For compact to prosumer cams, 'below RM100' is good enough, but not those RM55 plastic ones lar wahlau ... sweat.gif

Those that comes with your package is good enough i.e Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. OEM tripods should be good enough for their own brand of cameras what ... biggrin.gif

happy.gif it is secure to use tripod on malaysian street?

Good question ... see what you done? ac98 is going to be Long Air again! mad.gif tongue.gif

1. Use a tripod wisely : When you really have to leave your camera mounted and unattended for a period of time, say 10 seconds for a Portrait/Group photo, be sure that it's within your reach and of course running distance should someone decides to have a good dash for your precious investment. My relative lost her camera in Shanghai in a busy tourist spot and another friend of mine her BF lost a Valentine's Day present which is a digicam in France, when you think the LEAST those Mat Salleh won't gasak your things!

2. Not really relevant to this topic but had to warn you all :Never ever let a stranger use your camera to shoot you or shoot your group. It happened even in Malaysia that the bugger took a dash for it after the shot at Super GT last year. I first heard it happened to my relative during her China trip where the guy cabut after taking her photo, pity her only one girl there and it's her only camera. As a result, she bought another digicam in China, which lasted her only 3 weeks, after that kaput-ed! (Won't mention the brand coz I think it's a fake one using the brandname, I checked)

3. Check your Tripod before making a purchase :
- Take out the tripod from it's plastic/casing. Always ask for a new one, dun buy the demo tripod! (You're not THAT desperate right ...)
- Unlock and loosen everything, dun leave any levers or locks partialy tightened. That way you will remember all the levers and locks and won't forget to tighten any of them later.
- Spread all the legs (tripod legs I mean) and tighten all the locks/levers on a level ground. If it has a water level dun worry about it, it's not important becoz it's mostly cosmetic. REAL water levels that WORK cost a BOMB to own!
- Firmly press on the tripod head with your palm and see if the legs will bend under the stress. They should not bend under that kind of stress, unless you put pull strength on it.
- Decide on your purchase! rolleyes.gif

A manfrotto does not necessarily cost 4 digits.

I got a 190ProB and a 286 RCII Ballhead for under RM600.
It is steady enough to hold a budget RM800 telephoto on a D70 at 300mm for a 15 second exposure outdoors with a moderate amount of wind.

I suggest you visit Eng Tong, they are a distributor for the tripods and gave the best price i've come across.
Whatever it is, try to get a good ballhead. It will make your life alot easier.

Yeah, agreed. I dun recommend bomb-costing tripods/monopods as well.
It's like trying to lift a textbook using a forklift blink.gif tongue.gif

Water level? I have never heard of water level. I know of spirit level, though.

And they are not cosmetic. In built spirit levels can come in very useful, especially if an external flash is sitting in the hotshoe and you can't plug an external spirit level because of that.

Built in spirit levels on the tripod itself isnt much use...

IMO, the ones on the tripod head or camera flash shoe that moves with the camera are most useful.

Google Jobu Sprit Level... i think Shashinki has it.
if possible, just turn on the grid in your viewfinder (not sure about canon, but the nikon slr's have them) to align your horizons.

Yeah I love to write but still learning. I dun like to sound long winded sad.gif
They say good writers define more points rather than going round-and-round. Sometimes I feel that I am going round-and-round ... I need more points sad.gif

Yeah I know you heard of spirit level, but one did fell off my last 2 tripods, which cost less than RM100 ones. It's water in there I know, coz one of them actually DRIED up on me! blink.gif Those are cosmetics, to make any chiplak tripod look 'pro' and 'expensive' ...

manfrotto 190 legs are one of the most affordable and best tripods around... get it with a 141RC or ball head, which ever floats your boat.

me personally have the 055 + 141RC + 222RC. i can change the head depending on which camera i am using and what type of photos i am doing.

it's good... but heavy.

One happened to fall when I was using my Nikon FM10, mounted with a Metz flash. Thank God it fell onto a carpet. Imagine, I paid THOUSANDS for a SLR and it fell mounted onto a RM99 tripod ... bang head man!!

Never EVER mount your DSLR on 'gift' tripods!!

I tried, lucky nothing went wrong. rclxm9.gif

Wah, Im planning on a trip, so whats a good tripod (reasonable price with steady arms/legs and lightweight) for travel? I wouldn't want to bring a 3KG tripod for my trip...
