear that its gona be more work and money to upgrade the gearing system on vybe compared to other bikes but definately wasnt expecting this haha. Will the difficulty level of upgrading the gearing system on a broadwalk be much lower and any cheaper? Or maybe if i show the specs that you typed earlier to the kedai basikal i wonder if they are willing to do it for me lol. Im sure its gona cost me a more significant amount too since i have 0 kangtaodidnt notice this,..sori ok,vybe is a bike that u need to spent more to upgrade bcoz of the wheels.unless u can get boardwalk d8 or speed p8 if im not mistaken its freehub wheel 1st and for all the wheelset.if u can find cheapo wheelset as long as it use freehub with quick release and not freewheel.the freewheel like original vybe and only can use up to 8 speed max. like me, im using novatech hub coz dont want tu change the wheelset.besides, this hub is for mtb diskbrek got 32hole and i bought it quite cheap rather than change the wheelset.so i change it,but the front fork u need to force it open to fit the hub.original vybe wheel are 28spoke,so there is no problemo using 32hole hub! after change the wheelset,u are open to upgrade what ever u want for me i used 9 speed 11-25 sunrace cassette pairing with shimano sora RD taken out from my verge p9.oh ya,not to forget you must find hanger for rd also as neos rd are place in front.as for the crank i use shimano sora also, but this one its a compact crank sizing 50/34 bought 2nd.this is the reason why im pairing with road cassette rather than mtb cassette.as for the FD i also use the Sora and bought some cheapo rm40 hanger unbrand from the net.setting the fd its hard and took 3 hours to tune it right by my friend. as for shifter, shimano have an option to use hybrid flat bar shifter for road but the price is quite pricey!so i took an alternative using the mtb shifter so i bought shimano alvio shifters. so the cost rought estimated i upgred for current setup: Shimano alvio shifter RM150 Shimano Sora FD RM100 FD Hanger RM40 RD Hanger RM30 Shimano Sora 50/34 Crank RM100 (new price is RM250 and comes with BB) Shimano 105 Hollow BB FOC took from my 105 groupset Shimano Sora RD FOC took from verge p9 (new price is around RM150) Novatech Hub RM50 (new is around RM300) Jagwire Cable Housing - RM30 (i use only for gear and not the brakes) Schwalbe Marathon Racer 1.50 - RM85 for pair (new is RM85/unit) Avid brake lever FOC took from verge p9 (new price RM70/pair) Sram grips RM40 so the total cost is around RM625 consider some used parts lah.not to mention my front and rear rack and other accessories like Brooks saddle, bags and so on lah |

QUOTE(azamunekurone @ Dec 10 2014, 08:50 AM) never tried the boardwalk d8 coz no body own it in ipoh. When you say to upgrade the crank..the crank is the part where the peddal is connected and the front gear disc right? So i can add a piece of crank to it, a derrailuer and a shifter to it and it will get me to 16 speed right since the the bike is 8 speed? Also if i add a smaller disc crank at the front, i realize i will now have 16 gear choices, but will this makes my bike go faster or will it make climbing easier? My guess is climbing will be easier right? Also i wonder why would ppl prefer single chainring rather than 2 as with 2 you will get more gear choices. Haha sorry im realy newbie.but for me if u wanna cheaper upgred, just upgrade the crank.from single chainring to double chainring.its more efficient and economy rather than upgrade the cassette only..just think, from 7 @ 8 speed,u will get 14 @ 16 speed and many different ratio by just upgrading the crank.depends on people.few person i met like folding with single chainring only.. i love my vybe, and its a cool frame design with some curvy straight shape without a chainstay (cheaper compare to MU models with no chainstay).i wont sell it in the future, but maybe will give it to my sister as for now im funding for a new speed p8 for touring purpose! In my point of view i you love the frame bro, just bought it.for me frame are important.other parts can upgrade later.slowly see buy n sell and find many cheap2 parts and upgrade ur bike.lucky here in malaysia we cannot buy only frame for folding bike For the broadwalk i did some reading and i found that its much easier if you wana upgrade the gearing. So i assume its opposite of what vybe is and you dont need to change wheel set. Its only a few hundred difference but i really like vybe frame alot. So if its possible to just add 1 or 2 crank disc at the front that will give me option of 16 to 24 speed. That sounds like a huge upgrade haha |

QUOTE(azamunekurone @ Dec 10 2014, 02:48 PM) yap, I have truely been enlightened by your inputs. Thanks so much sifu. I think this will be my approach to upgrade my bike and i cant wait.the crank is the disk connected to the pedal.vybe original crank cannot add a new disk @ chanring besides the big one.oh ya,not to mention original vybe crank size 46t.so the option u will adopt to buy a new crank @ 2nd with complete sealed bearing bb @ hollow bb size 50/34 or 53/39 or 56/42. when u upgrade the crank, add on shifter and fd+fd hanger u will add more gear versatile and its easy for climbing and speed since the new crank are bigger than the stock one.. if i dont have any parts option on the time i upgrade my vybe, of coz i will find 8speed cogs, http://www.bicyclebuysell.com/item/254079/...-34t-screw-type put double chainring crank, install the fd with shifter and get the 16speed gear for the vybe without changing the hub.plus, the stock 7speed rd can tune up to 8speed without changing the rd.. |

