The Asia-America Gateway (AAG) is a 20,000-kilometre (12,000 mi) long submarine communications cable system, connecting South-East Asia with the USA mainland, across the Pacific Ocean via Guam and Hawaii.
user posted image

Lately , the cable was broken and cause massive slowdowns in some parts in Asia, including Malaysia. The AAG (Asia America Gateway) cable system connecting Vung Tau – a coastal city in southern Vietnam – and Hong Kong broke near the latter’s coast at 11:41 pm on Monday. Many UniFi users may encounter slow connection to US based server .TMConnects also post a tweet on this incident.
QUOTE
#TMAlerts 1/2 we are experiencing some degradation of data traffic to and from the US due to a fault on the AAG submarine cable system.

QUOTE
#TMAlerts 2/2 repairs are underway to repair a fault on the AAG submarine cable system. We will share updates as they become available

The cable has encountered frequent breaks and outages since its ready for service in late 2009. Most of the outages are located at the intra-Asia segments between Hong Kong and Singapore, while the segment between Hong Kong and the Philippines seems to have less problems. The segments between the Philippines and the U.S. are quite stable.
On July 15, 2014 the segment at Vung Tau, Vietnam, 18 km off the coast of the city central was damaged and the internet bandwidth to international destinations was disrupted.Few days ago, they faces this issue again and whole country has to depend on the land cable.

Repairs are expected to take longer than usual as Hong Kong is being hit by typhoon Kalmaegi.

#UPDATE Repairs to a ruptured international telecom cable won’t finish until October 6 since bad weather has hampered the work, an Internet provider said.

I've been getting crapped for the last 2 weeks on Unishit stuck with the same gateway.

Complaint first time, they close my case straight with no response.

Second time, I straight away threaten them with MCMC, get call on public holiday to apologize and escalate the matter.

Gay fag.

QUOTE(Madd3rz @ Sep 17 2014, 11:34 AM)

But the submarine should have special machine to put the cable system under the sea right? The special machine must strong enough to withstand the sea's pressure level to allow the cable system work to be done. Eh expert can explain?

In highsight TM should have make another segment of the aag link with equal bandwidth capacity that detour via south philippines. Im not suprise if the cable consortium one day decides to stop putting up with all the frequent breaks and outages that happen near hk segment then build the link segment to serve as main route to carry direct SEA-US traffic bypassing natural disasters prone area near hongkong region entirely

Its not as simple as picking another route. When a large submarine cable breaks, what happens is packets are routed through alternate (read longer) routes to reach their destination. The sudden surge in traffic on these other routes also causes a congestion and brings entire networks to a crawl. Even though only the route to the US is currently broken, connectivity to sites/locations that are not within Malaysia will be equally slow due to the congestion brought upon by the additional load using the alternate routes.

Think of it as a road, if all the lanes on the highway is blocked, drivers automatically decide to take the trunk roads etc. But the trunk roads do not have the capacity to handle the traffic that the highway handles, and eventually it gets congested and crawls as well - and this very fast overflows to other roads and congesting them as well.

I have a TIME connection as well, and based on the trace, TIME routes via NTT to Singapore and directly to US-San Jose and should not be affected by the AAG outage.

9 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms xe-0-6-0-7.r00.sngpsi02.sg.bb.gin.ntt.net [116.51.17.185]
10 19 ms 9 ms 10 ms ae-1.r20.sngpsi05.sg.bb.gin.ntt.net [129.250.3.1.46]
11 182 ms 182 ms 182 ms ae-3.r20.snjsca04.us.bb.gin.ntt.net [129.250.3.4.8]
12 181 ms 181 ms 181 ms ae-1.r02.snjsca04.us.bb.gin.ntt.net [129.250.7.9]

You can see the NTT routing map here and how the Singapore link would remain largely unaffected by the spillover from the AAG disruption.

how kam the tech for this like behind time wan?
still using underwater cable. no other ways of connecting internet, maybe via satellite?

Satellite Internet have a Ping bottleneck..... Earth-Sat-Earth minimum 240ms. My opinion is TM should blend in more money in Submarine Cables to other countries to backup one another.....

For dota 2 player, i don't think packet loss issue is caused by this AAG submarine cable breakdown. I'm unifi 5mbps user since 2011 november and no problem at all.But unfortunately, since 3 MONTHS AGO packet loss problem for my dota 2 occured especially night time (8pm onwards) everyday. I got another house that using MAXIS 1MBPS INTERNET has no problem at all to play dota 2, no packet loss, i can play whenever i want.

