thanks guys for all the tips...i realised for the 1st sem i haave been in adelaide, i spent alot...i mean ALOT. i nvr keep track with wat i spent.. and now i suffer hope you dont mind but may i know roughly how much u spend on groceries and other tiny stuff per week? i'm a spendthriff person by nature and now (when im studying in aust) i learn the value of money. sigh. thanks for the tips will record everything single thing down in a book de next time i spend. its really hard and i'm alwys so tempted to buy stuff....which sometimes unneccesary and beyond my means...can u belief it?

I'd say. Streaming from video sites without having to pause. Full speed on all p2p file sharing systems. I'm on TPG, and I'm on the $60/month plan which gives me 30GB. Split between 4 people, that is just slightly above 7GB per person. Seriously, if you do download more than that A MONTH, consider getting a life.

The only problem I have with TPG is their transparent proxy, which can be a bugger if you are a rapidshare person. On the plus side, your IP is static, so no such rubbish as disconnecting/reconnecting to get a good IP, and if you do get banned, its only you. I'm sick and tired of stupid Malaysians who get the whole 60.48.x.x-60.52.x.x range banned. And i ever find who got the whole *.tm.net.my DNS range banned in a certain channel, I'll hunt him/her/it down and kill it.

Price wise, there is very little difference once you take the currency exchange into consideration. Australia is not the pendalaman okay?! You don't have to take all your sundry goods with you. Remember, unless you're flying Business/First, all we have is 20KG.

Are you out of your mind? Honestly, toothpaste is NOT that expensive in Australia, and as discussed a few pages back, it is the basic stuff that is normal in price. I once knew someone who brought 3 packs if Double A paper over to down under. WHY?! Its not like you can't get paper there!

Isn't it an overstatement, that if anyone that uses more than 7 gig per month needs to get a life. Probably from what you are studying, book is relatively direct context to your studies, or maybe your lecturer decides to be all Gandhi and decides to print you notes and distribute it to the class.
Sadly but truly, our lecturers are as cold as stone, as evil as the devil, but in reality, they are actually just lecturers. So being lecturer, they will copy paste lecture notes from previous semesters, and expects students to download it in huge context through the net.

Now, if every lecture notes in .pdf and all other funny formats comes up to 5 mb per piece, and for each subject you have 25 lecture notes, that comes out to xxxxxxxx mb for one subject. Yikes, don't we all have at least 3 subjects to take each semester? Some more, some less.

Third year students are in their thesis/research year, and last i know, my friends have been downloading and surfing for informations that sums up to nearly 20 gig. No life? I wish i can say it to them, but they'll give me a tight slap and ask me to finance their studies.

Or probably, i'm just mixing too much with engineering and computer science student that we need that MUCH of a bandwidth. Or maybe we are stereotyped to be no-life students.
Either way, 7 gig's a lot to others, barely enough to survive past any stage for some. Oh, i'm on TPG highest service, thats 100 gig ADSL+ Premium, and i'm being redundant in saying this, but may i add, we nearly clipped 100 gig the past few months. Talk about sucking up bandwidths. And that is with no torrent, simply because my friend and I have blocked it via router/server. Porn?    Maybe
Truth to be told, everything here is pretty much dollar to dollar, if we are talking about necessities. I could've forgot to add that sarcastic sentiment to my previous post. Though i'm no pope, i'm not lying in saying that it wouldn't be that harsh to bring 10 toothpaste for the entire year. I brought just one, so i'm on the contradictory side. Last i saw, the same tube i find here, is twice the price in Malaysia. And that is not penny wise, pound foolish. That's just small nifty investment. Take for example, Melbournians would know the increase of Sunday Saver from $2.50 to $2.90. I won't say that its penny wise, pound foolish if you end up buying 40 pieces before the price hike. Can't say that unless we really know how some people really spend their money.

Can't compare 3 packs of Double AA with 5-8 toothpaste. 5-8 toothpaste don't even occupy the space or weight of 1 of those papers. That's being plain ignorant. I nearly slapped my friend when he contemplated to even bring one.

You guys ask what is most appopriate to bring.

I say do research, ask around.
Ask what you may enquire.

Ask what books will be appropriate for your studies. That is one thing that i will rather bring then any other necessities.
The book prices here, easily double, triple, and quadruple those in Malaysia.

I remember the Universal adapter I brought from Bunnings cost me about A$10+,
4 port cheap Australian extension board about A$3.50 .

my hostel just emailed me said that my room got internet, and she said its unlimited internet, and she said its broadband =.= dunno why. she said i need RJ45 cable O.o any idea what is that.?

anyway, yeah ethernet cable thingy, i got tat at home. i'll just bring one over then.

i stayed at college square before. no u cant get ur own ISP . unless u get Unwired (wireless broadband ) <- expensive
the internet at college square is downright horrendous. everytime people complained, they made it worse.

to sum it up college square internet
1. SLOW like max speed download is 30kb/s
2. always auto logout from ur internet
3. frigging expensive compared to external ISP
4. shit service

actually one of the reasons why i moved out of college square end of last year
but hey if u can look past the internet service , college square is actually a really decent place to stay.
for now lygon >> swanston in terms of facilities. + its cheaper too.
