What a cool looking movie but that's about it. Story, plot, characters doesn't interest me it at all. I literally fall asleep in the middle, really bores me but also previously watching another movie, Life which is more engaging than this and probably got tired. It has some cool sequence that almost bit by bit copy from both gits anime movies. I don't like every major characters of live version one, quite different from the original especially Batou. Can skip this one if you're not interested its cool visuals.

There's no censored on the whole transformation I think. There's not much to look at IMO. Just some synthetic layer in the shape of breast and butt. Much like mystique from xmen.

GITS is one of my all time favourite movie. When it was previously announced that Scarlet is going to be taking up the role, I too am skeptical about it. Both sides give a sorts of reasons but personally I still think they should have went with a more asian looking woman. Anyway, I do like Scarlet as she is a good actress.

As for the movie, after knowing that they almost copy the anime scene by scene, it really turn me off. That means at most it is just on par with the anime. No surprises and so on. Even the iconic Batou character is underwhelming. So I wasn't expecting much from the movie and sure enough after reason the comment here, it shows that I am right. Really dissapointing in some way but I do like that they did not attempt to re-invent the whole movie like a lot of the games/anime to live movie adaptation.

Ghost in the Shell (2017)

This... is maddening.

This is very difficult to write.

Difficult because it got so many things right and at the same time so many things wrong....

What they got right

The production of this movie is OFF THE CHARTS (with a budget of 110 Million dollars)

There are two previous movie that gave me this "wow" factor, namely

1) Star Wars (1976) (Now known as New Hope) (George Lucas coined the term Used Technology)
2) Blade Runner (1982) (when it first released)

Now this movie used the concept of Used Technology to the next level! Bravo!!

The surprising representation of the character Aramaki (by Takeshi Kitano a veteran Japanese actor) wowed me. Kuddos!!!

What they did not

I will be crucified for stating this, Scarlett Johansson. I am very sure alot of you went to this to see her. I just thought she was so... awkward here. I don't think she was quite sure what she was doing and it shows.

I never read the original comics. My introduction to this material was thru the animation Ghost in the Shell (1995). So many of the action sequences in the animation ran rings around this live action movie. It is like DAY and NIGHT!!! Meaning there is NO COMPARISON....

And another signature of the animation is the soundtrack. From the first frame, the very unique soundtrack grabs you and never lets go until the last frame...

If I use cognac to describe the animations soundtrack, the soundtrack of this is.... drain water???

They did use the original soundtrack at the end of this movie, and again very diluted and too little too late...

So, this movie, is a disappointment...

Just my opinion

Urghh...this movie is so dull. Like I said before, the good parts in this comes from the visual and world design which was lifted from the anime anyway. The action some which again lifted from the anime become so boring and just style over substance.

As for everything else --- the new story, the new characterization, the acting...fall flat on its face. F U Rupert Sanders.

5/10

But I thought Motoko Kusanagi's character was describe very emotionless, no expression and dull even in any version of the anime? Except for the lesbian sex part in the comic lah. brows.gif

I will give my review later on soonest possible. But my suggestion for GITS fans is you just go watch it. Its because there are many scenes they used as a homage to the original 1995 anime. As for the people who haven't watch it, its up to you guys whether waiting for jack sparrow to give u free or watch it in cinema where you can treat it as a copy of Blade Runner movie.

Correct, I understand where you are coming from

Where I thought they had to deliver a swan lake (dance wise) they delivered an aggressive hip hop.

This is coming from a dude who read all the manga and anime of GITS.
First of all there are multiple version or iteration of GITS.

The Manga works like an anthology of the Section 9 tales. It's goofy and bloody confusing because of the abstract themes by "pseudo science-ing" it with real world theoretical scientific studies. It's usually an abstract concept that being weaved into a story with action and philosophically debating it among the characters. The puppet master is sort of social studying the hacking culture before it even became a thing and they was even a story of growing human organ in a pig farm. So you get the idea it's about reaching the near future phenomenon that being researched at the present. Just that you have a sexy badass protagonist narrating it while the artist gratuitously drew her as revealing as possible.

The 95 anime is all Mamoru Oshii effort to art house the manga to become a respectful anime that can sell to Cannes and Otakus at the same time. It caught on simply we are at the dawn of the internet age at that junction of the anime release. It resonate with people still having to grasp with what the internet is all about and also became an influence to many beloved films by stating the obvious Matrix.

GITS:Innocence which I admit is a shitshow that when a director over indulge his success and came out looking like a wanker. Reminded me a lot of the current Hollywood version.

GITS:SAC is the long running TV series that did the best of both worlds. It's not abstract to a point you need to crack your skull to understand it while have no issue appealing to traditional anime kakis because there's plenty of shooting and the story does move a lot more faster with a smart storyline to boot. SAC=Stand Alone Complex is a fancy word for flash mob before it was even coined. The theme is random individuals with no ties to each other appear at one location at the same time to accomplish a feat. That explain the build up to the climax of the puppet master hack in the storyline.

GITS:Arise is a reboot and rehash to milk more money from the franchise with all the same ideas and themes explored before. Some hits and misses.

Haha, agreed on this. There is one part where Aramaki summon her to his room and the way she walk was so obviously freaking awkward. She is a high tech cyborg where walking should be just like normal human walking but instead it become like an outdated robot. Like I said, if you don't care about the story, plot, characters just watch it and go for IMAX3D if you can afford it. The visual will left you in awe but otherwise its not as engaging as the original anime movies.

Yeah, I thought that what forum are for. Sharing complaints laugh.gif

Critics are very divisive on this, with those who aren't well versed with the lore pretty much didn't like it or on the fence and so far only see Stuckmann loving it.
