Im currently using Michelin Pilot Super Sport and need to replace them soon. Very happy with this tyre. Road grip and handling was excellent especially in wet weather. The tyre cuts through water very well too. But its very expensive and once the tyre wears, the road noise increases considerably.

Am now in a dilemma whether to replace with similar PSS or go for more comfort based tyres? The Michelin PS3 is also noisy but much cheaper.

I think the best choice between comfort and handling is actually the Goodyear Assy 2 which is made in Germany. This tyre also comes with 6 months Worry Free Assurance which guarantees a free replacement for any tyre damage.

Opinions please.

Is the V105 quieter than the Assy 2? Best price i got so far was for Michelin PS3 from Hin Leong, Klang at RM600 per tyre (week 37).

I think PS3 should be the best value for money in the above choices if you don't want to spend much on PSS or F1A2.
Advan Sport V105 is claimed to be on PSS level but in most tests it's not even as good as F1A2 or PS3. Advan DB might be the quietest but it's on a much lower performance level the others.
Btw you might want to also consider Continental Sport Contact 5, coz in most tests it's also often matching PS3 & F1A2.

PS3 is UHP which isn't the same level as Max performance category.

do consider comparing tires of the same category, and quite honestly no tires have matched up against PSS even until today.
The only drawback is the pricing which TS is reluctant to spend on again.

Ive got an offer for Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy 2 for RM730 per piece. But tyres are Jan 2013. Since these tyres are manufactured in Germany, i guess the age is fine?

i wouldn't mind them myself since my daily ride tires tend to wear faster in mileage than their age.

Sorry I've read a few tests before, cannot recall anymore were or which websites. Most are always topped by either PS3, F1A2, or CSC5. Advan Sport was never top even though included in those comparisons. Or maybe they're the older version hence not so good. I know someone in my club also who uses this tire and said he was disappointed for the price he paid (so not because it's bad but he feels it's too expensive for the performance it gives i.e. not worth it).

Yes PSS is actually like a class of its own, that's why price also like that.

you must be confused with the old advan sport and the newer advan v105

in fact, theres few feedback that Yokohama S drive is better than PS3 in dry grip/heat cycles. Both are UHP, and that's fair/reasonable.
Advan sport v105 is on max performance and performance should be on par, if not better. in addition to better comfort/NVH.

Max performance category is basically for people who want EVERYTHING in their tires, and don't mind paying a premium.

S-Drive better than PS3? Hmm seldom hear about that. S-Drive is also directional so normally won't have as much cornering grip as asymmetrical ones like PS3 since asymmetrical tires use big tread blocks on the outer side which increase cornering grip (that is provided the compound is about the same). I heard S-Drive is already very old tire model, right? How much is it btw, cheaper than PS3?

dry yeah, however wet and nvh ps3 is better, so most people would prefer ps3 as a good all rounder.

directional is actually better for the most part except for nvh purposes.
if you haven't realized, the huge majority of extreme tires, semi slicks are pretty much directional. with only few exceptions such as bridgestone and michelin taking a different approach going asymmetric, and utilizes superior compound to offset the minor disadvantage of being asymmetrical (although that itself has numerous advantages over directional, mainly on inner/outer compound/tread designs)

i mean, if large shoulder blocks is what you're after, S drive have really huge ones as opposed to the smaller ones on ps3, with grooves in between and within the blocks, on 1 side only no less:


so just by shoulder blocks alone, you can tell which will have an advantage.

However with damn thick (and most likely stiff) shoulder blocks, almost semi slick looking, your biggest drawback will be nvh.

as for s drive pricing, if you're talking about 15" sizes, it's about c drive 2 price thanks to YHI's recent promotion on Yokohama S drive.

Yeah I suppose Michelin or other Asy tires can be superior partly also by using different compounds for outside compared to inside, hence you get good performance/grip while maintaining lower noise level. I'm using F1-D5 now and when new it's just a little noisy but now after 40+k km it's even more noisy. Grip is good though, both dry & wet. Maybe next tire change I'll consider this S-Drive as well since it's among the few UHP that has the odd sizes I want (225/50/17 & 245/45/17) provided it's still available with attractive prices.