QUOTE(blackz90 @ Dec 14 2014, 02:06 PM) Hi guys, looking for a folding bike for my gf Since lady user and its hilly, get bikes with more gears. Also need mention your budget. There 1 bike called amis with 24 gears taiwan brand at about rm1k. Life time warranty for the frame.whats a decent bike (perhaps dahon brand will be good) for general use and perhaps in the future round island. Staying in penang alot hilly routes Chewahh i havent gotten a bike myself but started teaching ppl lol. QUOTE(H2D @ Dec 14 2014, 02:10 PM) I did aome looking on tern bikes but never seen this tern d16. The only bike that i felt really eager is the verge p20 but way over budget but rodalink got diacount make it very tempting u know...Tern d16 rm2.3 seems like a good choice brooo. I check at baikbike but the spec didnt mention the frame. Does it chromoly or aluminium? Earlier you auggested dahon visc p18 but upon closer look, i dont like the frame design. So i went on and found dahon mu p27. More gear and the frame looks okay. Dahon mu p27 vs tern d16. Any inputs anyone? I know im an askhole but i promise its coming to an end lol. QUOTE(blackz90 @ Dec 14 2014, 06:03 PM) she's sport newbie thats why op for folding bikes, she says roadbike, mtb even hybrid bikes are intimidating looking, so Then amis 2.1 should be a good start rm1k for her to test of she like cycling. If she decide to upgrade you still have 2.5k to burn in future. Or another bike h2d suggested earlier is dahon visc d18 also a good choice QUOTE(H2D @ Dec 14 2014, 06:28 PM) frame alu, fork steel... for d16... Ok thanks. Thanks alot i will try to look around some more. Visc looks like a good setup for a recreation cyclist too bad i didnt like the frame. It should look very good for the ladies toomup27 is old model i think , not sure stil got old stock? better tht u ask bike shop, and go check out. for 2015 not sure guanchow will bring in visc p18/d18..... if they don't, then really stupid of them..... |

Hi guys. I came a cross a discussion in tern forum where tern bike frames breaks in half and in most cases riders got injured. Reckon from the pictures they should fall really akward going forward.
Thread starter reported her case somewhere around december 2013. I browse thru 7 pages and saw photos of link d8 a verge x10 frame patah. All of it patah at the same spot. Most cases are uk and 1 of them from israel. Rode bike 10 months and frame patah.. Funny thing is someone wrote that the forum used to be open for everyone to read but after this case, you can still participate and read but you need to create an id and login to view the whole thread. This not considered isolated case rite? 8 cases reported so far. Any such cases in malaysia? How la...was planning to get tern d18 now takuting hahha Anyone got follow this? Has tern release anything on this? Are thier frame safe now? http://www.ternbicycles.com/at/forum/tern-...me-shearing-two This post has been edited by handsomedog: Dec 15 2014, 09:53 AM |

QUOTE(SJ18 @ Dec 15 2014, 12:13 PM) Besides Dahon Vybe, I also have the Amis FAC 2.1 24speed and it's a great bike to ride. The frame is sturdy yet feels light. No creaking sound and able to climb pretty well. However some minor setbacks about it is that the mid section of handlebar does not come with 2 rubber washers to hold the entire handlebar in position when you release the lock during folding. As a result, the bar slides left to right and vice versa quite easily, thus causing a lot of scratch marks. Was frustrated when I can't find such Great to know you enjoyed the bike and the white look real awesome. Is it posibble for you to show how the rubber washers look like?parts from local bike shops. Finally solved it when I found similar looking washers for sale in Tokyo 😃. Overall, no regrets with the Amis and fast becoming my fav bike ... Is it like these? Expensive omg.. http://m.aliexpress.com/item/1613804763.html This post has been edited by handsomedog: Dec 15 2014, 04:17 PM |

QUOTE(etigge @ Dec 20 2014, 01:16 PM) I don't know what bike you get or what saddles are you using but since it is your first ride, it might not be the saddle. Even if you buy an expensive gel saddle, it will not help. Most probably, I think is your butt has not got used to it. And also you were pushing the limits a bit. Pushing the ,limits is not your stamina but more on how long can your butt withstand sitting on the saddle. OFF COURSE a good saddle helps though. Some can pedal at high resistance for 3 hours in a gym but once on the road, it is a different matter. Just ride slowly and enjoy first. Then increase time gradually and see if it still pains. Yea i think i got a little excited and pushed a little to far yesterday. Legs are extreme wobbly and the butt sore was terrible. Was planning for a night ride but have to cancel cause it stings! One thing I know is, after so long of riding, my butt still pains if I push too hard. Once it pains, you have to endure it the whole ride! Today i tested to ride and the sore was lesser so went on a leisure ride at desa park. Just got back but the pain didnt get worse. So i think you are rite..wasnt really the saddle but the intensity Also the terain today is less bumpy. Thanks for the tip etigge! I ride on a d16 btw |

QUOTE(akioen @ Dec 21 2014, 02:04 PM) after a morning ride today, i've encountered few issues of my new dahon d8: You can tighten the seat post clamp yourself. It should do the trick. As for the sound on the hinge, maybe you can try putting some thick grease around the conjoining part. Mine was greased when i got my bike and there were no sound at all but today morning ride it started creaking again. Was my 3rd ride. Maybe i need to get some grease.- the seatpost slipping, and caused the seatpost some scratches - sound from the hinge of the handle post is obvious - and there are other sound which i can't identify from which part of bike did i get a lemon set of bike? hmm... I have a question myself. I saw those bike chain cleaner device selling online. You clamp it onto your bike chain it cleans the chain for you when you rotate the pedal. Is this how you guys clean the chain? Is this device any good? |
