Gold near 3-week low after Fed optimism over US economy

SINGAPORE: Gold was languishing near a three-week low on Thursday after the US Federal Reserve ended its bond-buying stimulus programme and expressed confidence in the economic recovery, dimming bullion's safe-haven appeal.



Spot gold was little changed at US$1,212.60 an ounce by 0031 GMT. In the previous session, gold fell to US$1,208.26 – its lowest since Oct 8, before closing down 1.3%.



US gold futures slid about 1% to US$1,212.80 on Thursday, tracking losses in spot gold.



The Fed on Wednesday ended its monthly bond purchase programme and dropped a characterisation of US labour market slack as "significant" in a show of confidence in the economy's prospects.



In a statement after a two-day meeting, the central bank largely dismissed recent financial market volatility, dimming growth in Europe and a weak inflation outlook as unlikely to undercut progress towards its unemployment and inflation goals.



Gold, often seen as an alternative investment during economic and financial uncertainties, fell on fears that the vote of confidence in the recovery could prompt the Fed to raise interest rates soon.



Bullion, as a non-interest-bearing asset, could take a hit when higher rates are in place.



The US dollar surged higher on Wednesday after the Fed statement, also hurting gold.



In a reflection of investor sentiment, SPDR Gold Trust, the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, said its holdings fell 0.16% to 742.40 tonnes on Wednesday – a six-year low. – Reuters

Ya, many DDD cannot answer UUU's questions. Simple reason is because the market still never DDD after 5-6 years of debating tongue.gif

I think some DDD like bro iceman is very afraid to see our reply/questions to them. It must be very hurtful. Majority DDD has left the discussion because they knew they have missed the boat. Condo price from RM200k to RM600k now. Even if the bubble burst, they can't buy the same condo back at original price 5-6 years ago

My predictions market price will go up
another 15% by end of next year.

But if really go down 20%, i sibeh happy to buy another unit, imagine One South at 320K, Green Terrain 440K, Greenview 360K, rclxms.gif

To expect bubble burst, something got to happen to our economy

--> economy bad --> recession --> unemployment --> people cannot service loan --> fire sale

What will cause Malaysia economy to collapse ?

1. Economy strong. Now growing at 5%+
2. World economy no major bad news like 2007-2010 period
3. Malaysia banks no more easy credit to cut high debt issue
4. Govt debt down (see below link)
5. US QE tapered without incident. Now Euro and China start their own QE
6. Interest rate stable. USA rates remain low despite tapering
7. RM stable. Forex reserve strong very low risk of attack


DDD got to be realistic. Bubble won't burst out of nothing. Looks like something extraordinary has to happen to fulfill DDD's dream. Like a Nuclear war. Otherwise, look like DDD will continue to be disappointed

I am a BTC. What I knew is the price DID increase a lot, and didn't come down

If you are a real economic student, perhaps you may want to explain the phenomenon ?

If you are talking about "price adjustment", you could be right. But that will also closely tie to economic slow down.

If you are talking about bubble burst, please tell me example of countries' property market collapse without economic crisis. Recent ones are USA (sub-prime) and Spain/Greece (country close to bankrupt). And give example on malaysia's experience as well

Economy stable, low interest, people have spared money, trend around the world, World no.1 economy is China, so the rest of the world follow their trends, property/land bank investment has been in China for thousands of years.

Property is a necessity, unlike gold & share one can live without, like it or not you need to lived under shelter, be it rent or buy even tumpang, unless you wanna be a hobo...lol

Quite sure your lecturer would have teach you Abraham Maslow Hierarchy of Need, where Property fall under safety which is 2nd most important after basic like Food & Water.

So how can you says unproductive & no value adding ? in fact property value added every few months..kakaka
