Hi guys,

I want to take photos of my Salt Lamps. So I have an Android Smartphone with 13MP camera. What I want is a way to either install an app or either edit it on PC. If I edit my pictures on my PC due to uneven colors my picture appeared dotted with my photo little damaged.

PLEASE HELP.

That is why you hire a pro to get the results. Seems like it's so easy, right, until you try to do it yourself, huh?

Pros and avid enthusiast spent thousands of dollars and hundred of hours to get it right. It's not just about having a camera and pushing a button and then running it though some editing software.

As above. It's not something we can just post on forum and you'll "oh i get it" and picture comes out great.

A pro, even if they use a phone camera, would've understood how their phone camera behaves and have maximized it to its potential. By maximizing it, it's not just output for screen but it could be maximizing it for further post-processing on the computer.

Once it hits the computer, there's a wealth of possible processes that goes on to enhance the photo to look nice.

Well, it is a skilled job ... in taking the photo, and in the adjustments on computer ... smile.gif

If it's only a handful of photos (<10), send them to me, I'll edit for you.

If more, then you need to learn yourself, or hire someone to do it for you.

Taking the photo: make sure you have good lighting. This usually means very bright. Brighter than what you are comfortable with in your living room at night. Turn off the flash. With the flash attached to the camera (or phone), the result is usually not what you want. Find some place / something to rest your phone on (boxes, a stack of book, etc), to reduce camera shake.

Use a seamless white background, lie the object on the floor on a white card and snap the photo from above, or remove thte background in photoshop. Just position of camera, object, background, lighting, etc, till you get exactly what you want (mostly reduce shadow and glare).

In photoshop: remove any remaining shadow (or background if you didn't start with a plain white background). If your object is a different colour from the background, use the magic wand and select the background (approximately). Shrink the selection a little, then feather it (the exact amount, varies by the picture, and you can only get by trial an error, with experience, you will have an approximate idea on how to adjust, it's like cooking smile.gif ). Use the levels or curves tool to "blow out" the background. Adjust to taste. Save. Then crop and scale to the picture size you want.

This will get you pictures good enough to put on your website. If you want higher resolution pictures for printing, spend more time working on it.

If you want professional quality photos, hire a real pro. smile.gif

you guys are just assuming all Android phone with 13mp camera works the same.

That's the problem with Smartphones - regardless your idea, they could actually work very differently. Some actually works better than others.

even what dkk posted above seems ideal but whether it's workable highly depends on the camera on the phone, which is why shootkk and myself didn't bother to post such details to begin with.

this photo was taken with my android phone camera http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-133389695/...ist-147288449-8 - confirm commercial grade, if not the Stock Photo agency won't approve it.

My detailed list is not going to give him photos he can sell. smile.gif Very far from it. Got to adjust your standards way way way lower. It's like a noob guide for somebody who knows very little. I myself don't know that much.

Point is ... well, click through to his sig and see the posts. I think he just want pictures that look slightly better. smile.gif

biggrin.gif Well actually for phone camera, the HDR mode is very useful.

Your method works for sure, just that if you look at the products he's selling, the exposure is going to be tricky.

If the rock is lit then getting white background is difficult. In fact for the product he's selling, I'd say go with black background when it's lit. White background when not lit.

For white background photo using handphone, one of the best way is to get a lightbox and some white steady lights.

does it have to be from a smartphone?

as others have mentioned, it's not just about using an app and editing on a PC. it's a very detailed process you wont be able to learn from a single post. not to mention ur product is already challenging to photograph.

i'd say the easiest thing you can do (apart from hiring someone to do it...doesnt have to be a professional) is try with a proper digital camera. borrow one if you dont have any. megapixels doesnt matter...almost any digital camera will work better than smartphone cameras.

Well, at least it's significantly better than the older photos. smile.gif Compared to the previous photos, I'll say he's done a good job. smile.gif If scale to 50% or 30%, the imperfections would be even less obvious.

If do Select > Modify > Smooth and Select > Feather, the jaggies and pixelation can be reduce. The shadow, will just have to take more time to remove completely. But even as it is now, TS might already be satisified.

Especially if his objectives is to get merely acceptable quality photos to move his products. He may not want to spend so much time in tweaking the photos. Normal people's standards of acceptable are frequently more forgiving than professionals'. smile.gif

haha well i'm very straight-forward when it comes to opinion on photos. biggrin.gif

one suggestion though TS - the light is now right on top, move the lights forward a bit and you'll eliminate most of the shadows and the product could look better too.

in professional works, we use lights from the side / front / back but never from the top unless you really need to.

that's why people don't do photography at noon, because the sunlight from the top makes everything look bad. shadows under the eyes and all.

same goes to products. that's why people use lights from the side or front, usually a mix. choice of angle depends on the product.

in your case, you are limited and going by what you photographed you only have 1 light. so move it forward a little if you may. this way the products get more light on it while the shadows will move behind the subject.

do that and you'll have less work to do when it comes to post processing.
