I thought there was a  couple of case Tesla S caught fire and burnt.

Btw, saw a charging station for Nissan Leaf in IPC/Ikea there in the carpark.

It is possible. However those cars were involved in an accident or pierced by some heavy metal piece from below (the ride height is quite low on the highway to make it more slippery, but that means stuff on the road is more likely to hit it). The Tesla is armoured from below to protect the battery, so imagine this had happened to a normal car! They did thicken the armour and won't lower the car as much anymore (issued a software update). The fire is also rather slow, not an explosion. You'll have plenty of time getting out of the car if it does indeed happen.

Also petrol cars are much more likely to start a fire, but it happens so often that it's not news. Unlike it is some super car.

It's much more likely to die from alcohol or cigarettes than from terrorism, but people are motr scared of terrorism because that's what is on the news.

Better switch to electric vehicles.

When driving internal combustion engine cars, there is a metal block a few feet from your balls with thousands of explosions happening in it every minute  icon_question.gif

The worst explosion involving car engines due to never changed engine oil only punched a hole through the engine block. Even that doesn't damage anything else apart from the engine block.

Instead, you use electric vehicles with larger batteries, the risk is much higher than you driving petrol/diesel powered combustion engines. There was an old case where standard 12v car battery exploded due to overcharge. Imagine you sitting on large battery on the floor of your car's chassis crossmember, an explosion would be deadlier.

Cars that caught fire either:
1) the wiring has been messed with especially Ah Beng who modified their car to have powerful audio hi-fi system.
2) the car engine's fuel supply line & electrical wiring design are badly located like old BMW that has the fuel supply line passing over the dynamo, when there's leakage, the fuel drops directly on the alternator that a single spark could cause fire. In old Merc C-Class, the insulation soft padding was badly fitted being too close to the engine hot exhaust that it risk catching fire easily as the heat causing it to burn. The padding is light blue in colour separating the engine compartment from passenger compartment.
3) Japanese, Korean cars rarely to never catch fire in accident compared to conti in the old days. If the conti has realised this and changed their mindset to care more on failsafe common sense instead of focus solely on performance, they would have fix this issue.

actually it's not really one large battery... it's a collection of linked up batteries that forms the battery system of an electric vehicle...

so, chain reaction?