THAT"s WHY I'M CONFIRM IT IS TM PROBLEM THAT CAUSE PACKET LOSS, ALL OF MY FRIENDS THAT USING STREAMYX AND UNIFI are having the same problem as me. SO few days ago i called their CS to complain, every time i call i NEED TO KEEP REPEATING MY ******* STORY TO THEM, and their solution was only restart my port, and I'm using my home phone to call them, so I HAVEN"T FINISH MY TAKE THEN THE PHONE DISCONNECTED ALREADY, SO I CONTACT THEM VIA EMAIL. Sent pingplotter to them. Damn really coincidentally this AAG submarine cable breakdown, they just presume and explain to me about my problem is caused by this cable. so after this AAG line is fixed but the packet loss problem still persist, IM GONNA COMPLAIN THEM LIKE .....

what i want to reiterate that MAXIS HAS NO PACKET LOSS, ONLY UNIFI, AND THIS PROBLEM STARTS FROM 3 months AGO, AAG LINE WAS JUST BROKEN ON MONDAY...I believe it caused by more and more unifi subscriber and caused their server congested during peak hour and packet loss happens.....so please doto 2 unifi user help me to complain 1300-88-1221 or UNIFI@TM.COM.MY

more people complain only can escalate this problem and make awareness to them. TY

IF I GOT ANY WRONG IN THIS THREAD U CAN CORRECT ME, MAYBE MAXIS IS NOT USING THIS AAG LINE ONLY UNIFI USING???

I believe TM won't do this in order to protect their net income. Leasing a cable from other providers will cost them a huge amount of money.

There were probably commercial reasons for laying it that way - 1) PLDT is part of the consortium, so the cable can't bypass Philippines, 2) Hong Kong is a major Internet hub, so it opens more options for the cable if it lands there.

Repairs are expected to take longer than usual as Hong Kong is being hit by typhoon Kalmaegi.

the recent typhoon may explain but worries more about the potential earthquake in this region may have foster foreplay.

A lot of people are blaming doto lag on last month's DDoS attacks, but connecting to servers in Singapore for LoL, DoTA and CSGO are a pain.
The ping is fine but the packet loss for CSGO hits 30% :/

gud idea

but problem is, if do that, then we will be skipping Pinoy, Vietnam, & Hong kong

skipping pinoy+vietnam+hong kong = skipping maintenance-cost-sharing between malaysia+pinoy+vietnam+hong kong

skipping maintenance cost-sharing = malaysia pay the whole maintenance cost alone = TM budget skyrocketed = marked up charge us ridiculous monthly bill

we want that to happen?

TM doing their traffic bandwidth allocation. Since their secondary reserved bandwidth is expensive, you will expect most of the non-essential stuff to be massively trottled

i wonder what happen to the 2nd class TM streamyx users, 56k speed?

As long the brand is ASUS and Intel. You pay premium price and get good stable drivers.

TP Link, D Link, Aztech etc are all rubbish products, not recommended if you stream video, play online or 24/7 heavy download, these brand's product disconnect very very frequently.

Many thanks. ASUS it is.

Fking peesashit TP link. The youtube thing has happened very frequently lol. Not only during this period with the damaged undersea cables.

I often have to restart the router to get it streaming HD again smoothly. But then could it also be the router? using the stock Dlink dir-615. anyways will get a new wireless adapter first and see how it goes from there.

Wait till your whole family at home browse web and watch video. Your TP Link sure crash until it's pants drop down.

My ASUS can handle 10-20 wifi connections. Worse case scenario is Unifi crash. brows.gif

Cisco and Asus r recommended if u r a hig end user, the both brands can support high traffic. Dlink is ok, juz that which model u use. D dlink given by Unifi can only support casual Surfers only. It will freeze itself when too high traffic passinh through...

Yeah well there are at least 3 high traffic users in the house i live in. Always streaming shows/ gaming online etc.

I suppose i'll get a new router too soon, hope setting up etc won't be a pain. Shouldn't expect to face compatibility issues with the BTU or whatever la right?

If u want guarantee no prob. Go to Asus. Bcuz TM had a VLAN setting which not every rounder can support. Cisco u nid to call their CS and ask.

always use channel 1 / 6 / 11

change to 20mhz and stick to wireless g

sometimes disconnection happens when wireless n drop to g and vice versa

but the downside is can only max 54mbps over wifi

but since the internet speed in malaysia is whistling.gif

unless u need to stream contents from your PC to TV and vice versa
